William (abt 1566 - 1644) was the son of William Brewster Sr. and Mary Smythe. William Brewster Sr. was Bailiff of the Archbishop of York's estate and Master of the Queen's Postes (postmaster), living at Scrooby Manor House in Nottingham, England, where royal guests were often entertained. William Jr. attended Cambridge University, noted for its radical, religious ideas. He spent several years in the service of Queen Elizabeth's representative in the Netherlands, a country known for its religious tolerance. When his father died in 1590, young William was appointed to take his place as 'Master of the Postes,' but his spiritual views were sympathetic to the Separatist movement and he began to attend John Smith's Separatists church at Gainsborough where he met William Bradford of Austerfield. When John Smith and his group emigrated to Holland seeking a more tolerant environment, Scrooby Manor House became the meeting place of the Separatists. In 1607, Brewster resigned his official position, but pressure from the authorities increased and Brewster fled to Holland himself. While there, Brewster taught at University while William Bradford found work as a weaver. Brewster published several Puritan pamphlets, which were smuggled to England and declared treasonous by the government of King James I. Brewster was forced into hiding. Intolerance had found its way to Holland. For the Separatists, Brewster and Bradford in particular, the idea of spreading their religious views to a whole New World began to take hold and in 1620, that idea became reality with the voyage on the Mayflower and the establishment of . William Brewster was selected to lead the expedition. He became the much loved and respected Reverend Elder of the Pilgrims' church in Plymouth and, in his early fifties, was the oldest of the Pilgrims to celebrate the First Thanksgiving. Very little is known of his wife Mary, including her maiden name. The couple had five surviving children: Jonathan, Patience, Love, Fear, and Wrestling. (Love and Wrestling were sons; Patience and Fear were daughters).

THE , 11 NOV 1620 The compact was an agreement signed by 41 of the male passengers of the Mayflower, just before going ashore, and called for a just system of government to be instituted in the new colony. The first listing of the compact's signers appeared in 1669 in "'s Memorial" by Nathaniel Generation 2 (con't) Morton, secretary to the Colony Court. Most historians believe the list does not represent the sequence of signing by the individuals, contending that it is highly unlikely, for example, that , a hired cooper, would have been invited to sign ahead of more esteemed members of the party such as or .

Mayflower BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY:

William Brewster was the Reverend Elder of the Pilgrim's church at Plymouth, since their pastor John Robinson remained behind in Leyden, Holland with the majority of the congregation which planned to come to America at a later time. Brewster was a fugitive from the King of England, because he had published a number of religious pamphlets while in Leyden which were critical or opposed the tenets of the . He had been a member of the Separatist church movement from its very beginning, and was the oldest Mayflower passenger to have participated at the First Thanksgiving, in his early fifties.

William Bradford wrote a lot about William Brewster in , some of which follows:

"After he had attained some learning, viz. the knowledge of Latin tongue, and some insight in the Greek, and spent some small time at Cambridge, and then being first seasoned with the seeds of grace and virtue, he went to the court, and served that religious and godly gentleman, Mr. Davison, divers years, when he was Secretary of State; who found him so discreet and faithful as he trusted him above all other that were about him, and only employed him in all matters of greatest trust and secrecy...heattended his mr. when he was sent in ambassage by the Queen into the Low Countries ...And,athisreturn,theStateshonored him with a gold chain, and his master committed it to him, and commanded him to wear it when they arrived in England, as they rid through the country, till they came to the court ...Afterwardshewentandlivedinthecountry, in good esteem amongst his friends and the gentlemen of those parts, especially the Godly and religious. He did much good in the country where he lived, in promoting and furthering religion not only by his practise and example, and provocating and encouraging of others, but by procuring of good preachers to the places thereabouts, and drawing on of others to assist and help forward in such work; he himself most commonly deepest in the charge, and sometimes above his ability. . . . They ordinarily met at this house on the Lord's day, (which was a manor of the bishops) and with great love he entertained them when they came, making provision for them to his great charge. He was the chief of those that were taken at Boston, and suffered the greatest loss; and of the seven that were kept longest in prison, and after bound over ...AfterhecameintoHollandhesuffered much hardship, after he had spent the most of his means, having a great charge, and many children; and, in regard of his former breeding and course of life, not so fit for many employments as others were, especially as were toilsome and laborious. But yet he ever bore his condition with much cheerfulness and contention. Towards the later part of those 12 years spent in Holland, his outward condition was mended, and he lived well and plentifully; for he fell into a way to teach many students, who had a desire to learn the English tongue, to teach them English;...Healso had means to set up printing, by the help of some friends . . . and by reason of many books which would not be allowed to be printed in England, they might have had more then they could do. . . . And besides that, he would labor with his hands in the fields as long as he was able; yet when the church had no other minister, he taught twice every Sabbath ...Forhispersonal abilities, he was qualified above many; he was wise and discreet and well spoken, having a grave and deliberate utterance, of a very cheerful spirit, very sociable and pleasant amongst his friends, of an humble and modest mind, of a peaceable disposition, undervaluing himself and his own abilities . . . inoffensive and innocent in his life and conversation ...hewastender-hearted, and compassionate of such as were in misery, but especially of such as had been of good estate and rank, and were fallen into want and poverty, either for goodness and religions sake, or by the injury and oppression of others;..." NOTE ON William BREWSTER'S WIFE: The maiden name of William Brewster's wife has not been proven. The claim it was Mary Wentworth rests solely on the fact that Mary Wentworth happened to live somewhat close to William Brewster in Scrooby, Nottingham. That is very shaky evidence to say the least. Further, it has been proposed that William Brewster may have married Mary Wyrall, but the evidence is just as flimsy for that marriage. There are no fewer than seven marriages from 1590-1610 that have been located in parish registers showing a William Brewster marrying a Mary. All, however, have been satisfactorily eliminated as probable candidates for the William and Mary (Brewster) who Generation 3 (con't) yp y() came on the Mayflower. So at present, there is no evidence to document who William Brewster's wife Mary actually was.

Notes for Richard Harrison: Obituary transcribed from "The Oasis" Saturday, March 27, 1909 The Passing of a Pioneer In the death at Tuscon, on Thursday of last week, of Judge Richard Harrison, Santa Cruz county lost it's oldest citizen and the Pacific Coast a pioneer who contributed in no small way to the making of history in the great West. Judge Harrison was one of the Argonauts and a man whose career was fringed with all the interesting experiences of those early travelers to the golden shores overlooking the radiant sunset. He crossed the plains in an Ox wagon in 1849, when 23 years of age. Judge Harrison was born in Virginia 83 years ago. After graduation he was admitted to the bar as an attorney and started for the West. At St. Joseph, Mo., in 1849, he joined a caravan and went to California. There he mined for a while and then traveled extensively over Oregon, Washington, and Nevada; subsequently returning to California. He married Miss Mary Wilson in San Francisco and then went to Mendocino County, where he held for several years the office of county judge. This was along in the '70s. In 1879 he came to Arizona, first going to Tucson and then to Harshaw and Washington Camp, where he followed mining, ranching and hotel keeping. About 1882 he located a Lochiel where he devoted himself for the most part, to cattle raising. He always took a lively interest in politics and was regarded for many years as a democratic leader in this part of the territory. At Lochiel he was for many years a justice of the peace and in 1889 was appointed by Gov. Zulick one of the regents of the Territorial University. He leaves, beside his sorrow-stricken widow, who was for so many years his devoted companion and helpmate, three daughters and two sons: Mrs. D.G. Chalmers, Hon. James A. Harrison, Charles Harrison, Mrs. Thomas Falvey and Mrs. C.W. Harter, all residents of Santa Cruz county. Two sons and one daughter Mrs. Nellie Hathaway-Haynes, are dead, and all were buried in this county. A brother, Dr. William Dorsey Harrison, who joined him at Harshaw, died at that place many years ago and was buried at Duquesne. Judge Harrison came of a prominent family in Virginia, many whom aided in making history in anti-bellum days. His father, long before the Civil War, was a chaplain in the United States Navy, and other members became conspicuous as naval officers. One brother, Prof. James F. Harrison, was for many years as the head of the University of Virginia. The funeral took place in Nogales Sunday afternoon, and was largely attended by people in the city and from other parts of the country.

Notes for Richard W. Harrison: RICHARD HARRISON Arizona Republican Newspaper March 30, 1905

Jerry Sheehy was convicted and is serving time in Yuma for the killing of his best friend Richard Harrison in Santa Cruz County. Among the grounds on which an appeal in the Sheehy case was based was the admission by the trial court of a statement by Harrison after the shooting which he called attention to the fact that he was not armed when Sheehy shot him. It could not be regarded as a dying statement and it was close to the borderline of hearsay testimony but the court held that in any event it was insufficient for a reversal of the case.

Richard Harrison Arizona Republican Newspaper January 18, 1904

A fatality seems to be attending the well known Harrison family of Washington Camp, Santa Cruz County. Richard Harrison, the son of Judge Harrison, and a brother in law of Hon. D.G. Chalmers, the Speaker of the House of the Nineteenth Legislature, who was killed by Jerry Sheehy last Friday near Washington camp, is the second son of that family to meet a violent death in the same locality within two years. Generation 11 (con't)

A little less than two years ago an older son was killed at Washington by a man by the name of Morgan, who is now serving twenty years at Yuma.

The facts of the killing last Friday are not all known yet. It is reported that it was the culminating incident in a quarrel about some cattle. There is a suspicion though that there was some other cause. Harrison and Sheehy had for several years been running mates. They had been particularly chummy and taken part in several escapades and in one affair that could not be called an escapade. It was an assault one day on Hon. Colin Cameron whom they met on the range at Lochiel. They dismounted from their horses and pulling Mr. Cameron from his horse beat him almost into insensibility.

The case was taken into a U.S. court and after a stubborn trial they were acquitted. Richard Harrison was the youngest member of the Harrison family.
