Among the storage pests, psocids were ignored in the past due to unavailability of the significant evidence regarding quantitative and qualitative losses caused by them. Their economic importance has been recognized by many re- searchers around the globe since the last few years. The published reports suggest that the pest be recognized as a new risk for global food security and safety. Psocids have been found infesting stored grains in the USA, Australia, UK, Brazil, Indonesia, China, India and Pakistan. About sixteen species of psocids have been identified and listed as pests of stored grains. Psocids generally prefer infested kernels having some fungal growth, but are capable of excavating the soft endosperm of damaged or cracked uninfected grains. Economic losses due to their feeding are directly pro- portional to the intensity of infestation and their population. The pest has also been reported to cause health problems in humans. Keeping the economic importance of psocids in view, their phylogeny, distribution, bio-ecology, manage- ment and pest status have been reviewed in this paper. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new ptiloneurid genus from Brazil, Brasineura n. gen., is described and illustrated. It includes two species, both known only from males, one from the Chapada Diamantina (State of Bahia), and one troglophilic species from the State of Pará. It differs from all other known ptiloneurid genera, in which the males are known, by the unique structure of the phallo- some, and by having a uniquely shaped hypandrium of a single sclerite. An updated identification key to the genera of Ptiloneuridae is presented and the synonymy between Brisacia and Loneura is proposed. Key words: taxonomy, Neotropics, Epipsocetae Introduction Ptiloneuridae is one of the families in the psocomorphan infraorder Epipsocetae (Yoshizawa 2002). It presently includes the genera Belicania García Aldrete, Euplocania Enderlein, Omilneura García Aldrete, Perucania New & Thornton, Timnewia García Aldrete, Triplocania Roesler, Willreevesia García Aldrete, all with the hindwing vein M unbranched, and Loneura Navás, Loneuroides García Aldrete, Ptiloneura Enderlein, and Ptiloneuropsis Roesler, these last four genera with hindwing vein M having from 2 to 5 branches. -

[email protected]. 1 INTRODUCTION Psocoptera (psocids, booklice or barklice) are a paraphyletic assemblage of non-parasitic members of the order Psocodea (Lyal, 1985; Yoshizawa & Johnson, 2003, 2005; Johnson et al., 2004), containing about 5500 described species (Lienhard, 2003). They are about 1 to 10 mm in length and characterized by well-developed postclypeus, long antennae, pick-like lacinia, reduced prothorax, well-developed pterothorax, etc. Phylogenetically, Psocoptera compose a monophyletic group (the order Psocodea) with parasitic lice ('Phtiraptera': biting lice and sucking lice) (Lyal, 1985; Yoshizawa & Johnson, 2003, in press; Johnson et al., 2004). The order is related to Thysanoptera (thrips) and Hemiptera (bugs, cicadas, etc.) (Yoshizawa & Saigusa, 2001, 2003, but see also Yoshizawa & Johnson, 2005). -

E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Two species of Triplocania, known so far only from Córdoba, Veracruz, México, are here described and illustrated; they rise to five the number of species of Triplocania in Mexico. T. delgadoi n. sp., is close to two Central American species, but differs from them in the forewing pigmentation pattern and in the structure of the female ninth sternum. T. halffterorum is unique in the genus by presenting two striking autapomorphies: a hypandrium of one sclerite, with two anterior projections bent posteriorly, and two sausage-shaped projections in the female ninth sternum; it constitutes a distinct species group in the genus. The types are deposited in the National Insect Collection (CNIN), Instituto de Biología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Key words: Taxonomy, neotropics, species groups, endemics. RESUMEN Dos species de Triplocania, conocidas hasta ahora solo de Córdoba, Veracruz, México, son aquí descritas e ilustradas; con ellas se eleva a cinco el número de especies de Triplocania en México. T. delgadoi es cercana a dos especies centroamericanas, pero difiere de ellas en el patrón de pigmentación del ala anterior y en la estructura del noveno esternito de la hembra. T. halffterorum es única en el género, por presentar dos notables autapomorfías: hipandrio de un esclerito, con dos proyecciones anteriores dirigidas posteriormente, y dos proyecciones en forma de salchicha en el noveno esternito de la hembra; esta especie constituye un grupo de especies muy diferente en el género. -

Introduction The group under consideration here is the classic order Psocoptera as defined in the Torre- Bueno Glossary of Entomology (Nichols & Shuh, 1989). Although this group is unquestionably paraphyletic (see Lyal, 1985, Yoshizawa & Lienhard, 2010), these free-living, non-ectoparasitic forms are readily recognizable. In defining North America for this chapter, I adhere closely to Shelford (1963, Fig. 1-9), but I shall use the Tropic of Cancer as the southern cut-off line, and I exclude the Antillean islands. Although the ranges of many species of Psocoptera extend across the Tropic of Cancer, the inclusion of the tropical areas would involve the comparison of relatively well- studied regions and relatively less well-studied regions. The North America Psocoptera, as defined above, comprises a faunal list of 397 species in 90 genera and 27 families ( Table 1) . Comparisons are made here with several other relatively well-studied faunas. The psocid fauna of the Euro-Mediterranean region, summarized by Lienhard (1998) with additions by the same author (2002, 2005, 2006) and Lienhard & Baz (2004) has a fauna of 252 species in 67 genera and 25 families. As would be expected, nearly all of the families are shared between the two regions. The only two families not shared are Ptiloneuridae and Dasydemellidae, which reach North America but not the western Palearctic. Ptiloneuridae has a single species and Dasydemellidae two in North America. The rather large differences at the generic and specific levels are probably due to the much greater access that these insects have for invasion of North America from the tropics than invasion from the tropics in the Western Palearctic.
