Edwin Sandys or Sandes was born in the year 1519, near Havvkshead, in the part of Lancashire called Furness Fells. He was the third son of William Sandys, Esq. and Margaret his wife, a descendant of the ancient barons of Kendal. As Easthwaite Hall was the principal resi- dence of the father, it is probable that it was in this house that Edwin first saw the light. It is not certainly known at what seminary the future archbishop received the rudiments of his education : it has however been conjectured with some plausibility by a bio- grapher that, as the school of Furness Abbey was then highly distinguished, and as his family were feudatories of that house, he was a pupil of the monks. -

The first eight chapters were written in 1938-39. The outbreak of the war caused the removal of the writer to the Hawaiian Islands and brought about a temporary suspension. Work was resumed in 1943. The manuscript reached such proportions tha:t it seemed too large to publish in one volume. Seventeenth Century bulked too large and had too many pages. So it was decided to separate this work into -two or three volumes. The next one, which is nearly complete, will contain about seven hundred pages and will be entitled Colonial, Families of Surry "1/d Sussex. Many thanks are due to the Librarian of Newberry Library who granted the writer a shelf permit to roam at will through the book • stacks and also to Mr. Joseph Wolf, head of the Genealogical Depart ment, for their very great 11,Ssistance. There are no records at all of ordinations in the diocese for the reigns of Edward VI or Mary I but soon after Elizabeth's accession from 6 July 1561 lists of ordinations reappear in the York archiepiscopal registers. Archbishop Thomas Young normally held two general ordination ceremonies each year: then, after his death in 1568, Richard Barnes, suffi agan bishop of Nottingham, introduced the practice of officiating at a number of very small special ordination ceremonies, a procedure which Archbishop Edmund Grindal and his Elizabethan successors all favoured, perhaps because it made the close examination of candidates much easier. No record remains of any ordinations conducted by Edwin Sandys, archbishop between 1576 and 1588. When the registration of ordinations begins again with Archbishop John Piers in 1589 they no longer appear in the archiepiscopal registers but solely in the Institution Act Books. The thirty-first of the Canons of 1604 ordained that following the precedent of the ancient fathers of the church sacred orders should only be conferred on the Sundays following the ember days and so put an end to the frequent special ordinations the archbishops had preferred. -

Edwin Sandys and the Reform of English Religion This book examines the complexities of reformed religion in early-modern England, through an examination of the experiences of Edwin Sandys, a prominent member of the Elizabethan Church hierarchy. Sandys was an ardent evangelical in the Edwardian era forced into exile under Mary I, but on his return to England he became a leader of the Elizabethan Church. He was Bishop of Worcester and London and finally Archbishop of York. His transformation from Edwardian radical to a defender of the Elizabethan status quo illustrated the changing role of the Protestant hierarchy. His fight against Catholicism dominated much of his actions, but his irascible personality also saw him embroiled in numerous conflicts and left him needing to defend his own status. Sarah L.
