CLASSROOM COUNTRY PROFILES AZERBAIJAN (Azərbaycan ) Azerbaijan is the easternmost republic in the Caucasus with a large portion of coastline on the Caspian Sea. Since ancient times, Azerbaijan has been famous for its oil and natural gas. Zoroastrians, for whom fire held sacred value, would build tem- ples around natural gas vents in the highlands. In the early 20th century, Azerbaijan provided nearly half of the world’s oil supply and continues to this day to be a major exporter of oil. The capi- tal city of Baku is located on a narrow peninsula that extends into the Caspian Sea. Azerbaijan has been a subject of a large number of imperial powers over the years, Persian, Ottoman, Russian and Soviet, most recently. Azerbaijan possesses an exclave between Armenia and Iran, called Nakhchivan. Azerbaijan is controlled by a secular state, however the population is Population: 9,872,765 (July 2016 est.) reportedly 83% adherents of Shia Islam. • Karabakh Is Azerbaijan!
Karabakh is Azerbaijan! Karabakh is ancestral Azerbaijani land, one of its historical regions. Musa MARJANLI The name of this region translates into Russian as a “black garden”. Editor-in-Chief According to another version, it is a “large garden” or a “dense garden”. Up until the region was seized by the Russian Empire at the beginning of the 19th century, Karabakh was part of various Azerbaijani states. I will not bore you with arguments about who lived in Karabakh, who ruled it in certain historical periods – materials about that are available in most of the previous issues of IRS-Heritage. I only want to note that until the beginning of the 20th century, there was not a single Armenian ruler in Karabakh and indeed on the territory of present-day Armenia. This fact is graphic evidence that the Armenians always constituted an insignificant part of the population of these regions. On 14 May 1805, the ruler of the Karabakh Khanate, Ibrahim Khan, and the commander of the Russian troops, Prince P. Tsitsianov, signed the Treaty of Kurekchay, according to which the khanate was included in the Russian Empire. Subsequently, the Gulustan Peace Treaty of 18 October 1813 and the Turkmenchay Peace Treaty of 10 February 1828, signed as a result of two Russian-Iranian wars, formalized the final transfer of northern Azerbaijani khanates to the Russian Empire. Having taken possession of this land, Russia, striving to reinforce the Christian presence in the region, immediately began a systematic resettlement of Armenians here from Iran and the Ottoman Empire, placing them primarily on the lands of the former Azerbaijani khanates.

  • To a Millennial Kingdom: the Nazi Aryanization of Christianity
TO A MILLENIAL KINGDOM: THE NAZI ARYANIZATION OF CHRISTIANITY Daniel Lucca Honors Thesis: Department of History University of Colorado Boulder Defense Date: April 5th, 2018 Defense Committee: Primary Advisor: Dr. David Shneer, Department of History Outside Advisor: Dr. Saskia Hintz, Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures Honors Council Representative: Dr. Matthew Gerber, Department of History Dan Lucca To a Millennial Kingdom: The Nazi Aryanization of Christianity One of the most defining characteristics of the Nazi regime was a virulent antisemitism, which manifested itself in the ideology and actions of the Nazi leaders and party. For instance, in his work Mein Kampf (My Struggle), Hitler demonstrated virulent antisemitism by portraying the Jew as a parasitic being that corrupts others. As parasites, Hitler believed that Jews are “people without any true culture, especially their own.”1 This disdain for the Jews manifested itself in many hateful laws and acts. one of the most important being the strategy of Arisierung (Aryanization), which began in 1933. The process of Aryanization, according to Roderick Stackelberg and Sally A. Winkle, largely refers to the process of confiscating and selling off of Jewish property.2 However, Aryanization also encompassed the process of the removal everything that was Jewish or perceived to have Jewish influence from Germany. Besides the confiscation of Jewish property, the process of Aryanization included, but was not limited to: the destruction of Jewish books in book burnings, the exclusion of Jews from participating in national sports teams, and the the removal from Jews from the civil service and professions, the ban on Jews performing German music, and many other laws that seeped into every aspect of German society and culture during the Third Reich.

Ringing in the New Year, with the festivities usually starting on the evening of December 31 (see also New Year's Eve - December 31), it is one of the most thrilling annual events in Latvia. Usually people stay up until past midnight, and exactly at midnight they toast each other with champagne, wishing everyone a happy New Year. • The Victory Day Celebrations in Israel in the Light of Articles in Russian-Language Israeli Web Portals
Studia Judaica 23 (2020), nr 2 (46), s. 357–373 doi:10.4467/24500100STJ.20.016.13659 Krystian Propola https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6710-7203 The Victory Day Celebrations in Israel in the Light of Articles in Russian-Language Israeli Web Portals Abstract: The main aim of the article is to present a picture of contemporary celebrations of the Victory Day in Israel from the perspective of reports from Russian-language Israeli web portals. Although the tradition of celebrations dates back to 1950, the Victory Day did not become an official public holiday until 2017. Established on 9 May as the day of remembrance for the veterans of World War II, it resulted from the actions of the Russian-speaking population in Israel on two levels. The first was the political sphere and the activity of immigrant parties, especially Yisrael Beiteinu, in the work of the Knesset. The other was the social activity of local activists. However, both of these factors would not have been so effective if it were not for the reports of Russian-language Israeli media, in particular web portals. Although the arguments of the journalists associated with the portals were not always fully justified, their work contributed to the in- creased interest in the issue of veterans in Israel and Victory Day celebrations. Keywords: Victory Day, Russian-language web portals in Israel, Victory Day Parade, media, Russian Jews. Słowa kluczowe: Dzień Zwycięstwa, rosyjskojęzyczne portale internetowe w Izraelu, Parada Zwycięstwa, media, Żydzi rosyjscy. Introduction The influx of Russian-speaking immigrants from the lands of the former Soviet state caused irreversible changes in the social sphere of Israel.
