ELIZABETH E DOBSON(1886 - 1956) DOBSON SURNAME

This most interesting surname, of medieval English origin, is a patronymic, of the medieval person- al name "Dobbe", which is itself a pet form of Robert, from "Hrodebert", a Germanic personal name composed of the elements "hrod", renown and "berht", bright, famous. Robert, though found in before the Norman Conquest, became more widespread among all classes of society afterwards. Dobb itself is a popular surname in the North of England and the Midlands. Other patronymic names from this source include Dobbin(g)s, Dob(b)inson, Dobbison and Dob- bieson. Dobson itself is also found fairly widespread in County Leitrim, Ireland, probably as a result of the influx of early English settlers into the country. One Roger Dobbessone appeared in the "En- forcement of the Statutes of Labourers, 1349 - 1359", in Cheshire (circa 1356). William Dobson (1610 - 1646), was introduced to Charles 1 by Vandyck and was one of the earliest English subject and portrait painters of eminence. John Dobson (1787 - 1865) an architect, designed new streets and public buildings in Newcastle-on-Tyne. He is reputed to be a pioneer of the modern Gothic revival. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Henry Dobbesone, which was dated 1327, in the "Subsidy Rolls of Worcestershire", during the reign of King Edward 111, known as "The Father of the Navy", 1327 - 1377.

The Dobson name is recorded 13,187 times in the 1881 census. By the time of 1998 electoral roll there had been a increase in the number to 15,554. More detailed statistics are shown below. The rate is expressed as Occurrences of the name per million names. On the distribution maps on the next page, the lowest distribution is in white and the highest distribution is coloured dark blue.

My paternal Grandmother, Elizabeth Ethel Dobson was born in Crathorne, North Yorkshire on 3rd July 1886 (B,Jul 1886, Stokesley, 9d,655). From her birth certificate we know that her father was Francis George Dobson and her mother was Christina Husband. From information provided by Ruth Gouldsbrough we know that she was born at Crathorne Mill, the reason for that becomes clear when we study the census records.

The 1891 census record for Elizabeth Ethel Dobson proved to be elusive initially as she wasn’t with her parents and also she was listed as Ethel and not Elizabeth. Two census records are shown later. One for Elizabeth’s father, Francis and the other for Elizabeth herself. When we study the 1891 census record, it shows Elizabeth’s Father and Mother living at the Mill Farm cottage at Crathorne. They lived next to his father William Dobson, a farmer. Francis George’s elder brother Thomas was also a Miller living at Crathorne. All three families are shown on one census sheet. So from this one page we find my Grandmother, Elizabeth E Dobson, her parents (my Great Grandparents), Francis George Dobson and Christina Dobson (m.s. Husband). In addition the census record for East Rounton also shows her Grandmother (my Great Great Grandmother), Elizabeth Husband. Elizabeth’s elder brother Francis William had been born at East Rounton so perhaps at the Grandparents house at Haggitt Hill in East Rounton.

By 1901 we find Elizabeth living with her parents at along with her parents and her two brothers, Francis William and John M who was aged three at the time and had been born in Hutton Rudby. This means that the family had moved to Hutton between 1891 and 1897. Her Uncle, Thomas Dobson was still living with his family at the Mill House in Crathorne, his occupation was given as Miller and Corn Merchant.

All this ties in with some information provided by Ruth Gouldsbrough. She relates that both Francis George and his brother, Thomas worked at the Corn Mill in Crathorne. Francis used to take the meal back to the farms after it was milled. However it seems that the family moved to Hutton as a result of her fathers liking for drink. Apparently he often arrived back at the Mill drunk, so the family was asked to leave the Mill.

Elizabeth worked in Domestic Service in the early part of the 20th Century, and I believe she met James Goldsbrough at Arncliffe Hall. Her first child was born on 20th July 1904 at Hutton Rudby, presumable at home because the birth certificate states that her mother Christina Dobson was present at the birth, also no father was recorded on the birth certificate. The child was a boy, John Don Eden Dobson. ELIZABETH ETHEL DOBSON [1: Grandmother]

On 22nd June 1907 she married James Goldsbrough at the Northallerton register office in the presence of their witnesses, Maria Kipling and George Moss. At the time of the wedding James was living in Clack Lane End in Osmotherley, his father was listed as deceased, and Elizabeth was living in Northallerton and her father was listed as Francis George Dobson, a corn miller. Her second child, Frederick was born later that year on the 19th August.

By around 1910 the family moved to Great Broughton where Elizabeth lived for the rest of her life until she died in 1956. The remaining children, Annie, James, George Harvey, Samuel and Ruth were born between 1910 and 1928. Also Elsie who was born in 1923 and died later that year.

Elizabeth’s first son was Don John Eden Dobson, I understand from Ruth Gouldsbrough that his father was in fact a John Eden who did pay some maintenance for Don.

In the 1911 census, an Eden family were living in North End Hutton Rudby. John Eden was aged 31 and working as carter and living at home. ELIZABETH ETHEL DOBSON - PHOTOGRAPHS

Francis George Dobson was born in Egton, Yorkshire in 1862. He lived with his parents at Dawson Garth, Egton until around the mid 1870’s when the family then moved to Mill Farm at Crathorne, Yorkshire. In 1881 the Mill was operated by James Bell and then by 1891 it was operated by Thomas and Francis as they are both described as Millers in the 1891 census.

Francis had married Christina Husband in the July/September Quarter of 1884 (m,Stokesley, 1884, Jul, 9d,783). Their first Child, Francis William was born around 1885 at East Rounton and Elizabeth was born in 1886. As we have already seen there was some problem with Francis and he had to move to Hutton Rudby presumably around 1886 just before Elizabeth was born. Their third child John Martin was born in 1897.

In the 1901 census he is described as a Millers Waggoner as it was his job to take the milled corn back to the farmer. His brother Thomas remained at the Mill because in the 1901 census he was described as a Miller and Corn Merchant. He was still alive in 1907 when Elizabeth got married.

In the 1911 census he was living in Hutton Rudby, however on the census he was described as an invalid. He died in 1912 and is buried at All Saints Church, Crathorne.

John Martin Dobson was the youngest son of Francis George Dobson and Christina Husband born in 1898 in Hutton Rudby. In both the 1901 and 1911 census he was living at home with his mother and father.

This picture of John was taken in a studio in Wakefield and must date from the First World War. A search of the World War Medal record cards revealed two soldiers called John M Dobson. However in view of the fact that his address was given as Durham when he got married it is likely that he served with the Durham Light Infantry (Service number 3442) and the Northumberland Fusiliers (Service Number 35326). It looks as if he didn’t serve in France as he only received the Victory Medal and the British Medal.

John married Annie Fawcett on the 5th October 1918 in Wakefield, a transcription of his wedding certificate shows that he was a Lance Corporal and living in Durham at the time of his wedding.

John and Annie had one child, Leslie born in 1921. The 1939 register showed that the family were living in Shipley and John was working as a French polisher.

John and Annie moved to Lancashire at some time because his death was recorded at Lancaster in 1960. I believe from Ruth Gouldsbrough that they had a guest house on Morcambe for a while. CHRISTINA HUSBAND [3: Great Grandmother]

Christina Husband (Great Grandmother) was born on 28th December 1865 at Middleton on Leven in Yorkshire, her father was William Husband, a farmer, and her mother was Elizabeth Winter. The family had moved to Middleton from Skelton around 1865. Christina continued living at Middleton Grange until she married Francis Dobson in 1884.

There don’t appear to be any photographs of Francis though I have a couple of Christina Husband. The one below shows her on the right with possibly her sister Thomasin.

I knew that Christina was still living in the 1930’s because of a four generation photograph shown earlier, however I had not been able to find a death record for her. A search of the 1939 register found a Christina with the right date of birth but she was now called Christina Exley living in Wakefield. A further search of the BMD records found that she had married Samuel Senior Exley in November 1915 in Wakefield.

With this information I was able to find that she had died in 1952, aged 86 in Wakefield
