    An Gleann's robh mi og When I was a child my great grandmother Christina MacLachlan lived alone in a tiny cottage in Tobermory which consisted of just two rooms, a bedroom and a living room which also served as the kitchen. There was a stone sink with single cold water tap that was used for all purposes and a tiny ‘Baby Belling’ electric stove for cooking and heating water. It was all in stark contrast to my parents’ home on the edge of London. What I didn’t realize was that with electricity and mains water this represented luxury compared with the life she had known at Glendrian where she had raised her six children who would be the last of the many MacLachlan generations to have lived at the tiny township. Chrissie, the youngest of her children wrote a description of Glendryen in a school exercise book / diary when she was in Senior 1, Class IV, at the Achosnich Public School, Ardnamurchan in 1924. It contains perfect handwriting, arithmetic, and drawings, etc. In a piece entitled ‘ An Gleann's robh mi og .’ which means something like ‘Historic Glendryen’ she stated: "The generation of MacLachlans now in Glendryen is the 10th or 11th generation of that clan to have lived there" and went on to give the numbers of Stock, i.e. cows, horses, calves, etc. at both Glendrian and Plocaig. It is difficult to put a precise time to the period of occupation by our family in that men folk often married later rather than earlier in life.

    The Highland Council Agenda 5 Item Lochaber Area Committee Report LA/2/14 No 27 February 2014 Population Change in Lochaber 2001 To 2011 Report by Director of Planning and Development Summary This report presents early results from the 2011 Census, giving local information on the number and ages of people living within Lochaber. It compares these figures with those from 2001 to show that the population has “aged”, and that there is a large number of people who are close to retirement age. The population of Lochaber has grown by 6.1% (compared to the Highland average of 11.1%) with an increase in both Wards, and at a local level in 18 out of 27 data zones. Local population growth is strongly linked to the building of new homes. 1. Background 1.1. Publication of the results from the 2011 Census began in December 2012, and the most recent published in November and December 2013 gave the first detailed results for “census output areas”, the smallest areas for which results are published. These detailed results have enabled preparation of the first 2011 Census profiles and these are available for Wards, Associated School Groups, Community Councils and Settlement Zones on the Highland Council’s website at: http://www.highland.gov.uk/yourcouncil/highlandfactsandfigures/census2011.htm 1.2. This report returns to some earlier results and looks at how the age profile of the Lochaber population and the total numbers have changed at a local level (datazones). Creag Meagaidh is a complex massif, with numerous mountain tops and an extensive high summit plateau edged by a dramatic series of ice-carved corries and gullies. The Reserve extends from the highest of the mountain tops to the shores of Loch Laggan. The plateau is carpeted in moss-heath and is an important breeding ground for dotterel. The corries support unusual artic- alpine plants and the lower slopes have scattered patches of ancient woodland dominated by birch. Located 45 kilometres (km) northeast of Fort William and covering nearly 4,000 hectares (ha), the Reserve is owned and managed by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH). Creag Meagaidh has been a NNR since 1986 and during the last twenty years SNH has worked to restore natural habitats, particularly woodland, on the Reserve. Like much of the Highlands, the vegetation has been heavily grazed for centuries, so it was decided to reduce the number of grazing animals by removing sheep and culling red deer. The aim was not to eliminate grazing animals altogether, but to keep numbers at a level that allowed the habitats, especially the woodland, to recover.

There are about 250 pages and the top of each is marked “Daily Journal of Duty performed by P.C. Mackay Stationed at Kinlochailort”. 1897 Monday April 19. “At 1pm left Fort William per instructions of Inspector Chisholm and proceeded by Mail Coach to Kinlochailort where I arrived at 7pm and patrolled about the Hotel to 10.30 pm. Travelled 30 miles on duty 9½ hours. April 20. Remained all night at the Hotel here having failed to secure private lodgings. At 10 am patrolled the New Railway works to Polnish and returned by Public Road to Hotel at 6 pm. Travelled 8 miles and 8 hours on duty. Night duty. Patrolled about the Hotel and the Public Road from 7 pm to 11 pm. Travelled 4 miles on duty. 4 hours. Wednesday 21 April. Patrolled along the line of the New Railway Works from the Hotel to Polnish from 10 am to 2 pm. and from 4 pm to 6 pm. Friday April 23. Patrolled about the Hotel and vicinity generally from 7 pm to 11 pm and returned to the house of Mr Simon Fraser, Gardener, residing at Inverailort Lodge having secured lodgings there being since my arrival here staying at the Hotel. Sunday April 25. At 10 am left the Station and patrolled by the Hotel and Navvy Huts to Polnish. 7 miles, 6 hours on duty April 28.

From the West, follow the A86 towards Newtonmore, through Laggan to Balgowan as above. There is space in the car park for 6 (carefully parked) cars. The access path to The Cabin is to the W end of the car park, follow the track up the hillside and round to the right behind the trees to reach the hut in about 100 yards. • Accommodation: 10 people: 8 on two alpine-style sleeping platforms and 2 on bunk beds in an adjoining small room, all with mattresses.
