University of Sydney 2016 KEON ESKY Fig. 1 Raffaello Sanzio, ‘La Disputa’ (detail) 1510-11, Fresco - Stanza della Segnatura, Palazzi Pontifici, Vatican. KEON ESKY ii I dedicate this thesis to my late father who would have wanted me to embark on such a journey, and to my partner who with patience and love has never stopped believing that I could do it. KEON ESKY iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This thesis owes a debt of gratitude to many people in many different countries, and indeed continents. They have all contributed in various measures to the completion of this endeavour. However, this study is deeply indebted first and foremost to my supervisor Dr. Francesco Borghesi. Without his assistance throughout these many years, this thesis would not have been possible. For his support, patience, motivation, and vast knowledge I shall be forever thankful. He truly was my Virgil. Besides my supervisor, I would like to thank the whole Department of Italian Studies at the University of Sydney, who have patiently worked with me and assisted me when I needed it. My sincere thanks go to Dr. Rubino and the rest of the committees that in the years have formed the panel for the Annual Reviews for their insightful comments and encouragement, but equally for their firm questioning, which helped me widening the scope of my research and accept other perspectives.

  • Saint Mary Magdalene, with an Angel [Left Panel]
National Gallery of Art NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART ONLINE EDITIONS Italian Thirteenth and Fourteenth Century Paintings Pietro Lorenzetti Sienese, active 1306 - 1345 Saint Mary Magdalene, with an Angel [left panel] probably 1340 tempera on panel transferred to canvas painted surface: 89.2 × 41 cm (35 1/8 × 16 1/8 in.) overall: 92.1 × 44.1 cm (36 1/4 × 17 3/8 in.) Gift of Frieda Schiff Warburg in memory of her husband, Felix M. Warburg 1941.5.1.a ENTRY The central Madonna and Child of this triptych, which also includes this panel of Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Catherine of Alexandria, with an Angel [right panel], proposes a peculiar variant of the so-called Hodegetria type. The Christ child is supported on his mother’s left arm and looks out of the painting directly at the observer, whereas Mary does not point to her son with her right hand, as is usual in similar images, but instead offers him cherries. The child helps himself to the proffered fruit with his left hand, and with his other is about to pop one of them into his mouth.[1] Another unusual feature of the painting is the smock worn by the infant Jesus: it is embellished with a decorative band around the chest; a long, fluttering, pennant-like sleeve (so-called manicottolo);[2] and metal studs around his shoulders. The group of the Madonna and Child is flanked by two female saints. The saint to the left can be recognized as Saint Mary Magdalene by the cylindrical pyx of ointment in her hand,[3] while Saint Catherine of Alexandria is identified by her crown and by the wheel of martyrdom she supports with her right hand, half concealing it below her mantle.[4] Both this saint and the two angels in the gable above Mary’s head bear a palm in their hand.[5] Though signed and dated by the artist [fig.

  • Italian Fascist Writers and the United States Charles Burdett
Different Visions of Space: Italian Fascist Writers and the United States Charles Burdett University of Bristol Fascist Italy and the United States The history of the relationship between Fascist Italy and the United States is a complex one. In the 1920s Mussolini enjoyed a good deal of esteem among American politicians and businesspeople, as the man who had restored Italy’s economic fortunes, who had quelled social agitation and who had repulsed the threat of Communism. From 1923 onwards American journalists made frequent visits to Italy and reported favourably on the innovations made by the Duce, who, in the words of David Schmitz, ‘quickly became a celebrity in the American press and in popular opinion’.1 The Republican leaders were willing to ignore the destruction of democratic rights and institutions in Italy and to reduce Italy’s debt payments to the States. American investment in Italy increased significantly until 1929. The Depression ended the American facility of influencing policies in Italy through financial incentive, but it did not mark a substantial change in relations between the two countries. When Roosevelt came to office in 1933 there was little, if any change in US policy towards Italy. It was not until the autumn of 1935 and the invasion of Ethiopia that Italo-American relations were placed under severe strain. Yet, American politicians were prepared even then to continue a policy of economic appeasement in the hope that Mussolini would act as a restraining force on Hitler. In Italy perceptions of the United States were more ambiguous and more contradictory. Different feelings displayed contrasts between those who supported the regime and those who did not, they also demonstrated clashes of opinion within the ranks of Fascist sympathisers.

  • University of Cambridge Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages
University of Cambridge Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages Popular Magazines in Fascist Italy, 1934 – 1943 A dissertation submitted by Manuela Di Franco Sidney Sussex College For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) April 2018 The dissertation examines the field of popular magazines in 1930s Italy, by first examining the broad field of magazine production under Fascism and then undertaking three case studies of individual magazines – L’Avventuroso (1934 – 1943), Omnibus (1937 – 1939), and Grazia (1938 –) – in order to build an in-depth analysis of the production, format and reception of the popular press in this period. In the interwar years, and in particular from 1934 onwards, innovative printing techniques and production methods transformed the periodical press worldwide. The emergence of new forms of illustrated magazines expanded the readership and started a process of standardisation and mass production of periodicals. The dissemination in Italy of the rotocalco, a new product aimed at the masses that was developed in the 1930s, offers a particularly interesting starting point for analysing the development of a modern Italian mass press and culture within the peculiar dynamics of a controlling Fascist regime and the mixed national and international forces that shaped it. Modern Italian magazines developed in dialogue with foreign industries, imitating models from abroad and adapting them to the Italian culture. The development of popular press in the 1930s represented a challenge for the Fascist regime, which approached it both as a threat and an opportunity to shape Italian popular culture. Through the analysis of three case studies, each from a key sector of popular press – comics, general cultural magazines, and women's magazines – and each produced by one of the three main publishing companies in the field – Nerbini, Rizzoli, and Mondadori – the dissertation aims to provide a detailed picture of the development of mass print culture in Italy during Fascism.

Araştırma Makalesi Research Article ISSN 2548-0502 2018; 3(2): 153-167 Emilio Cecchi’s Travel to Greece Among Arcadian Myth, Modernity of Antique and Western Intellectual Stereotypes DR. ÖĞR. ÜYESİ CRISTIANO BEDIN* Abstract In 20th century, an increasing number of people have started to travel to Greece considered as the cradle of Western civilization. However, in some cases when lots of travelers couldn’t find the reality as they imagined, they got disappointed and denigrated the Modern Greek society and landscape. Greece image of Emilio Cecchi (1884-1966) who is a writer, literary critic and art historian, is completely different from this thought. He traveled to the Hellenic territory in 1934 and wrote a travel book entitled as Et in Arcadia ego by using his experience. This “fanatic of classical antiquity” is interested in Classical Greece’s history, art and literature that exists in memories and continues to live in the landscape. In this article, we intend to reveal the stereotypes in Et in Arcadia ego that is a product of a general ideology reached nowadays by examining this approach. Keywords: Emilio Cecchi, Travel to Greece, Arcadia, Ancient, Stereotypes ARKADYALI MİT, ANTİĞİN MODERNLİĞİ VE BATILI ENTELEKTÜEL STEREOTİPLER ARASINDA EMILIO CECCHI’NİN YUNANİSTAN SEYAHATİ Öz 20. yüzyılda, giderek artan sayıda insan, Batı medeniyetinin beşiği olarak kabul edilen Yunanistan'a seyahat etmeye başladı.

  • Italy's Postcolonial Cinema and Its Histories of Representation
ITALIAN STUDIES, VOLUME 63, NUMBER 2, AUTUMN 2008 ITALY’S POSTCOLONIAL CINEMA AND ITS HISTORIES OF REPRESENTATION abstract A number of recent fi lms have explored migration to Italy. Responses tend to focus on the nov- elty of this phenomenon in relation to Italian history, and to the history of Italian cinema as a nation building project. I argue, however, that these fi lms need to be seen in terms of how they racialize the non-Italian subject, and that they are embedded in complex histories of Italian colo- nialism, and emigration. After surveying work on Italian cinema that engages with questions of race, I consider the representation of Albanian migrants in Munzi’s Saimir (2004). Despite the fi lm’s sympathetic take on the efforts of clandestine, Albanian migrants to integrate into Italian society, it is mired in a tradition of representation that systematically constructs the non-Italian as extraneous to the nation. Saimir can be seen as a postcolonial fi lm as its representational economy depends on, and extends, a colonial logic of racial difference. KEYWORDS migration, colonialism, race, Albania, Saimir, postcolonial What difference might a consideration of race and colonial history make to an under- standing of Italian cinema, and in particular to its often-reiterated function as the crucible in which national identity is formed? The contemporary relevance of the question owes much to responses to recent migration to Italy, and to the rekindling of memories of Italy’s own history of emigration and colonialism.1 The presence of what is perceived to be a large number of non-Italians now resident in Italy has dramatized the non-homogeneity of the national space, and overtly politicized questions around citizenship and its entitlements.

  • Foreign Literature in Fascist Italy: Circulation and Censorship La Littérature Étrangère En Italie Fasciste : Circulation Et Censure Jane Dunnett
