The event witnessed the participation of 150 delegates and leading Neuroscience and Ophthalmology professionals. This included a team from the University of Melbourne's Department of Optometry & Vision Sciences, consisting of Professor Trichur R.Vidyasagar, head of the Visual and Cognitive Neuroscience Unit, Associate Professor Allison Mckendrick, who heads the Clinical Psychophysics Unit, Associate Professor Andrew Metha, whose lab images living retinas, Dr Andrew Anderson, whose Optological Unit studies perimetry, eye movements and neural decision making and Dr Bang Participants at the Vision and Visual Neuroscience Workshop Bui, head of the Ocular Physiology Unit that studies risk factors in glaucoma and diabetes. Visual Neuroscience at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore was represented by Professor Govindarajan Rangarajan, Department of Mathematics and coordinator, DST Centre for Mathematical Biology and Dr S.P.Arun, Assistant Professor & Wellcome - DBT Intermediate Fellow, Center for Neuroscience. Prof Vidyasagar began the first day's proceedings with high words of praise for Dr Badrinath and Sankara Nethralaya. Dr S.S.Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya extended a warm welcome to the distinguished delegates. He emphasized the importance of collaborative learning with giants like the University of Melbourne and the Indian Institute of Science and hoped that the workshop would be a harbinger of long-term collaborative learning by the three premier institutions. The first day of the event witnessed in-depth lectures on a wide array of topics in vision and visual neuroscience and the second day began with a tour of the clinical science and basic science research departments of Sankara Nethralaya. On Day 3, the workshop provided the students and faculty members of the ESO an opportunity to listen to lectures pertaining to various topics in ophthalmology and neuroscience by the Melbourne colleagues and also for pursuing higher studies at the University of Melbourne.

Sankara Nethralaya defines the Art and Science of Ophthalmic Imaging It was day of fulfillment for 8 years of dedicated labour for an institution in the forefront of leveraging technology to detect, diagnose and interpret diagnostic intricacies. The occasion was the book launch of the 'Atlas of Imaging in Ophthalmology' co-authored by Dr S.Ambika,Director, Neuro-Ophthalmology Department, Dr.Veena Noronha, Consultant Radiologist and Dr. Padmaja Minakshisundaram, Neuro-Ophthalmologist at the Sri VD.Swami Auditorium. Extending a warm welcome to the Chief Guest of the day Dr G.Arjundas, Professor Emeritus, and the other eminent Neuro- surgeons Dr Suresh Bapu, Dr. Balamurugan, Apollo Specialty Hospital, , Dr Siddharth Ghosh, Oncologist from Kharaghpur, Dr Smitha Vittal the day's presenter explained that the book is a work on Ophthalmology, Participants at the launch of Atlas of Imaging in Ophthalmology Oncology and Radiology. Describing the book as a rich repertoire of cases compiled from year 2002, she added that the highlight of the book was its foreword by Professor Neil Miller, Chief, Neuro-ophthalmology Division at the Wilmer Eye Institute at the famous 'The John Hopkins School of Medicine', Baltimore, USA. Speaking on the occasion Dr. Veena Noronha thanked the Senior Management team for the support extened towards bringing the book. Dr. Ambika observed that Orbit and Neuro- imaging have brought revolutionary changes in ophthalmic imaging. Arjundas lauded the sincere efforts of the team which had most painstakingly recorded huge data. Delivering the welcome address Ms Jameel Rizwana Hussain,ESO underlined that visual morbidity was seen increasing in children. Dr Sumitha Agarkar, Deputy Director, Pediatric Ophthalmology observed that according to the WHO there were 12 million children partially or fully vision impaired. Speaking on the occasion Dr R.Srikanth, Senior Consultant, Pediatric Ophthalmology recalled the contribution of Dr TS.Surendran, Vice Chairman, who single handedly operated the pediatric ophthalmology department for two decades. Felicitating the Guest of Honour Dr J. Radhakrishnan, State Health Dr. Monte Del Monte, Director of Pediatric ophthalmology, Secretary, Dr T.S.Surendran described the popular Civil Servant as Mott Children's Hospital at XI Dr.Nagamani Dharmapuri a man who rises to great heights of service during calamities and a Endowment Lecture Collector who has been consistently recognized as 'Best Collector' for 4 times. Dr Kavitha Kalaivani introduced the Chief Guest and Speaker Monte Del Monte, Director of Pediatric ophthalmology & Adult strabismus, Skillman Professor of Pediatric ophthalmology and Pediatric and communicable diseases at the University of Michigan and Director of Pediatric ophthalmology at the Mott Children's Hospital, as an expert in complex strabismus surgery, researcher in biology and recipient of the Best Doctor of America' award. Chief Guest of the day Dr Monte Del Monte gave a most enlightening talk on 'Ambylopia Diagnosis' highlighting the various kinds of ambylopia. The highly interesting session ended with a Q&A and a warm vote of thanks by Dr.S.Meenakshi, Director, Academics.

Participants at the 13th Dr E.Vaithilingam Memorial Scientific session The Dr E. Vaithilingam Memorial Scientific Session conducted by the Elite School of Optometry had two days of events with the Contact lens pre-conference symposium on the 15th March and the 13th Dr. E. V. Memorial Scientific session on the 16th March. The opening day of the symposium started with an enlightening session on “International year of light” by Prof. Vasudevan Lakshminarayanan, a close associate of ESO and SN. He emphasized the United Nation's proclaim on 2015 to be observed as “International Year of Light and Light based Technologies”. The in-depth presentations on these topics made by experienced professionals from the respective fields was ably consolidated by Dr. Rajeswari after which Ms. Vijayalakshmi, Manager Optometry, presented an interesting curtain raiser to the forthcoming sessions on 'Clinician to Researcher', the theme of the 13th Dr. E.V Memorial scientific session. This was followed by highly interesting and informative case discussions on Low Vision Clinic, Vision therapy, Binocular Vision, Contact lens and Imaging. While 24 case reports were presented, the award for the best 5 case reports went to Mr. Nihar Davey, Ms. Archayeetha, Ms. Srividya, Ms. Greeshma and Ms. Rinu Thomas all from ESO. On the 16th March Dr. S.Meenakshi, Director, Academics, extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries and participants after which Dr.Rajeswari, head of the Contact Lens department shared her soulful experiences on mentoring and moulding by Dr. E. Vaithilingam. This year's session witnessed the presentation of 64 scientific abstracts; the best presentation in the student category was bagged by Ms Banumathi of ESO while the best paper in the regular award went to Ms. Shwetha of Manipal University. The session also witnessed the presentation of 9 ESO-Essilor travel awards bagged by Undergraduate optometry students from Mumbai, Hyderabad and Shillong. This year also had the commemoration of “Shri. P. V. Parameswara Iyer - Smt Kamala Bai” endowment awards presented by our beloved chief Dr. S.S. Badrinath to Ms. Anuradha, Ms. Rashima and Ms. Jameel Rizwana for their doctoral research and advanced training. 4 Spirituality and Patriotism mark Nation's 66th Republic Day celebrations at Sankara Nethralaya In keeping with the centuries old tradition of the country where patriotism and spiritualism blend and complement each other Sankara Nethralaya celebrated the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda the 20th century spiritualist and patriot along with the 66th Republic Day of the Nation. Swamini Pramananda reveriantially known as Ammaji, the Chief Guest of the Day unfurled the tricolor, followed by the rendering of the National anthem. Shri T.Arokiaswamy, Social Worker from the Department of Genetics and Molecular Biology got the day's proceedings to a great start with an interesting anecdote from the Mahabaratha where the ace archer Arjuna sees only his target Swamini Pramananda and Senior management team drawing a parallel of how Dr SS.Badrinath pursued his target with at Republic Day celebrations single minded focus. Dr Lily Therese, Head of the Department, Microbiology gave an interesting account of the Chief Guest Swamini Pramananda, who went on to do her Masters in Microbiology at the New York University and how her childhood sentiments made her give up everything to take a life of an ascetic, revive the Vedic heritage, serve and impart value based education through the Purna Vidhya. This was followed by a most inspiring talk by the Chief Guest on the sacrifices made by the founding fathers of the nation for the cause of this sacred land and soil, she emphasized that they got a great sense of fulfillment in being 'Givers'. Ammaji pointed out that Sankara Nethralaya was as a true 'Giver.' The occasion witnessed Dr SS.Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus dedicating the plaque encapsulating the qualities of Strength, Vision, Patience, Initiative and Courage presented to him by the Ramakrishna Mission to the employees of the institution by presenting it symbolically to Srimathi Usha, Executive at the Stores Department, being recognised for completing 30 years of service.

Sankara Nethralaya family gets a peep into Vedanta and Spiritualism Sankara Nethralaya observed the 150th Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda the patriotic saint with an undying love to his motherland aptly on the 26th of January 2014 being observed as Republic Day, with a powerful talk on 'Science and Spirituality' by Swamini Pramananda the eminent spiritual guru, social worker and expert on Vedanta. The guest speaker Swamini Pramananda gave a most powerful speech on the topic 'Science and Spirituality', highlighting on the difference between spiritual and material civilizations, she explained that science and spirituality are two distinct fields which neither compliment not contradict each other. The learned monk touched on the Advaita Vedanta philosophy where there is no past, present or future and no two separate entities of God and Man but one absolute consciousness. The impact of the spiritual talk on the audience could be gauged by the wide array of questions it elicited from them, questions from disturbed and disillusioned minds seeking the truth and philosophy of life and existence. Swamini Pramananda A distinguished observer and commentator of politics and economics shares his views at Sankara Nethralaya A talk by eminent economist and renowned journalist Shri Swaminathan S.Anklesaria Aiyar was organized as part of the ongoing knowledge acquisition initiative for SN members leading to a broader understanding of various subjects. The credit for organizing the visit of the Consultant to the World Bank, Research Fellow at the Cato Institute, whose immensely popular 'Swaminomics' captured the socio-political scenario of the country goes to Shri Suresh Dalapathy, Secretary, the Ophthalmic Mission Trust, Inc, USA the fund raising arm of the Sankara Nethralaya in the USA. The distinguished speaker started his talk on a retrospective note that 'health spending' received the least allocation in the country's 5 year plans and successive budgets. Shri Aiyar emphasized that even a small spending on preventive healthcare could keep most ailments at bay. He drew a parallel between households and the government when it came to reluctance to spending on Shri Swaminathan preventive health care and punned that most of us spend 'less on living and more on leaving'. Shri Sivanandhan had co-authored the book 'Chanakya's 7 secrets of Leadership' along with Shri Radhakrishnan Pillai which was recently launched by Dr SS.Badrinath. Dr. Neha Shrirao, Oculoplasty Fellow got the day's proceedings started with an introduction to the distinguished Chief guest highlighting his stellar role in suppressing naxalism. Speaking on the occasion Dr KS.Vasan, Managing Director, observed that he had read the book “7 secrets of leadership” inspired by the writings of the 4th Century BC thinker Chanakya and described Shri Sivanandan as a class of leaders who were far and few. He interspersed his talk with interesting anecdotes and experiences from his own life, from books right from the Thirukural to Paul Coelho's 'Alchemist', to drive his point home.He closed his highly invigorating and motivating talk with an appeal to the audience to have a vision and the passion to fulfill the vision.

A highly touched and moved Badrinaths see an extension of their 'dream turning into reality' at 'Drashti Nethralaya' Dr SS.Badrinath and Dr Vasanthi Badrinath made a trip to Gujarat to visit a place very close to their heart, governed by the same lofty principles of service and sacrifice. The Drashti Nethralaya is a fruit of the passion, dedication and sacrifice of a highly motivated and idealistic doctor couple Dr Mehul Shah and Dr Shreya Shah serving the poorest of the poor patients living in the second biggest tribal region of the country. Dr Mehul Shah had done his Fellowship in vitreo retina at Sankara Nethralaya, he was highly inspired by his Alma Mater and wanted to set up a similar facility functioning on the same principles at his native Dahod in Gujarat which is not served by the Dr Mehul Shah and Dr Shreya Shah, Drashti Nethralya most basic Medicare. The Sankara Nethralaya Academy launches 'Nethra Vidhya' a highly interactive and educative continuing education program As an institution in the forefront of real time teaching the Sankara Nethralaya Academy had launched the 'Nethra Vidhya'- A Continuing Optometric Education Progam- 2014. The first session of this series of six educative, i n f o r m a t i v e a n d i n t e r a c t i v e s e s s i o n s f o r students/practising optometrists titled 'Progressing with the Progressives' a clinically relevant topic for all practising optometrists and students got off to a flourishing start at the Sri VD Swami auditorium, Sankara Participants at Nethra Vidhya Nethralaya Main campus on 30th of March, 2014. The program started with an introduction to the COE series by Ms. Anuja R Singh Head of Optometry Courses, the Sankara Nethralaya Academy. Thirty three participants consisting of students and practising optometrists from different levels attended the session which covered topics like fitting and designs in Progressive lenses, live practical sessions, videos on lens manufacturing and case presentations. The participants were presented with a kit sponsored by Essilor which included basic equipments needed to fit Progressive addition lenses.
