Of all the wonders that I yet have heard, It seems to me most strange that men should fear; Seeing that death, a necessary end, Will come when it will come. (Shakespeare, Julius Caesar II, ii, 32-37) That death is complete extinction is the message forcefully driven home by the Epicurean analysis of the soul as a temporary amalgam of atomic particles . The moral corollary, that you should not let the fear of death ruin your life, is a cardinal tenet of Epicurean ethics. (Long and Sedley 1987:153) The second remedy of the tetrapharmakos concerns the second of the two great fears to which man is subject: death. Frischer (1982:208) observes that the Epicureans regarded death as “more damaging to peace of mind than all other fears except fear of the gods”. The Epicurean position is stated clearly in the surviving writings of the Master, and it is necessary to go directly to the ipsissima verba as our starting point, and then to augment our understanding of Epicurus’ words with further passages from later Epicureans and other philosophers. In these writings we shall see that death, as the material dissolution of body and soul, is a process at once natural, inevitable, and final. 1. Freed From Desire1 Countering Consumerism with Critical Epicureanism Master Thesis Philosophy by Robin Habbé, written under guidance of Johan Hartle ABSTRACT: Consumer society has the consumer in a tight hold; due to the cyclical nature of desire the consumer is manipulated to keep on consuming with disastrous ecological and social problems as a result. In my thesis I will elucidate the rise and the workings of contemporary consumer societies, more specifically the element of hedonism, because the organization of consumer society can be categorized as hedonistic. I will discuss hedonism and happiness as understood by Marcuse, as well as tactics for liberation from the imposed desires to consume. I will discover what room we have for emancipating the consumer by providing an alternative form of hedonism, based in Epicureanism. This thesis will show that Marcuse and Epicurus have very similar ideas as to how we should live happily, but most importantly on how to distinguish between true and false desires in order to live a more free and happy life, and to not destroy the planet while living. The lyrics seem to be very much aligned with the teachings of Epicurus: condemning money, power and fame and the desire for them as something we should liberate ourselves from through strong beliefs. EPISTOLARY EPICUREANS Pamela Gordon Send me a little pot of cheese, so that— when I wish—I may have a feast.1 Sayings, rejoinders, and retorts are the salient media for the construction of the biographies and teachings of most of the philosophers who appear in Diogenes Laertius’ Lives and Opinions of the Eminent Philosophers (third cen- tury ad). The great Greek philosophers tend to speak in one-liners that Dio- genes presents alongside or within anecdotes about their lives. Occasionally Diogenes embeds a letter to, from, or about a philosopher, but these letters appear only sporadically. When letters do appear, each is presented either in full or as an extended quotation.2 The exception emerges in Diogenes’ last and tenth book, whose subject is Epicurus and the Epicureans. In the biog- raphy of Epicurus, the prominent vehicles are the fragmentary letter and the allusion to letters. Why letters, when creative biographers could have continued the pattern set by the use of anecdote, aphorism or clever repar- tee in the accounts of Solon, Socrates, Diogenes the Cynic, and the other philosophers?3 And why fragments of letters, when the letters of the other 1 From a letter of Epicurus as recorded by Diogenes Laertius (10. 11): πέµψον µοι τυροῦ […] κυθριδίου, ἵν’ ὅταν βούλωµαι πολυτελεύσασθαι δύνωµαι. Dr. David Breeden August 6, 2017 at First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis Epicurus and Atomic Gratitude The philosopher Epicurus—who died 270 BCE—is the victim of an ancient hatchet job. “Epicurean” has come to mean gluttony. But his teachings were far from hedonistic or nihilistic. In other words, Epicurus was not an Epicurean. Rather than teaching all-out consumption, Epicurus taught: The wealth of nature is limited and easy to attain, but the wealth of vanity keeps growing larger and moving farther away. (Precepts 15) This is from a gathering of his sayings, called Precepts. Here’s another: Of our desires, some are natural and necessary; others are natural but not necessary; others, again, are neither natural nor necessary but are due to baseless opinion. (29) So, the desire for food is natural; the desire for a particular food is natural but not necessary; and the desire for an expensive, trendy food is neither natural nor necessary. That’s a manufactured need—“due to baseless opinion.” Central to true Epicureanism was simplicity in living and in diet. Added to this simplicity is friendship. Epicurus said, Of all the ways that wisdom finds to acquire happiness in life, by far the most important is making friends. (27) Epicurus sounds like a nice guy, so why did other schools of philosophy and religion hate his thought so much? The answer lies in a summary of Epicurean philosophy known as the Tetrapharmakos, or “four part remedy.” (Pharmakos is where we get the English term pharmacy.) GLAD Philodemus: life and Works By the middle of the first century BCE a flourishing Epicurean com munity existed at Naples under the leadership of the Greek teacher Siro. At nearby Herculaneum the Syrian Epicurean, Philodemus of Gadara, the house-philosopher of the influential patron Calpurnius Piso, father-in-law of Julius Caesar, was attracting a wide circle of students. Epicureanism also had its contemporary exponents in Latin-Catius Insuber, Rabirius, C. Amafinius, whose prose tracts enjoyed popularity in Rome and in various Italian towns, and the poet Lucretius. The relationship among the Epicurean groups in Italy is not clear but apparently Siro's group in Naples and that of Philodemus at Herculaneum had an open exchange of views. I Both Philodemus and Siro were former pupils of Zeno of Sidon, the scholarch of the Epicurean school in Athens, and one would expect a certain co-ordination in their efforts in promoting Epicurean views in southern Italy. Both groups cultivated interest in literary and philosophical study, thus escaping the charge traditionally levelled at Epicureans that they maintained a deliberate disregard for ge~eral learning; Cicero, for example, refers to both Siro and Philodemus as the "excellent and learned friends" of Torquatus.2 Philodemus' scholarly interest is evident from the number of pa pyrus rolls recovered from Piso's suburban villa at Herculaneum.
