Once two separate villages, Hutton and Rudby were united by the building of a bridge over the River Leven. The oldest and much loved building in the village is All Saints Church, parts of which date back to the 14th century. The history of the village tells of a farming community engaged in the trades supporting that way of life; blacksmiths, millers and carpenters. By the 19th century, the making of linen from locally grown fl ax had established itself in the area and the export of this material, it is said, gave the community an outward looking perspective on life and a confi dent sophistication which remains to this day. A VIBRANT VILLAGE COMMUNITY At the centre of the village is the village green, which on an annual basis plays host to a fun event where local groups and societies gather to raise funds for worthy charities. The village hall is a popular part of village life and is used for all village events, clubs, private functions and amateur dramatic productions. Adjoining the village hall is the tennis club with fl oodlit courts, and there is also a well-supported cricket club with teams from 13 years of age.
