01 Phase 2 -Land Off Mill Road, Cranfield INTRODUCTION THE SITE Site Boundary - 6.59ha Recently Approved Phase 1 Development Bellway Homes Site (under construction) Introduction Gladman Developments Ltd have successfully invested in communities throughout the UK over the past 20 years, developing high quality and sustainable residential, commercial and industrial schemes. A process of public consultation is being undertaken by Gladman Developments Ltd in order to present the emerging development proposals for Phase 2 - Land Off Mill Road, Cranfield to the local community. We are proposing a residential development of approximately 78 homes, together with substantial new open space and potential additional land for the new Doctors Surgery, including access and/or pick-up and drop-off facilities. The purpose of the public consultation process is to outline the details of the draft scheme and seek comments from the local community which will be considered before the outline planning application is lodged with Central Bedfordshire Council. Site Description Why is the site suitable for development? The site is located on the western edge of a recently approved residential scheme. Signed: 3 4 Abstract Our understanding of early human behaviour has always been and continues to be predicated on an archaeological record unevenly distributed in space and time. More than 80% of British Lower-Middle Palaeolithic findspots were discovered during the late 19th/early 20th centuries, the majority from lowland fluvial contexts. Within the British planning process and some academic research, the resultant findspot distributions are taken at face value, with insufficient consideration of possible bias resulting from variables operating on their creation. This leads to areas of landscape outside the river valleys being considered to have only limited archaeological potential. This thesis was conceived as an attempt to analyse the findspot data of the Lower-Middle Palaeolithic record of the Chalk uplands of southeast Britain and northern France within a framework complex enough to allow bias in the formation of findspot distribution patterns and artefact preservation/discovery opportunities to be identified and scrutinised more closely. Taking a dynamic, landscape = record approach, this research explores the potential influence of geomorphology, 19th/early 20th century industrialisation and antiquarian collecting on the creation of the Lower- Middle Palaeolithic record through the opportunities created for artefact preservation and release. -

For the majority of the period Luton was a prosperous, optimistic town that encouraged forward-looking local planning and policy. The Straw Hat Boom Town, seeing problems ahead in its dependence on a single industry, worked hard to attract and develop new industries. In doing so it fuelled a growth that changed the town forever. However Luton became almost as dependant on the motor industry as it had been on the hat industry. The aim of this pack is to provide a core of resources that will help pupils studying local history at KS2 and 3 form a picture of Luton at this time. Berwick Advertiser 1891 Berwick Advertiser 1891 January 23, p. 2, column 5. BERWICK CHORAL UNION. MARITANA. Last night the members of Berwick Choral Union gave their 22nd annual concert in the Corn Exchange, which was filled by a numerous and appreciative audience. The work selected for performance this year was Vincent Wallace’s charming opera “Maritana,” which shares with “Lurline” a large measure of popular favour. The chief features of “Maritana” are its florid orchestration and its fine melodies. The dramatis personae of the opera are Maritana, a handsome gitana, soprano; Lazarillo, mezzo-soprano; Don Caesar de Bazan, tenor; Don Jose de Santarem, baritone; Captain of the Guard, baritone; the King, bass; the Alcade, bass; chorus and soldiers, gipsies and populace. The argument is as follows: Maritana, whilst singing to a crowd of people in a square in Madrid, attracts the admiration of the King of Spain. Don Jose, who is an unscrupulous courtier, observing this, determines to satisfy the King’s whim, and then to betray him to the Queen, with whom he is bold enough to be madly in love. Don Caesar de Bazan, who is an impetuous spendthrift, arrives upon the scene, and in order to protect Lazarillo, who is a poor boy, from arrest, challenges the Captain of the Guard, an action which by a recent edict of the King entails death by hanging. He is arrested and imprisoned, but by Don Jose’s influence his sentence is changed to the more soldier-like death of being shot, on condition that he marries a veiled lady; this he consents to do.
