Dan Gurney 1931-2018
www.porscheroadandrace.com Dan Gurney 1931-2018 Published: 15th January 2018 By: Glen Smale Online version: https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/dan-gurney-1931-2018/ Solitude, 15 July1962: Dan Gurney behind the wheel of a Porsche 804 Formula 1 at the Solitude Dan Gurney, the well-known racing driver, passed away on 14 January 2018. Where does one start with a driver like Dan Gurney? He was an inspiration to many, admired by both rivals and friends alike, and an all-round good guy. His racing achievements are so numerous and his victories so varied, that it would take a book to do www.porscheroadandrace.com them justice. But under that tough, competitive front lay a likeable and easy-going nature that, when folk approached him, would break into that familiar broad California smile. Solitude 1962: Dan Gurney on the podium with Jo Bonnier (right) I had the pleasure of making his acquaintance on two separate occasions, one in a face-to- face meeting and the other was on the telephone when I interviewed him a couple of years back. On both occasions, he was so easy to get on with, that I was actually taken aback. www.porscheroadandrace.com www.porscheroadandrace.com Solitude, 15 July1962: Dan Gurney wins the Formula 1 Grand Prix driving a Porsche 804 Formula 1 Born on 13 April 1931 in Port Jefferson, New York, his family moved to California where Gurney would learn his profession in the school of hard knocks, as he made his name in the Hot Rod scene while still a teenager. -

Vitesse! Page 3 Foreword Motorsport essentially consists of three ingredients. First, you need a motor vehicle - which can be anything from a Formula 1 car to a lawn mower, or from a MotoGP motorcycle to a pocket bike. Second, you need a driver or rider to operate the vehicle, and finally, a place to go racing - a circuit. To most people this last ingredient is probably the least interesting. The number of books about famous racing drivers and cars, or great riders and their motorcycles, is far larger than the number of books about racing circuits. However, to me circuits are the most interesting aspect of motorsport, for two main reasons. First is their great diversity: in terms of shape, layout, length, difficulty, fame and many other factors, every circuit is different, and each has its own story to tell. Second, it is fascinating to see just how many circuits there are. Once you start looking, you can find them just about any- where. Finding lost circuits or discovering long-forgotten tracks is one of the most fun aspects of researching racing circuits. When looking for information about racing circuits online, I often found it frustrating that the available sources were not complete, and that they often lacked detail and accuracy. This is one of the reasons why I started my website www.wegcircuits.nl and why I made Rennen! Races! Vitesse! - a downloadable pdf-file that lists racing circuits of past and present in four European countries: the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Austria. -

The 356 B 2000 GS Carrera GT and 911 GT3 RS 4.0 Meet on the Former Racetrack on the Outskirts of Stuttgart
CHRISTOPHORUS | 356 CHRISTOPHORUS | 356 * This way to Solitude Circuit! * Motorsports past and present: The 356 B 2000 GS Carrera GT and 911 GT3 RS 4.0 meet on the former racetrack on the outskirts of Stuttgart. A thrilling encounter between two driving machines that interpret the roller-coaster ride in their own special ways. By Till Daun Photos by Victor Jon Goico he Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 growls as it rolls through the green hills just beyond Leon- berg that coalesce in a wooded district be- T fore running into Stuttgart’s southwestern edge. It is the place to be in the Mahden valley, even though the dreary weather makes it seem rath- er ordinary. And yet: between 1935 and 1965, it was part of Stuttgart’s Solitude racetrack, which enjoyed considerable fame throughout the world—an 11.4-kilometer (7-mile) circuit west of Stuttgart whose course and topography were determined by the lay of the land. 68 * This headline refl ects the original hand-painted lettering on a sign in the race director’s tower at the Solitude Circuit. 69 CHRISTOPHORUS | 356 CHRISTOPHORUS | 356 Today the track that once drew crowds in the hundreds of thousands is a part of the public transport system. It takes a sharp eye to spot remnants of the old spectator stands in the woods alongside the road: hints of seats half-buried in the embankments, artifacts now almost totally reclaimed by the forest. In the early days, Solitude was a motorcycle track, but in the 1950s it began to be used for cars as well, and they were the key to its fame. -
