He loved it so much that he started a group, complete with a small journal, that he called the American Gloxinia Society. The Society lived on, thrived, acquired more members, studied the Gloxinia and its relatives, gesneriads. After a while, the name of the society changed to the American Gloxinia and Gesneriad Society. The journal, THE GLOXINIAN, grew thicker and glossier. More study and research were conducted on the family, more members and chapters came in, and the name was changed again – this time to The Gesneriad Society. Nowadays, a boy who falls in love with the same plant would have to call it Sinningia speciosa. To be honest, the American Sinningia Speciosa Society does not have the same ring. So in order to talk "Gloxinia," the boy would have to talk about Gloxinia perennis, still a gesneriad, but a totally different plant. Unless, of course, he went for the common name of the spec- tacular Sinningia and decided to found The American Florist Gloxinia Society. -

This thesis has not in whole or in part been previously presented for any degree Subhani Wathsala Ranasinghe 24th January 2017. i Abstract The plant family Gesneriaceae is represented in Sri Lanka by six genera: Aeschynanthus, Epithema, Championia, Henckelia, Rhynchoglossum and Rhynchotechum, with 13 species (plus one subspecies/variety) of which ten are endemic including the monotypic genus Championia, according to the last revision in 1981. They are exclusively distributed in undisturbed habitats, and some have high ornamental value. The species are morphologically diverse, but face a problem of taxonomic delineation, which is further complicated by the presence of putative hybrids. -

It is the first detailed and overall classification of the family that is essentially based on molecular phylogenetic studies. Three subfamilies are recognized: Sanangoideae (monospecific with Sanango racemosum), Gesnerioideae and Didymocarpoideae. As to recent molecular data, Sanango/Sanangoideae (New World) is sister to Gesnerioideae + Didymocarpoideae. Its inclusion in the Gesneriaceae amends the traditional concept of the family and makes the family distinctly older. Subfam. Gesnerioideae (New World, if not stated otherwise with the tribes) is subdivided into five tribes: Titanotricheae (monospecific, East Asia), Napeantheae (monogeneric), Beslerieae (with two subtribes: Besleriinae and Anetanthinae), Coronanthereae (with three subtribes: Coronantherinae, Mitrariinae and Negriinae; southern hemisphere), and Gesnerieae [with five subtribes: Gesneriinae, Gloxiniinae, Columneinae (5the traditional Episcieae), Sphaerorrhizinae (5the traditional Sphaerorhizeae, monogeneric), and Ligeriinae (5the traditional Sinningieae)]. Leaf explants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with different combinations of benzylaminopurine (BAP) and naphthalene-acetic acid (NAA) for shoot induction. MS media including BAP (2 mg/L) and NAA (0.1 mg/L) resulted in the highest efficiency in shoot regeneration per explant (12.3 ± 0.8) and in the greatest shoot growth (1.2 ± 0.1 cm) after 6 weeks. For improving shoot induction, the ethylene inhibitor silver nitrate and the polyamine putrescine were added to the regeneration medium. The addition of silver nitrate (7 mg/L) increased the shoot number (23.9 ± 1.6) and length (1.7 ± 0.2 cm) after 6 weeks. Similarly, putrescine (50 mg/L) improved the shoot number (19.2 ± 1.6) and growth (1.7 ± 0.2 cm). The rooted plants were hardened and transferred to soil with a 90% survival rate. -

(Photos: Billy Moore). 2 EDITORIAL Imagine the sense of achievement that Liam Byrne must have felt when his seed-raised plant of Ramonda myconi was awarded the Farrer Medal at this year’s Dublin Show. Most of his earlier ‘Farrer’ plants were also raised from seed. It is, of course, a triumph to win this award irrespective of the source of the plant, but there is an extra dimension when the grower has brought the plant from seed to best at Show. But leaving Farrer Medals and showing aside, the satisfaction to be obtained from raising plants from seed is immense. Growing from seed is also very easy, it is ridiculously cheap especially if the seed is obtained from the seed exchange, and, perhaps most importantly, it is the best way to acquire rarities. Seed-raised plants will also be free of disease and generally speaking will have more robust constitutions than those propagated from cuttings for example. In order to avoid incurring the wrath of commercial growers I must make it clear that there is no suggestion that growing from seed precludes the purchase of plants: indeed some of the most committed seed sowers that I know are the best customers of good nurseries. -

The genus Ornithoboea C.B.Clarke (Gesneriaceae) from limestone habitats in Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), Laos, Vietnam and Southern China is revised. It has 16 species, three of which are newly described: Ornithoboea maxwellii S.M.Scott from Thailand, Ornithoboea puglisiae S.M.Scott from Thailand and Ornithoboea obovata S.M.Scott from Vietnam. The plants are characterised by small, bilabiate flowers with a distinctive palatal beard on the lower lobes and a circlet of hairs around the mouth of the corolla tube. A key is provided, all species are described, and distribution maps and IUCN conservation assessments are given for all species. Keywords. Karst limestone, Ornithoboea, taxonomic revision Introduction The genus Ornithoboea C.B.Clarke (Gesneriaceae) consists of a group of herbaceous plants on karst limestone from Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), Laos, Vietnam and Southern China, its most northerly occurrence. No species have yet been recorded from Cambodia. Ornithoboea was first described by Clarke (1883) from a specimen sent to him by the Rev. C. Parish from his collections in Burma. The specimen was accompanied by a drawing and analysis by Parish who commented on its resemblance to Boea except for the corolla and broader submembranous capsule. Clarke (1883) also compared it to Boea but stated that the capsule valves are more twisted, a comment that was probably why three more Ornithoboea species published soon thereafter, all of Chinese origin, were included in Boea rather than Ornithoboea.
