ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, formerly known as Whipsnade Wild Animal Park, is a zoo and safari park located at Whipsnade, near Dunstable in Bedfordshire. It is one of two zoos that are owned by the Zoological Society of London, a charity devoted to the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. Neighboring Luton is the home to Stockwood Park Discovery Centre and Wardown Park and Museum both of these are well worth a visit and are accessible by public transport.

    Bedfordshire Local History Association BLHA Autumn Event - A Visit to The Walled Garden, Luton Hoo Estate Wednesday 11th September 2019, 10.00 to 3.00pm Morning talk, lunch available to purchase at the Wood Yard Café, with an afternoon guided tour of the Walled Garden or Victorian Farm Buildings Many of you may well have seen the BBC Countryfile episode in July that featured John Craven in the Walled Garden at Luton Hoo Estate. This visit by the BLHA will be an ideal opportunity to see first-hand the project that is going on. The day will begin with a talk about the general history of the estate including the garden project and the farm. The garden tour will begin with Lord Bute who in collaboration with ‘Capability’ Brown built the Walled Garden on its present site and take you through its various owners to Sir Harold and Lady Zia Wernher and how after Lady Zia’s death the Walled Garden was left uncared for. The present owner hoped to be able to restore it to its present state and approached an organisation in Harpenden with the thought that volunteers might be interested in both the garden and the history of the Estate. The Victorian farm buildings tour will start with the history from the 1860’s when a Liverpool solicitor took over the Estate and spent a great deal of money making it into one of the most industrialised farms in England. At that time it was a mainly beef and sheep farm, it is now a wholly arable farm.

Maps and other documents held there can assist in the study of garden layout and planning, whilst bills, receipts, letters, illustrations and other documents may hint at the planting of a garden over time. The amount of material we have for a particular garden will vary from nothing at all to a great deal. This may be an accident of survival or of deposit, either records no longer exist for the property or rather than having been deposited with Bedfordshire archive service they are still held by the owners of the garden, relatives/descendants of the creators of the garden or in archive collections elsewhere in the world. For example the records for the Jekyll garden at The Old House, Ickwell are held be at University of California, Berkerley. http://www.ced.berkeley.edu/cedarchives/profiles/jekyll/ickwell.htm Where houses and gardens were occupied by tenants it is the tenants who would have kept records rather than the owners of the property and these records are less likely to survive. Before coming to the Archives Service • Walk the area if possible. Note bumps/depressions in lawns etc that might indicate previous features, such as flowerbeds and garden buildings that have been destroyed. Note also any mature planting and their species. The same planting patterns in different parts of an estate for example, may give a clue as to the dates the trees were put in.

    TRANSACTIONS. O 45 31 BY THE REV. H. FOWLER, M.A. A few remarks on the ancient associations of this parish may perhaps be suitable as an introduction to our subject. It appears that the earliest notice of Luton is that in the Anglo-Saxon chronicle under the date 571. In that year, it states, Cuthwolf, who was brother of Ceawlin, King of the West Saxons, fought against the Britons at Bedcanford (i.e. Bedford), and took from them four towns ; one of these was AEgelsburig, or Aylesbury, and another Ligeanburg. Ligeanburg has been con- sidered to be the same locality as Lygetune, mentioned in a charter of King Offa ; and this is, undoubtedly, Luton. Ligeanburg or Lygetune means the town on the Lygea, the river now called the Lea. There is a hamlet, formerly called Lygebury, now Limbury ; this perpetuates the name of the British town ; it is on the Lea, about two miles north-west of the modern Luton. The British town itself I take to be a large circular earthwork existing in Leagrave Marsh, about three- quarters of a mile east from Limbury (I am quoting the description in Davis' History of Luton). Its area is about thirty acres, and it is close to the Icknield-way. We may, I think, call this the British Luton. (Davis, however, supposes it to be a Roman camp.) The 32 S. All along this line up to Leagrave Marsh, Saxon weapons and orna- ments, bosses of shields, and bones have been found.* The earliest Saxon settlement seems to have been on the east side of the Lea about a mile from the modern town, on the old road to Barton, as indicated by Saxon pottery and other vestiges of occupation dug up there.
