Given the unpromising projections, voices of resistance, anger, frustration, uncertainty, and hope are becoming increasingly visible on the island’s cities’ walls and spaces. Thus, based on the current situation of fiscal crisis, this visual essay narrates and documents the continuum of interpretations and opinions regarding the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA) inscribed in the urban fabric over the past five years from now. Dadas las proyecciones, las voces de resistencia, ira, frustración, incertidumbre y esperanza son cada vez más visibles en las paredes y espacios de las ciudades de la isla. Por tanto, dada la situación actual de crisis fiscal, este ensayo visual narra y documenta el continuo de interpretaciones y opiniones sobre la Ley de Supervisión, Gestión y Estabilidad Económica de Puerto Rico (PROMESA) inscritas en el tejido urbano durante los últimos cinco años. -

About the Centro Film Collection The Centro Library and Archives houses one of the most extensive collections of films documenting the Puerto Rican experience. The collection includes documentaries, public service news programs; Hollywood produced feature films, as well as cinema films produced by the film industry in Puerto Rico. Presently we house over 500 titles, both in DVD and VHS format. Films from the collection may be borrowed, and are available for teaching, study, as well as for entertainment purposes with due consideration for copyright and intellectual property laws. Film Lending Policy Our policy requires that films be picked-up at our facility, we do not mail out. Films maybe borrowed by college professors, as well as public school teachers for classroom presentations during the school year. We also lend to student clubs and community-based organizations. For individuals conducting personal research, or for students who need to view films for class assignments, we ask that they call and make an appointment for viewing the film(s) at our facilities. After a responding with a resolute ―NO,‖ I thought about it and remembered that the prior summer I had read an article in a newspaper about a group of people claiming to be Taíno protesting the management of the Caguana ceremonial site in Utuado, PR. Never am I more Caribbean, Antillean, Latin American, wherever we may be, than today. I live and die with wounds that will never finish closing. And I will always stand in the lines we make to care for us and, hopefully, to heal us.” (Llenín Figueroa 2019) “Note 11: The longer I’m over here, abroad, the more intrigued I am by the contrasts between my native land and the great metropolis. I don’t mean the obvious, like the monumental buildings, the immense population, and the ruckus on the street. Nor, of course, the cold that bites more and more each day. I mean the little things, like the promptness of the bus, the water pressure, and the absolute confidence one has in the fact that things work. What now? What do we do?” (Orraca-Brandenberger 2019) In early July 2019, a line of tolerability was irrevocably crossed when an 800+ page group chat that took place in the messaging application ‘Telegram’ was leaked, revealing damning exchanges between the sitting governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rosselló, and his group of closest confidants. The insulting messages (now variously known as #telegramgate, Chatgate or RickyLeaks) shook this Caribbean ‘postcolonial colony’ (Ayala and Bernabe 2007; Flores 1993; Negrón-Muntaner and Grosfoguel 1997), surfacing at a time when multiple crises were converging in real time: a long- standing public debt and an undemocratically appointed financial authority board (‘La Junta’) continued to rule the island’s finances to the detriment of the masses; decades of neoliberal austerity policies were causing mass out-migration and poverty; and the havoc caused by Hurricane Maria was still unraveling. -

Curriculum Units by Fellows of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute 1995 Volume IV: Coming of Age in Ethnic America El Sabor del Caribe / A Taste of the Caribbean (An analysis of the symbolism of food in the oral and written literature of the Caribbean) Curriculum Unit 95.04.01 by Elsa M. Calderon INTRODUCTION The intent of this unit is to infuse Caribbean culture into the Spanish curriculum, with a focus on Puerto Rico. The vehicle for this is literature, both oral literature and written literature. The oral literature includes popular children’s songs and “refranes.” The written literature includes poems, short stories, and books by modern Latina authors. These authors use food as a symbol for identity, patriotism, religious hypocrisy, and nostalgia. Caribbean in this unit refers to two Caribbean islands that are Hispanic: Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Mexico is included, although part of North America and not the Caribbean, because of the proximity of Mexico and the contributions of a Mexican-American writer, Sandra Cisneros. This does not preclude the possibility of other islands, such as Cuba. The area thus defined as Caribbean is rich with different cultures and traditions. There does exist, however, a common language: Spanish, and similar traditions and cultures. The islands share a common or similar history. The culture is a mixture of the Native Americans, the Spanish, and the Africans. This is referred to as “criollo” (creole). The Caribbean has developed a culture of itself and different from the rest of Latin America. This unit is part of a continuum of Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute Units. -

Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts An Abstract of the Thesis of Momo Wilms-Crowe for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department of Political Science to be taken June 2020 Title: “Desde Abajo, Como Semilla: Puerto Rican Food Sovereignty as Embodied Decolonial Resistance Approved: _______Dan Tichenor, Ph.D______________ Primary Thesis Advisor This thesis explores the power, possibility, and agency embedded in food in the contemporary Puerto Rican context. Building from participatory ethnographic fieldwork with activists, chefs, and farmers engaged in food sovereignty work, I examine the concepts of political agency and subjectivity as they relate to embodied experiences of politics and highlight the generative potential of work occurring in unconventional locations for political participation. This approach is made possible with the understanding that the food we consume directly connects our individual lived experiences to broader structures of power in intimate and material ways. Through food, I offer a grounded critique of US colonial violence, inherently linked to ecological destruction, cisheteropatriarchy, and disaster capitalism. I also document dynamics of radical prefigurative politics as visible in people’s generative reimagining of relationships with their bodies, each other, and the land. This analysis is supported theoretically by Indigenous, anarchist, and queer/feminist perspectives which similarly connect the personal to the political and offer examples of political action that extend beyond state-centric formal politics. -

Hintzen, Chair My dissertation examines entanglements of race, place, gender, and class in Puerto Rican reggaetón. Based on ethnographic and archival research in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and in New York, New York, I argue that Puerto Rican youth engage with an African diasporic space via their participation in the popular music reggaetón. By African diasporic space, I refer to the process by which local groups incorporate diasporic resources such as cultural practices or icons from other sites in the African diaspora into new expressions of blackness that respond to their localized experiences of racial exclusion. Participation in African diasporic space not only facilitates cultural exchange across different African diasporic sites, but it also exposes local communities in these sites to new understandings and expressions of blackness from other places. As one manifestation of these processes in Puerto Rico, reggaetón refutes the hegemonic construction of Puerto Rican national identity as a “racial democracy.” Similar to countries such as Brazil and Cuba, the discourse of racial democracy in Puerto Rico posits that Puerto Ricans are descendents of European, African, and indigenous ancestors.
