SUMMARY Introduction. The map sheet Saint-Julien-en-Genevois covers both French and Swiss territory. Part of the eastern half of the map area is occupied by the Swiss Canton of Geneva, whereas on French territory, the Rhône river marks the boundary between the Departments of Ain and Haute-Savoie on its right and left bank, respectively. In the area covered by the map sheet, two major geological units are discerned, both of which are part of the Alpine foreland: In the east there is the Molasse plain of the Genevois area (mean altitude 450 m a.s.l.), which is the western continuation of the Swiss Molasse Basin, while in the west there are the Folded Jura mountains, whose maximum altitude (1717 m) is reached at Mt. Reculet. The Jura mountains are cross-cut in a SSE-NNW direction by the Vuache fault zone, which was at the origin of the -6- earthquake at Annecy on 15 July 1996. The ridge of Mt. Salève, situated in the southeastem corner of the map area, also belongs to the Jura mountains. Stratigraphie succession. The stratigraphie succession encompasses units from the Triassic to the Quaternary. The Mesozoic formations (Triassic-Turonian) (fig. 1) are reasonably well dated thanks to the studies by Meyer (1995) on the Lower Jurassic (Liassic), Mangold (1970) and Wernli (1971) on the Middle Jurassic (Dogger), Enay (1966) and Gaillard (1983) on the Oxfordian, Bernier (1984) on the Kimmeridgian-Tithonian and Charollais et al. (1989) on the Lower Cretaceous. On the whole, the Mesozoic sédiments consist of a fairly regular succession of compétent limestones and incompétent maris. This particular stratigraphie pattern strongly influenced the tectonic style of the southern Folded Jura. The stratigraphie succession begins with gypsum-bearing Keuper maris. Thèse are overlain by Rhaetian sandstones, which are in turn followed by ammonite-bearing Lower Jurassic maris (thickness 170 m). The Middle Jurassic (220 m) consists of echinoderm limestones and maris with small oysters of late Bajocian âge, fïne-grained limestones of Bathonian âge, and thin ferruginous limestones of Callovian âge. The Upper Jurassic has a total thickness of 500-700 m. Its lower portion is composed of ammonite- bearing maris of Oxfordian âge, whereas the upper part consists of limestones with a reefal faciès in the upper Kimmeridgian. The Purbeckian sédiments show évidence of émersion. The Lower Cretaceous (400-500 m) is comprised of a succession of maris and bioclastic limestones, which were deposited on a shallow platform, and the overlying Urgonian limestones (100 m, upper Hauterivian-Barremian), which hâve a tendency to form steep cliffs. The Upper Cretaceous (50 m) consists of the argillaceous, phosphatic and ammonite-bearing 'Grès verts jurassiens' (Bedoulian to Albian) and chalky limestones with chert and plankton of Turonian âge. At the base of the Tertiary succession (Bartonian?, Ludian? - Burdigalian) (fig. 1), there are Eocène continental sandstones that were deposited on a karstified surface. This very thin unit, the so-called Sidérolithique, discordantly overlies différent Mesozoic units and locally seals embryonic tectonic structures (Joukowsky & Favre, 1913; Paréjas, 1938b; Weidmann, 1984, Charollais et al, 1988). It is overlain by the Molasse succession, which extends up to the Upper Marine Molasse (OMM, Burdigalian) in this area. The Molasse deposits were studied by Joukowsky & Favre (1913), Heim (1922), Lagotala (1935, 1947), Paréjas (1938b), Rigassi (1957), Arikan (1964), Kissling (1974), Weidmann (1984), Fasel (1986), Angelillo (1987), Engesser & Mayo (1987), Charollais et al (1988) and Jenny et al (1995). -7- The Quaternary deposits, which occur mainly on the eastern half of the map area, consist of glaciolacustrine and fluvioglacial sédiments, as well as glacial till. They rest unconformably on the Upper Marine Molasse (fig. 2), with a temporal hiatus of approximately fifteen million years. The Quaternary succession documents the foliowing events: The 'Riss' and 'Wurm' glaciations, and eight retreat stadials of the 'Wiirm' glaciation represented by mainly deltaic glaciolacustrine sédiments (fig. 3). Structure (figs. 4, 5, 6). The structural évolution of the région can be studied in the outcrops of the Mesozoic formations, i.e. in the Jura mountains in the western part of the map area. The tectonic structure of the Saint-Julien-en-Genevois area is dominated by the Vuache fault, a NI70° oriented left-lateral strike-slip fault. Sporadic movements along this basement fault hâve had an influence on sédiment distribution from Permo-Carboniferous to Holocene times (Enay, 1966; Krummenacher, 1970; Charollais et al, 1983; Blondel, 1984, 1988; Sambeth, 1984; Sambeth and Pavoni, 1988; Amato, 1983, 1985, 1988; Guyonnet, 1987; Blondel et al, 1988; Gorin et al, 1993; Signer and Gorin, 1995). The Vuache fault belongs to a régional group of left-lateral strike-slip faults in the Geneva basin; this group also includes the Caille, Cruseilles, Coin and Arve faults (fig. 6). Movements along the Vuache fault caused the earthquake of 15 July 1995 that shook the northwest of Annecy. The Vuache fault zone divides the Folded-Jura part of map sheet Saint- Julien-en-Genevois into two areas of contrasting tectonic style (Blondel, 1984; Guyonnet, 1988;Nussbaumer, 1995): - In the Vuache - Haute-Chaîne - Chalam area in the east, a System of N 30° oriented ramp folds occurs (Reculet and Crêt-de-Chalam thrust faults). Thèse were overthrust towards the NW, which led to a horizontal shortening of the Mesozoic and Tertiary strata of 2 and 4 km, respectively. - The Retord - Giron area in the west is comprised of plateaus that are bounded by strike-slip faults. The plateaus consist of NI5° trending box folds with angular hinges.

UDC 564. 53 . 01 SYSTEMATICS OF THE MIDDLE JURASSIC HETEROMORPHIC AMMONITES N. V. Besnosov and V. V. Kutuzova All-Union Scientific Research Petroleum Geologic Exploration Institute (VSEGEI) ABSTRACT: The stratigraphic distribution, phylogenetic relationships, and systema tics of the Middle Jurassic heteromorphic ammonites and their relationship to the monomorphic ammonites are considered. Sulcohamitoides gen. nov. and Gaantiana as ajani sp. nov. are described. * * * The vast majority of Middle Jurassic heteromorphic ammonites are shells with a spiral developing early in one plane, all the way to the formation of a straight tube in the outer part of the phragmocone and in the living chamber. They are also characterized by reduction of the U and I lobes in ontogenesis, manifested to a greater or lesser degree, and by only slight dissection of their lobes and saddles. The following generic names of the Jurassic heteromorphs are given in the lite rature. Acuceas Potonie, 1929, for which the family Arcuceratidae Arkell, 1950 has been proposed. This genus is based on a single species, A. mathae Potonie, from the Pliensbachian of Germany, the only specimen of which has been lost. Repeated searches at the type locality have been unsuccessful. It has been suggested that the dating is erroneous, or that the species and genus are based not on a heteromor phic ammonite, but on acrinoid stem. Apsooceas Hyatt, 1900, occurs in the lower half of the subfucatum zone of the Upper-Bajocian and has usually been combined with Spioceas Quenstedt, 1858, from which it differs in its less reduced U and I lobes and its finer sculpture.

Jura Winter Meet 14 - 20 January Leader - Mick Borroff Introduction The Haut Jura straddles the Franco-Swiss border to the north of Geneva and is characterised by long parallel limestone ridges and valleys along a northeast-southwest axis. Moving SW along this ridge from the north, the principal summits include Le Chasseron (1607m), Mt d’Or (1462m), Dent de Vaulion (1483m), Mt Tendre (1679m), Mt Sala (1511m), Le Noirmont (1567m), La Dole (1677m), Columby de Gex (1689m), Cret de la Neige (1717m) and Le Reculet (1718m). The panoramic view from these Jura summits across to the main alpine chain is magnificent, ranging from the Bernese Oberland to the Ecrins. The excellent PeakFinder website will give you a good idea of what is to be seen from many individual summits. Participants Helen Smith Mick Borroff , President Michael Smith John Brown Gail Taylor (guest) Ros Brown (guest) Richard Taylor Ann Chadwick (guest) Hilary Tearle (guest) Peter Chadwick Sue Thomason (guest) Tim Josephy Rory Newman We had been checking the snow reports and webcams for the Jura for a couple of weeks before and like much of the Alps, there was little snow to be seen. The weekend before we left it had snowed but Paul Everett, our chief Guest from the 2015 dinner who lives in Geneva, had been up Mont Sala near Les Rousses and had carried his snowshoes the whole way. Fortunately, a reasonable dump of snow had fallen late in the intervening week and all we had to do was get there! Sat 14th The party used a mixture of fly-drive, rail-drive and ferry-drive to get to Les Rousses on the French side of the border.

  • Dolomitization of the Upper Jurassic Carbonate Rocks in the Geneva Basin, Switzerland and France
Swiss Journal of Geosciences (2018) 111:475–500 https://doi.org/10.1007/s00015-018-0311-x (012 3456789().,- volV)(0123456789().,-volV) Dolomitization of the Upper Jurassic carbonate rocks in the Geneva Basin, Switzerland and France 1 1 1 1 2 1 Yasin Makhloufi • Elme Rusillon • Maud Brentini • Andrea Moscariello • Michel Meyer • Elias Samankassou Received: 1 September 2017 / Accepted: 1 May 2018 / Published online: 30 May 2018 Ó Swiss Geological Society 2018 Abstract The Upper Jurassic carbonates represent important potential targeted reservoirs for geothermal energy in the Geneva Basin (Switzerland and France). Horizons affected by dolomitization, the focus of the present study, are of particular interest because they proved to be productive in time-equivalent deposits currently exploited in Southern Germany. The study is based on sub-surface samples and outcrops in the Geneva Basin. Petrographic analyses allowed to constrain the parage- nesis of the Upper Jurassic units prior to discussing the cause(s) and effect(s) of dolomitization. Data reveal that the facies are affected by early and late diagenesis. All samples show at least two stages of burial blocky calcite cementation with the exception of those from the sub-surface, which display an incomplete burial blocky cementation preserving primary intercrystalline porosity. Dolomitization affected all units. The results point to an early dolomitization event, under the form of replacement dolomite. Dedolomitization, through calcitization and/or dissolution, is an important process, creating secondary pore space. Results of the present study favor a reflux model for dolomitization rather than the mixing-zone model suggested in earlier work. However, considering the geodynamic context, other dolomitization models cannot be excluded for the subsurface.

STRATIGRAPHY MIDDLE JURASSIC PROFILES IN THE VICINITY OF GYENESPUSZTA To explore the Middle Jurassic sediments available (Text-fig. 2), the staff of the Hungarian Geological Institute carried out diggings on six sites in the vicinity of Gyenespuszta farmstead, northern Bakony Mountains, Hungary (Text-fig. 1). Each profile thus exposed comprises a different rock sequence of different facies and with a different fauna. (For the faunal lists and the profiles, see the Hungarian text.) Profile I The Dachstein Limestone is overlain with a hiatus spanning the entire Middle and Upper Liassic and the Lower Dogger, by red nodular limestone beds (Text-fig. 3), with a fauna characteristic of the Upper Bajocian Parkinsonia parkinsoni Zone. Profile II At the base of the profile (Text-fig. 4) the footwall is represented by lowermost Liassic limestones of Dachstein type that are followed by a thin manganiferous layer with ammonites characteristic of the Toarcian Hildaites serpentinum Zone. This is overlain by the Middle Jurassic ammonitico rosso limestone in which the Middle Bathonian Tulites subcontractus Zone and the Upper Bathonian Prohecticoceras retrocostatus Zone could be identified. The hanging-wall is represented by radio- larites. Profiles III and IV The two profiles have exposed a Middle Jurassic rock suit of similar litho- and biofacies, differing from the other Gyenespuszta profiles. The abundance of Bositra is conspicuous. Both lithology and fauna suggest the presence in Profile III of sediments deposited in a submarine fissure (Q fissure, see W e n d t 1971). Both profiles contain a fauna belonging to the Parkinsoni Zone. Profile V The rock types in this profile (Text-fig.
