Torrance, to carry out a fresh examination of the Doctrine of Baptism, in order to lead the Church to theological agreement and uniform practice. The Commission had emerged after years of disagreement related to the meaning of baptism and its administration, especially in light of infant baptism. What followed was seven years of Interim Reports and the production of a Biblical Doctrine of Baptism. Since then, Act XVII (1963) pertaining to Baptism has been revisited on several occasions. It is the contention of this thesis that Torrance greatly influenced the work of the Commission and shaped substantially the doctrine that emerged. The result was an understanding of baptism that whilst rooted in the Reformed tradition, departed from it. By suggesting that baptisma was closely aligned to Christ’s vicarious death, and that the sanctifying nature of the incarnation was the primary justification for the baptism of infants, a different trajectory was proposed. This created a tension between two differing paradigms, one that led to discriminate baptism and another, that could have led to indiscriminate baptism. The result was confusion in the General Assembly, and failure to unify doctrine and practice. In light of this, this thesis will explore the baptismal theology of Thomas F. Torrance. It will then examine the reports of the Special Commission, the minutes of their meetings, and the verbatim minutes of the General Assembly during that period, in order to establish Torrance’s influence upon the Commission and the reception of the reports within the church. Identifying that the main areas of tension lay in sacramental and covenantal theology, it will then offer an overview of both the Reformed tradition and the Special Commission to see points of agreement and disagreement, in order to assess the extent to which the Special Commission departed from Reformed principles. Finally, it will explore the influence of the Special Commission’s work on the Church of Scotland since 1963, highlighting the watershed in baptismal theology that occurred in 2003, with the acknowledgement that believers’ baptism, and not infant baptism, was the theological norm. 2 3 Table of Contents Abstract 2 Acknowledgement 5 Author’s Declaration 6 Introduction 7 Chapter One – Thomas F. Ruth H B Morrison 6 Introduction I did not set off with the intention of writing about baptism. I had begun by exploring the question of soteriology, asking not so much why have we been saved, but rather, what have we been saved for? It did not take me too long to discover that my research topic would have to be much more focussed, and so, having highlighted the theme of hope, and having always had an interest in sacramental theology, I began to read about eschatology. This included: Surprised by Hope by Tom Wright, What Dare We Hope? By Gerhard Sauter, The God of Hope and the End of the World by John Polkinghore, Hope against Hope: Christian Eschatology in Contemporary Context by Richard Bauckham and Trevor Hart, The Christian Hope by Brian Hebblethwaite, What are we waiting for? Christian Hope and Contemporary Culture edited by Stephen Holmes and Russell Rook, Eschatology and Hope by Anthony Kelly and Eucharist and Eschatology by Geoffrey Wainwright. What emerged was the realisation that whilst a great deal had been written about the relationship between the eschatological feast of heaven and the Lord’s Supper, very little research had been undertaken in relation to the connection between baptism and eschatology. This surprised me. As my research developed, I realised that the historical elements and discussions of baptismal practice had been well researched. This conclusion was reached after reading many books, not least: Baptism in the Early Church by Everett Ferguson, Early and Medieval Rituals and Theologies of Baptism and Reformation and Modern Rituals and Theologies of Baptism by Bryan Spinks, The Rites of Christian Initiation by Maxwell Johnson, Early Christian Baptism and Catechumenate: Italy, North Africa, and Egypt and Early Christian Baptism and Catechumenate: West and East Syria by Thomas Finn, and most recently, the monumental work, Ablution, Initiation, and Baptism, edited by David Hellholm, Tor Vegge, Øyvind Norderval and Christer Hellhom. Acknowledging that a broad historical overview was not going to be fruitful, I began to consider my work as a parish minister and reckoned that questions relating to the doctrine and practice of baptism within the Church of Scotland might prove interesting. After reading the chapter “Baptismal Theology and Practice in the Church of Scotland” by Paul Nimmo, in Worship and Liturgy in Context (edited by Duncan Forrester and Doug Gay), I suspected that no in depth or systematic study of the work of the Special Commission on Baptism, which met in the 1950s, had ever been undertaken. Indeed, as I began to explore the archives in Edinburgh University and the reports of the various Boards and Committee’s of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, I realised 7 that the theological waters of baptism were extremely muddy, and an exploration of the baptismal theology of the Church of Scotland, centred on the Special Commission, might prove worthwhile.

Torrance Kate Helen Dugdale Submitted to fulfil the requirements for a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Otago, November 2016. 1 2 ABSTRACT This thesis argues that rather than focusing on the Church as an institution, social grouping, or volunteer society, the study of ecclesiology must begin with a robust investigation of the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Utilising the work of Thomas F. Torrance, it proposes that the Church is to be understood as an empirical community in space and time that is primarily shaped by the perichoretic communion of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, revealed by the economic work of the Son and the Spirit. The Church’s historical existence is thus subordinate to the Church’s relation to the Triune God, which is why the doctrine of the Trinity is assigned a regulative influence in Torrance’s work. This does not exclude the essential nature of other doctrines, but gives pre-eminence to the doctrine of the Trinity as the foundational article for ecclesiology. The methodology of this thesis is one of constructive analysis, involving a critical and constructive appreciation of Torrance’s work, and then exploring how further dialogue with Torrance’s work can be fruitfully undertaken. Part A (Chapters 1-5) focuses on the theological architectonics of Torrance’s ecclesiology, emphasising that the doctrine of the Trinity has precedence over ecclesiology. While the doctrine of the Church is the immediate object of our consideration, we cannot begin by considering the Church as a spatiotemporal institution, but rather must look ‘through the Church’ to find its dimension of depth, which is the Holy Trinity.

Cheyne July 1996 New College, Edinburgh 1846 - 1996 It is never easy to define the essential characteristics of a great and long-established institution. In the case of New College, which has not only survived the changes and chances of over one and a half centuries but displayed throughout that time a vigorous and varied intellectual life, the task is particularly daunting. It seems likely, however, that the subject can be fruitfully approached by recounting – with all possible conciseness! – the history of the place from its beginnings down to the present day, in the hope that at least some of its enduring concerns and achievements may thereby be discovered. That, at any rate, is what will be attempted in the following paper. The history of New College would seem to fall into two clearly distinguishable epochs, divided from each other by twentieth-century Scotland's most important ecclesiastical event: the Union in 1929 of the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland. That Union led, among other things, to the merger of New College (till then a basically denominational seminary, though of remarkably catholic sympathies and unusually ambitious intellectual pretensions) with the University of Edinburgh's Faculty of Divinity, and so ushered in the era in which we still live. Rarely are they devoted to individuals unless they are venerable church "fathers" such as Luther or Calvin. The only exceptions have been a special iss ue dedicated to a retiring professor from Western Seminary and an issue on contemporary Dutch theology with a focus on the theology of the late A. A. Van Ruler (Winter, 1973). T his iss ue represents another exception·, for it is devoted to a living theolo­ gian, the Rev. Dr. Thomas F.     New College Bulletin 2009 Theology in the Public Square in Post-Devolution Scotland This is the title of a two-year research programme in the Centre for Theology and Public Issues, funded by the Binks Trust and headed by Rev Dr Graham K. Blount, who for the previous 10 years was the Scottish Churches Parliament Officer. Dr Blount writes: This project aims to resource the Christian Churches in Scotland by providing focused research in the area of Public Theology. In practice, it will have two main strands: • to review and reflect upon the perspectives and strategies of Christian engagement in Scottish public debate since devolution; and • to identify, in consultation with the churches, policy areas where there is need for theological resourcing and to develop – in partnership with the churches and others – theological perspectives on the issues. The challenge is to show the added value which a theological perspective can bring to discussion of public issues. I believe that the move towards more holistic approaches to problems and issues opens up the possibilities of new dimensions in the debate – including a theological dimension – which will resonate widely. Both strands of the project are well under way.
