SoundStage! Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, Steve Stills – Super Session 03.06.09 07:56 February 2009 Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, Steve Stills - Super Session Speakers Corner/Columbia Records CS 9701 Format: LP Originally Released: 1968 Reissue Released: 2008 by Joseph Taylor [email protected] Musical Performance Recording Quality Overall Enjoyment In 1968, Al Kooper had just left Blood Sweat & Tears, the horn band he had started, and was an A&R man at Columbia Records. Guitarist Mike Bloomfield, whom Kooper had played with on Highway 61 Revisited, was also between bands, so Kooper called him up and suggested they jam in the recording studio. Two other musicians, bassist Harvey Brooks and drummer Eddie Hoh, joined them for a marathon nine-hour session (pianist Barry Goldberg sat in on a couple of tracks). The next day, Bloomfield was a no show and Kooper, in a panic, cast about for another guitarist. He was lucky enough to track down Steven Stills, whose band, Buffalo Springfield, had just split up. After another long session, Kooper had enough material to create an album. Super Session, co-credited to Bloomfield, Kooper, and Stills, cost $13,000 to record and became a gold record. Kooper had horn arrangements dubbed onto some of the tunes, but otherwise they were released as originally recorded, except for some editing on a version of Donovan’s "Season of the Witch." Bloomfield is the reason to own the record. His searing guitar work is astonishing, some of the best of his brief career. He plays with focused intensity and a powerful grasp of blues tradition.

  • Breaking Down” with Premiere on All Things Go
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: AUSTRALIAN BLUES/ROCK GUITARIST, HAMISH ANDERSON, ANNOUNCES NEW SINGLE, “BREAKING DOWN” WITH PREMIERE ON ALL THINGS GO -------------- Australia-born, blues-rock artist Hamish Anderson premiered his new track, "Breaking Down" on All Things Go, who declared, “From soulful strums of a thick bass to near-rockabilly breakdowns, the young artist clearly knows the path from nostalgia to the future.” Anderson is currently on an East coast tour with The Main Squeeze and will be performing on November 17 with Doyle Bramhall II at Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles. “Breaking Down” dials up straight ahead, high energy rock and roll reminiscent of early Kings of Leon -with the swagger of 60s bands like The Kinks and The Who. Produced by 7x Grammy winner Jim Scott (whose credits include Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tom Petty), this new single is an unabashed rocker from start to finish, with a driving bass line and a breakneck drum beat backing up his rhythmic guitar styling The second single from Anderson’s upcoming album due out in 2019, "Breaking Down" follows up the single/video “No Good.” The video premiered on Billboard, who deems Anderson a “singer, songwriter and guitar hero.” That track, which debuted on Relix Magazine, was selected for Spotify’s Official ‘Nu Blues’ playlist. Anderson tells premiere partner, All Things Go: "With my new single, "Breaking Down" I wanted to write an unabashed rocker. I was listening to a lot of The Kinks, The Who and even early Kings of Leon when I wrote it -- that inspired the tone of it overall.

  • CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE – “I Ain't Lyin' . . .”
CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE – “I Ain’t Lyin’ . .” radio promotion contact: Brad Hunt, The WNS Group (585) 765-2083, [email protected] Charlie’s riveting Sonoma County show brought his unstoppable, hard hitting, tone heavy sound to the audience who couldn’t get enough. Luckily someone had turned on the tape and Charlie knew just what to do – he took the tapes down to Clarksdale MS and delivered them into the capable mixing and mastering hands of Gary Vincent who in collaboration with Charlie, brought Mississippi mud to this exceptional live recording. I AIN’T LYIN’ is all Charlie. The cd is a group of painstakingly crafted original tunes penned by the hand of this Mississippi master that resonate with the land of Mississippi itself. Charlie’s music rises from the river, crosses the levy, dances through the streets and cuts straight to the heart of what it is to be alive. Fifty years of nonstop touring, performing and recording have reaped huge rewards. Charlie Musselwhite is living proof that great music only gets better with age. This man cut his (musical) teeth alongside Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf and everyone on the south side of Chicago in the early 1960’s – thank your lucky stars he is still with us telling the truth with a voice and harp tone like no other. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Charlie Musselwhite may be the only musician to get a huge ovation just for opening his briefcase. Fans know that’s where he keeps his harmonicas and they’re about to hear one of the true masters work his magic on the humble instrument.

  • MARK FRAZEL REVIEW SAM LAY in BLUESLAND Unlocked
NEW ANDERSON DOC PROFILES BLUES LEGEND SAM LAY BY MARK FRAZEL With his astonishing, wondrous Sam Lay In Bluesland, Grammy-nominated director John Anderson vaults into the front ranks of this town’s jostling roster of exceptional documentary filmmakers. Giant steps beyond his own Born In Chicago (2013) – itself a must-see – Anderson’s new film will take its rightful place in the pantheon of all-time greatest Chicago movies. The story of 80-year-old Sam Lay unfolds in chapters of our city’s social, racial and musical history, each era or Part of which could be an entire film. Mixing rich interviews, archival clips and present-day concert performances, Anderson creates a comPelling film portrait of a blues legend. Sam Lay’s American journey took him from Birmingham, Alabama to Cleveland, then Chicago. Long-time friend and collaborator Corky Siegel says, “If you want to know about the history of the Blues, Sam Lay is the guy. He knows it because he was there. Sam’s musical, Sam’s funny, Sam’s a wild dresser, Sam’s a historic figure because he knew the people.” He was playing his copied-by-legions double-shuffle beat with Howlin’ Wolf by 1960. Lay rues the sorry altercation he had with the Wolf, which led to their parting ways. Lay admits he pulled a gun on his bandleader, probably not the wisest move. “I’d seen him before giving the bartender all the bullets from his own gun,” so wily Lay knew Wolf couldn’t harm him. With bassist Jerome Arnold and a skinny University of Chicago physics major guitarist from Tulsa named Elvin BishoP, Lay next drove the propulsive rhythm section of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.
