Water Plant List for Cochise County, Arizona
Water Wise No - Water Plant List for Cochise County, Arizona The following plants can be used in a landscape with no supplemental water once established. Establishment takes about 1 year for groundcovers, wildflowers and grass, 2 years for shrubs and 3 years for trees. Catch rainwater to water plants. Contour your yard with dips (swales) and shallow catchment basins to catch rainwater and create berms to direct water to planted areas. Dig deep wide holes and fill them with coarse gravel to store water in the ground around plants. Install catchment containers for roof run-off. 1,000 sqft of collection area can yield 600 gallons in a 1 inch rain. Think big. Baldwin, [email protected] ORCID BGB, http://orcid.org/0000-0002-0028-2242; KRW, http://orcid.org/0000-0001-6446-1154 DOI http://dx.doi.org/10.12705/655.8 Abstract Molecular phylogenetic analyses of nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequences indicate that the rediscovered Apostates, known only from Rapa in the Austral Islands of southeastern Polynesia, represents an example of extreme long-distance dispersal (> 6500 km) from southwestern North America and one of at least four disjunctions of comparable magnitude in the primarily New World Bahia alliance (tribe Bahieae). Each of the disjunctions appears to have resulted from north-to-south dispersal since the mid-Miocene; three are associated with such marked morphological and ecological change that some of the southern taxa (including Apostates) have been treated in distinct genera of uncertain relationship. Phyllotaxy within the Bahia alliance, however, evidently has been even more conservative evolutionarily than reflected by previous taxonomies, with alternate-leaved and opposite-leaved clades in Bahia sensu Ellison each encompassing representatives of other genera that share the same leaf arrangements. A revised taxonomic treatment of the Bahia alliance is proposed to recognize morphologically distinctive, monophyletic genera, including the critically endangered Apostates. -

Native Plants for Habitat at Home You can make a difference! Native plants provide the resources and habitat structure birds are looking for. They provide food, shelter and nesting opportunities. Thorny Desert Trees Whitethorn acacia, Acacia constricta Shrubby tree generally 10’–15’ tall; found between 1500’-5000’ elevation. Deciduous; Bloom May– Aug/Sept. Very cold hardy, tough when established, can handle full sun and poor soils. Harbors insects and produces seeds that draw verdins, doves, sparrows, finches, pyrrhuloxias and other birds. Verdins may nest in them. Hosts desert mistletoe, so can be important to phainopeplas. Larval plant for some butterflies. Good shelter for birds. Catclaw acacia, Acacia greggii Shrubby tree rarely to 20’ tall on floodplains. Likes sun, can be lanky in mesquite forests. Locally native in Tucson and Green Valley areas; found up to 5000’ elevation. Long-lived; semi-deciduous in winter and extreme drought. Catchy catclaw thorns—good for out-of-the-way places. Blooms Apr–Oct.with many small flowers clustered on catkins. Seeds attract doves, verdins, sparrows, pyrrhuloxias, quail. Long lived; Bloom May–June; Seed June-July; Avoid in low-lying areas where cold air settles, but seems to do well in most Tucson neighborhoods; Seeds eaten raw, parched, steamed, ground; wood used for tools, tool handles; Seeds: mammals, game birds; Nesting: cactus wren. Flowers: hummingbirds, bumble bees, carpenter bees, honeybees. Host for desert mistletoe. Browse for bighorn sheep, mule deer; Figure 2: Ironwood Insects on plant eaten by birds. -

The List was compiled by the Department of Water Resources in cooperation with the Landscape Technical committee of the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association, comprised of experts from the Desert Botanical Garden, the Arizona Department of Transportation and various municipal, nursery and landscape specialists. Individuals wishing to add or delete plants from the list may submit information to the Director of the Arizona Department of Water Resources (Director) for consideration. The Director will amend the list as appropriate. The List does not imply that every plant listed is suited to every right-of-way or low water use landscape situation. It is the responsibility of the landscape designer, architect or contractor to determine which plants are suitable for a specific location and situation. The bibliography provides substantial educational information to determine specific plant characteristics and needs. PLANTS ARE PLACED IN THE CATEGORIES WHERE THEY ARE MOST OFTEN USED. THIS DOES NOT PRECLUDE THE USE OF ANY PLANT IN ANOTHER GROWTH FORM.
