Dear Cousins,
Recently, the ADDENDUM TO MAYFLOWER VOLUME III, was compl eted and distributed (initially as an "in house" publication) to the Governors and Historians of the various states.
As you are well aware, there are differing op1n1ons regarding whether or not some of the information in MF3 is erroneous. Governor General Dwight Twist appointed a Genealogical Review Panel, chaired by Past Governor General, Dr. Lee D. van Antwerp, to judge the material presented for inclusion in the addendum. Soule Family Historian, Dr. Milton E. Terry and the Editor of Volume III, Miss Anne Borden Harding, were reluctant to do so because both feared that their contributions might not receive the same consideration as those of their critics. Dr. Twist has stated that in his view, the proposed changes in the MF3 addendum could be presented to Dr. Terry and Miss Harding for critical review prior to the time that i t was to go to the jury. Dr. Terry has informed me that that was not done. Dr. Terry further stated that to his knowledge, no jury member attempted to contact him regarding either his views or to obtain information from his files of either a supporting or nonsupporting nature. To date, I am unaware of any written statement from any of the panel members regarding t heir findings. One wonders if they served merely as unquestioning editors, or did they indeed question any of t he material presented to them? It would be gratifying to know that a "rubber stamp" was not routinely and regularly applied to each page of the addendum.
Much has been said of the need for facts in genealogical research. Indeed, we all wish for information with attendant proofs. Oftentimes the proof seems to have vanished. Thus reputable genealogists not infrequentl y attempt to reconstruct situations knowing some of t he facts, but not necessarily all of t hem . Among the sci ences, archaemlogy, paleontology, and anthropology are disciplines that frequently effectively use deductive reasoning. Educated guesses and suppositions should not necessarily be disdained. Mr . Thompson and Mr. Anderson have written much of the need for proof. Yet to refute Dr. Terry and Mi~Harding ' s position, they, too, have used supposition. If they can use the educated guess in t heir arguments, why then do they insi st that we not have the same privilege? .Frankly, in my opinion, it comes down to the denominator of just who is holding the reins of the horse,
Dr. Terry is now in possession of an Addendum t o MFJ. Work is well under way on a rebuttal, and he is hopeful that it will be largel y completed and ready for our inspection by the time of our September reunion in Plymouth. At that t ime, the Kindred may wish to di scuss whether or not we should proceed to publish an addendum of our own foll owing critical r eview by a panel of review.

Mr. Tiffin was regarded as one of the elder deans of the legal profession in Boston, an associate said. A former resident of. West Newton, he served on the Board of Aldermen there from 1936 until 1939. At the time of his death, he was active in the Second Church of Newton. He and his wife, Celia {Hopkins), for many years raised great dane dogs, and he was active in many organizations involved in raising pure-bred dogs. He was secretary to the Eastern Dog Club and was_ a licensed judge for the American Kennel Club. He traveled widely in the U.S. and abroad to judge dog shows. He was a member of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society and the Mayflower Society. He was president of the Alden Kindred, a genealogical society whose national headquarters are on Alden St., Duxbury, and was counsel general of the NationaU!uguenot Society. Friends have dropped in to express their best wishes and many cards and letters have been received . The Federal Member of Parliament representing Guelph and area came to visit Clyde bringing a plaque with congratulations and best wishes from the Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Trudeau. The Governor General of Canada also sent his congratulations in the form of a scroll. Congratulations were also received from the Premier of Ontario and a plate from the City of Guelph delivered by the Mayor of Guelph. Clyde Soule was born to Fred and Flora Soule in 1894 at Union City, PA. He left Jamestown, PA in 1914 with his father, mother ~ sisters to farm in the North Battleford area of Saskatchewan in Western Canada. In 1920, Clyde took a poultry course at the University in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and was hired by the Poultry Dept. of the University as a fieldman. He worked for the Dept. for 20 years from October to March each year travelling about the province of Saskatchewan, but continuing to farm during the summer months. Clyde married Annie Barlow in 1922. They farmed on the family homestead, when Clyde's parents decided to return to Warren, PA. Clyde and Annie lived in Saskatoon for 5 years, then returned to their own farm next to the family homestead. Clyde was director of the SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER VOLUME XVIII, No. 2 APRIL, 1984 5 7 local Agricultural Society and a trustee of the local public school boArd for many years. Clyde and Annie have four children, Ele~nor, Wayne~ Marc and George. They have 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In 1940 Clyde, Annie and family moved to Guelph, Ontario where Clyde felt there were good educational facilities for the children and more opportuni ties for work. Clyde worked as gardener for four yeara. In 1944 he wrote a civil service. exam for a position as a Federal poultry fieldman and hatchery inspector and was hired by the Federal Dept·. of Agriculture. He continued with this work for 20 years. ( Clyde has been active with the Guelph Horticultural Society for many years since his retirement. He has had several positions on the executive committee and is now a past director. He has received many awards in horticulture and was nominated a ''Citizen of the Year'' award in Guelph for his outstanding service in horticulture. A family dinner was held recently for Annie Soule on the occasion of her 80th birthday on Feb. 12, 1984. She received many cards and notes from her friends and beautiful flowers from the family. Ann Haria Drake's genealogy takes her faaily through the Drake, Walker, and Soule lineage. On April 24, 1924, I graduated froa High School at Stinesvelle, Indiana at the age of 16 years and 13 days. Harris (Mrs. Harris (Betty) is a former president of Soule Kindred, from 1976-1978 . She also was the hostess for the Kindred Reunion in San Antonio in 1973. Earlier installments of Mrs. Harris' story appeared in the Newsletter in January 1981, April 1982, July 1982, and July 1983 and will continue through 1984.) ' LEAVING WORCESTERSHIRE At some point George left his home place to join the other passengers who were to sail on the MAYFLOWER. It isn't likely that he would have made the journey alone, partly because of the danger of becoming lost away from a town at night, or that he might become waylaid by brigands. There ·v~as much robbery at the time. Even gentlemen indulged in thievery on occasion. He may have accompanied Edward Winslow's younger brother, Gilbert, to the ship, or at least to London. Gilbert was the first of Edward's brothers to come to the New World. The remaining brothers arrived by later ships. How they traveled, whether by foot or on horseback, is not certain but it surely had to be one or the other for there were no other means out in the country. One wonders how the young George felt on leaving his hear~h and home. The pleasant village would have been an endearing place. Eckington was not too different in George's youth than it had been 600 years before, when it was described by the chronicler, William Malmsbury: "A land rich in grain, productive of fruit in some parts by art of cultivation, enticing the lazy to work by the prospect· of a hundredfold return. You can see the highway clothed with trees that produce apples, not by the grafters hand, but by the nature of the ground itself. For- ·the earth of it's own accord rears them up to fruit with excellent flavor and appearance. Many do not wither for a year, nor before new crops are produced to take their place." Today's guidebook of Worcestershire notes that the production of fruit still remains the impression of those who know the south ern part of the county t oday. It was, if you recall. English Literature, that, "On a May morning on Malvern Hills", the Medieval poet, Langland, had his VISION OF PIERS PLOWMAN. The Avon River winds west from Shakespeara~· s home at Stratford on Avonsituated in the adjoining county. It passes nearby Eckington and Evesham on it • s way to meet the Severn. Evesham was an ancient place even when George knew it. He must have heard tales of it's architectural glory before the Dissolution of the Monasteries from his elders. That terror had come in the decades before he was born. There was almost total destruction of all religious build ings in Evesham, but the lovely Tower of Pershore Abbey, just over the way from Eckington was only partly destroyed. It is interesting to learn how early thecounty of Worcestershire became Christian. It became, in the Middle Ages, a great ecclesiast ical center. In the seventh century the see of Worcester was establ ished, with its jurisdiction corresponding closely to the area of the area of the county. The ford across the Severn at Worcester was the chief highway forChristian missionaries penetrating into heathen Wales. There followed a succession of Saxon Bishops, and Bishop Oswald in the ninth century founded the first large Benedictine Monastery in England. It was the first of many monastic establishments Which left their mark on the shire. The Benedictines came to Pershore, Evesham and Malvern. The Franciscans and Dominicans came to the city of Worcester itself. The Cluniacs came to Dudley and later the Austin Friars came to Droitwich. It came about that at the end of the Middle Ages, Worcestershire was perhaps the greatest stronghold of monasticism in the country. !¥follows that the suppression of the monasteries caused a great upheaval in land ownership, and the new merchant class that was SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER VOLUME XVIII, No. 2 APRIL, 1984 65 then coming into power reaped the benefit.Robert Sole, wealthy salter .of. London, who came from Ecking ton, must have taken advantage of the time.It also followed ·that Worcestershire was strong 'tor the Catholic faith. How these circumstances and background wouid ha~e affe·cted George's family are not hard to imagine. Referring to the ruins of nearby Pershore Abbey of George's memory, Leatherbarrow writes in a 1974 guidebook how it stands today: · t" "A wide expanse of greensward leads to the west door between two modern (1847. buttresses. Can we i magine a great Norman nave, like ·t Tewkesbury or Glouster stretching westward? The intact Pershore Abbey was 325 feet long with arches at 50 feet high. Onl y a situation like this and a comparison with surviving buildings elsewhere can really impress us with the vast destruction which was wrought at the Disso lution. This Abbey of Pershore bears the name, Holy Cross,appears t o have been founded as a secular community of canons as early as 690. There were 7arious changes in station until. it became a regular estab lishment of Benedictine monks who received their charter from .King ~dgar in 972." Leatherbarrow continues: "It was richly endowed with lands in Worcestershire and Gloucestershire, and with salt pans in Droitwich, but some of it's resources were alienated when King Edward took some portions to enrich his new foundation at Westminster, (London). The close connection between Pershore and Westminster is exemplified by the fact that the Dean and Chapter of Westminster are still patrons of the living of Pershore." The above reference to the salt of Droitwich follows the thread of propinquity once again through the Soule-Sole family of Eckington, .t. (Robert1. salter), the Winslows of Droitwich, and the neighboring Sandys ' · :in· ·the:ir. ·hmne-.areas. Robert Soule -sole was a contemporary of Bishop Edwin Sandys. Not only were they neighbors, but it is likely they were associated in a business way having to do with the salt production through the Bishop's jurisdiction of Pershore Abbey. To explain: The Sandys' were father and son. Sir Edwin was · the son of Bishop Edwin Sandys . Sir Edwin was the influencial friend of Edward Winslow who spoke for him at the King's Council. With Robert Soule-Sole a contemporary of the father and Edward Winslow and George Soule contemporaries of the son, and with home areas in close proxirnity,thei~ familiarity with each other appears more conceivable. Edward \'linslow at Droitwich was a very close' neigh bor of Sir Edwin when he moved from the family home in Wickhamford (near Evesham) , to 'the·:-:tmm:·of Oinb~l:sl:ey ;. a ::.inila.: ·or.· ·so:::trom ' Dr6itirtch. Sir Edwin and h:is father,: the Bishop both were reared.'. in Wickhamford. There is a monument there to this illustrious family. The home at Ombersley remains today as a museum. The home George left was a gentle place, though there were at times violence in the country. This pleasant place with its beautiful trees and quiet vistas cou~ easily have helped form his character. A knowledge of growing things would have been intimate to him. George left those sights and sounds familiar to him in Eckington and Pershore. One wonders if, when he grew old in the forests of Duxbury, did he dream of those early days when he was young, and did he-: 'Wander-.again in his mind through the beautfful::ru:ins' of Pershore Abbey just up the road? An interesting note concerning the Sandys family and the changes and challenges of the day: From VEXED AND TROUBLED ENGLISHMEN, Bridenbaugh, Oxford University Press, 1968, Pg. 389. " At Knightsbridge on June 5, 1616, Sir George Sandys (poet and later treasuer of the Virginia Company) with Isaac Hawkins also a gentleman, assaulted Anthony Culverwell in the highway and robbed him of his cloak, 40 shillings, and his watch. They also attacked and robbed John Fox, a gentleman, and unassisted, Sir George stopped the dramatist, John Marston and took his horse and much clothing. Later he joined the ·two others in a forth assault. A Middlesex Court judged Hawkins who had no money to make restitution, guilty and ordered him to be hanged. Sandys was found not guilty. Curious about who she was, the writer did some rummaging through the archives of the North Kings~own area where West grew up, and made ~he acquaintance of three Ellener Browns who are pre- sented herewith. · 1. Ellner Brown: Third wife of Be~iah Brown, Elinor is identified in the Peirce Manuscripts of the R.I. Historical Society's Bates Collection. On page 95 , Part I, it is noted that on 12 March, 1716/1717, Elinor, widow of Beriah Brown, deceased, signed a receipt for compensation she had rece-ived from her son Alex- ander Brown , . heir to the said deceased, for all the household goods she brought to his father when she married him. 2 . Elinor Brown: ·· Wife of Charles Brown, the younger son of the above- mentioned Beriah Brown, is identified in several records of real estate transactions appearing in the same Peirce Manu scripts. "Charles Brown and wife Elinor to Benjamin Himes 52 acl.:'es Feb.J,l729/17JO'' is found on page 2)1. "1737 Charles Brown and wife Ellenor to Samuel Eldred" is found on page JJ8. ''-Charles Brown and wife .Ellenor t o son John Brown 20 acres" is found on page 390. This Ellenor Brown was still living when Charles Brown wrote his will in 1747. 3. Ellener Brown: Wife of Deputy Governor William .'lest, daughter of Charles and Ellenor Brown, grandaughter of Beriah Brown and step-grandaughter of Beriah's third wife Elinor, this l ady became the mother of twelve children born between 1752 and approximately 1782. She is identified through her father's will, which is on record in the North Kingstown town hall in Wickford, R.I., and which is summarized in the Peirce Manuscripts, Part III, page 1527. rhe North Kingstown r ecord is clear enough, but lacks some fragments at the very bottom of one page which must have contained just the information for w:dch we are looking. Charles, writing his will in 1747, makes due provision for his sons J ohn, Charles, Samuel and Alexander, then goes on to state "allso I give and bequ____ unto my Daughter Abigail One hundred pounds to be ______son Johnunto i n onemy Daughteryear afte______my Deceas______and ______" Here the page is entirely broken off, with the result that a line or two, in addition to the indicated lacunae , are missing. On the next page, once again legible, Charles or.cupies himself with provisions for his wife . The summary in the SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER VOLUME XVIII, No. 2 APRIL, 1984 69 Peirce Manuscripts fills in these gaps nicely with the conclu~ ding words, •daughter Abigail, son John, Ex.,and daughter Elinor West1 wife Ellinor.• The two sets of.archives from which the three Ellenor/ Ellinor/Elinor Browns emerge have some history of their own. The North Kingstown recrds have undergone not one, but two, fires. Some pag~s are entirely lost and others, scorched, have lost their brittler portions, especially at the edges. The first of these fires occurred 16 Dec.,l8?0, at the time of a robbery at the First National Bank at Wickford, where the records .. were temporarily stored. The second fire occurred 11 Dec.,1920, in the Town Hall, and is described in a report on file in the Town Council Records, Book 46a498. The Peirce Manuscrints form part of the collection which came to the Historical Society from Louise Prosser Bates, genealogist, and collector of records of many kinds, known to have been born in 185?· Some few facts about Beriah Brown may be of interest. He was born in Rowley, Mass.,8 July, 1648, eldest son of Charles and Mary (Acy) Brown. He married three timesa (1) In Rowley, Mass.,6 Jan.,l6?3/16?4, Sarah Harris, daughter of John Harris; one child, Sarah, baptized in Rowley 4 Nov.,l6??r Sarah the wife died, Sarah the daughter was assigned to her grandmother, and Beriah moved to North Kingstown. (2)In Kingstowne, R.I., 1685, Abigail Phenix, daughter of Alexander and Abigail (Sewall) Phenixr sons Alexander and Charles, and perhaps a daughter Mary, were born, and then Abigail diedr Charles, still an infant, went to live nearby with his ·grandmother Abigail Phenix, who later made him her heir. ())Elinor , the lady mentioned as going on record with a receipt for compensation from her step-son Alexander in consideration of the goods she had brought with her at the time of her marriage. In 1709, Beriah Brown and Francis West Jr. bought adjacent parcels of land from the Colony Agents, both parcels described as land on which they al ready dwelled. Francis West Jr. was the son of Francis West and Susanna Soule, Susannah being the daughter of Mayflower Passenger George Soule and his wife Mary, further~ he was the grandfather of William West the Deputy _Governor.
