AVİM Commentary • No: 2019 / 38 • June 2019 OBITUARY: MAVERICK HISTORIAN AND TURKEY'S GREAT FRIEND NORMAN STONE PASSED AWAY AVİM Professor Norman Stone, who has died aged 78, was one of Britains best historians. Born in Kelvinside, Glasgow on March 8, 1941 during the years of WW II, Stone lost his father, a lawyer who served at the Royal Air Force during the war, just a year after he was born. He received his education at the Glasgow Academy and then at Cambridge University. He had taught at Cambridge and Oxford Universities for decades. As a colorful historian and a maverick intellectual, Stone produced many influential works. His command of more than 10 languages enabled him to read and gain insights from many different sources. His works often displayed masterful analyses, enriched with anecdotes and interesting facts, which gave his readers both knowledge and joy. His book The Eastern Front, 1914-1917 first published in 1975 still remains as the standard account of the Great Wars Austro-Russian front. Stone had taught and supervised a number of brilliant students. His students include world-famous historians such as Dominic Lieven, Andrew Roberts, Nial Ferguson and Orlando Figes among others. By late 1980s Stone was already emerging as a national celebrity in the UK. He had been Margaret Tatchers foreign policy advisor and speechwriter. He regularly contributed columns to the British daily newspapers and wrote extensively on history and current affairs. Professor Stones impressive linguistic skills had served him well. When the infamous forged Hitler Diaries surfaced in the 80s, Stone, who could read the old German script, had been one of the earliest historians to declare them as forged, and rightly so. -

VI, which requires attorneys to file a Certificate of Registration and pay applicable fees on or before September 1, 2005. The text of the entry imposing the suspension is reproduced below. This is followed by a list of the attorneys who were suspended. The list includes, by county, each attorney’s Attorney Registration Number. Because an attorney suspended pursuant to Gov.Bar R. VI can be reinstated upon application, an attorney whose name appears below may have been reinstated prior to publication of this notice. Please contact the Attorney Registration Section at 614/387-9320 to determine the current status of an attorney whose name appears below. In re Attorney Registration Suspension : ORDER OF [Attorney Name] : SUSPENSION Respondent. : : [Registration Number] : Gov.Bar R. VI(1)(A) requires all attorneys admitted to the practice of law in Ohio to file a Certificate of Registration for the 2005/2007 attorney registration biennium on or before September 1, 2005. Section 6(A) establishes that an attorney who fails to file the Certificate of Registration on or before September 1, 2005, but pays within ninety days of the deadline, shall be assessed a late fee. Section 6(B) provides that an attorney who fails to file a Certificate of Registration and pay the fees either timely or within the late registration period shall be notified of noncompliance and that if the attorney fails to file evidence of compliance with Gov.Bar R. -

―STRENGTHENING THE FAITH OF THE CHILDREN OF GOD‖: PIETISM, PRINT, AND PRAYER IN THE MAKING OF A WORLD EVANGELICAL HERO, GEORGE MÜLLER OF BRISTOL (1805-1898) by DARIN DUANE LENZ B.A., California State University, Bakersfield, 1997 M.A., Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, 2000 M.A., Villanova University, 2003 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2010 Abstract George Müller of Bristol (1805-1898) was widely celebrated in the nineteenth century as the founder of the Ashley Down Orphan Homes in Bristol, England. He was a German immigrant to Great Britain who was at the vanguard of evangelical philanthropic care of children. The object of his charitable work, orphans, influenced the establishment of Christian orphanages in Great Britain, North America, Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe. However, what brought Müller widespread public acclaim was his assertion that he supported his orphan homes solely by relying on faith and prayer. According to Müller, he prayed to God for the material needs of the orphans and he believed, in faith, that those needs were supplied by God, without resort to direct solicitation, through donations given to him. He employed his method as a means to strengthen the faith of his fellow Christians and published an ongoing chronicle of his answered prayers that served as evidence. Müller‘s method of financial support brought him to the forefront of public debate in the nineteenth century about the efficacy of prayer and the supernatural claims of Christianity. -

SEQUENCE 6.1(2021) ISSN 2052-3033 (Online) ‘Ontological Narratives: ways of being in film‘ Joanna Callaghan ‘SEQUENCE Journal is a project from REFRAME, an open access academic digital platform for the practice, publication and curation of internationally produced research and scholarship in media, arts and humanities’ SEQUENCE 6.1(2021) ‘Ontological Narratives: ways of being in film‘ Joanna Callaghan Introduction Ontological Narratives is a research project that explores philosophy through filmmaking practice. The project is concerned to extend and complicate notions of practice as research, through the production of a group of films which both represent and interrogate theoretical issues raised by specific philosoph- ical texts. It aims to both pursue specific research themes — questions concerning ontology and its relation to film narrative — and to question what we mean, and might mean, when we talk of practice as research. The project has forged interdisciplinary connections between film and philosophy through creative practice, a position which is largely absent from much philosophical discourse on film. It also works through a feminist standpoint, one which interrogates philosophy ontologically and epistemo- logically. In terms of philosophical content, the films from Ontological Narratives contain subject matter derived from readings of philosophers that are transformed and interrogated via fictional stories. These stories centre on or pertain to the question of being / being human. This focus on the ‘most universal and emp- tiest of concepts’ responds to Heidegger’s challenge set forth in Being and Time: ‘the indefinability of Being does not eliminate the question of its meaning: it demands that we look the question in the face’ (1990: 23). -

A History of World War II
Prof. Stefan Ihrig student meetings by appointment [email protected] A History of World War II This course will offer an in-depth look at World War II and how it played out in Europe. It will combine military history with political and social aspects of the war. The course seeks to offer a comprehensive picture of a conflict that claimed the lives of tens of millions of peoples. It will do so by analyzing different perceptions, levels, and layers of the conflict. The course will also touch upon questions of remembrance, justice, and portrayals in popular culture. Furthermore, by including recently discovered footage and other sources from the time, it is hoped that this course will challenge existing trends that put this conflict into a very distant and removed past. This course will open up important perspectives on the Holocaust. In light of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and to make this course more engaging, this course is focused on student projects. Besides reading, thinking, and taking part in discussions, it will be essential to become engaged with some of the core topics more deeply and to investigate a bit on your own. What you will have to do Besides coming with an open mind and developing your own interests, you will have to do three main things: 1) read and participate, 2) various special projects (intro video, book video, soldiers clip (team project), devil’s advocate clip (team project), short written feedback on three topics), 3) write a final paper (around eight pages long). For your orientation, there is a checklist of your assignments at the end of this syllabus.
