Christian Spiritual Formation
Christian Spiritual Formation Wilson Teo Regent University The term spiritual formation has been used in many Christian contexts given its recent popularity and yet this term can carry different meanings in these various contexts. The history of this word is traced to Roman Catholicism, and yet it has a different meaning within the Christian evangelical world. This literature review will focus on the various dimensions of spiritual formation such as its definitions, the underpinning theological foundation, the formational elements and the desired outcomes. The paper will also suggest the possible gaps that will require further attention so that the concept of spiritual formation is beneficial to the formation of the Body of Christ. Spiritual Formation has gained much interest and attention in the last two decades. It has been a popular title in many publications and a frequently used term in Christian conferences. The popularity and demand for spiritual formation resources have led to the establishment of spiritual formation institutions to meet the growing requests for teaching and training in this area. Some of these institutions are set up by well-known authors and scholars such as Dallas Willard Center for Christian Spiritual Formation and the Renovare Institute for Christian Formation. The interest for spiritual formation has gone beyond pastors and believers in local churches to the academic sphere where graduate institutions have partnered with the Renovare Institute to recognize spiritual formation modules as part of their postgraduate level programs (Renovare, n.d.). These highly recognized academic institutions’ engagements in spiritual formation reinforced its current importance and value to the Body of Christ, especially for ecclesial leaders. -

John Wesley – Practical Theologian?

Kenneth Grider1 When one reads secondary treatments of Wesley they repeatedly come across disclaimers of him being a “systematic” theologian. If an alternative characterization is listed, among the more common is “practical” theologian. One of our goals in this paper is to demonstrate the warrant for such a construal of Wesley as a practical theologian. A more important goal is to overcome prevalent caricatures of what this entails. For example, it often appears that classification of Wesley as a practical theologian is intended to imply that he “dabbles” in theology when it fits his pastoral or evangelistic purposes but does not take doctrinal reflection seriously. We hope to demonstrate that this and related implications are distortions of Wesley’s practical theology. To make this case we must place Wesley’s practical theology in its historical context. Until recently, such a contextual consideration has not only been lacking but almost impossible. Given the dominance, in the modern era, of the Western university model of Systematic Theology—with its accompanying application-discipline of Practical Theology, earlier understandings of “practical theology” were largely forgotten or distorted. However, this reigning model of Practical Theology is being called into question in recent discussions of theological methodology. These discussions have spurred historical investigation into earlier understandings of “practical theology.” They have also spawned calls for reformulating Practical Theology and, perhaps, returning to a model of theology per se as a practical endeavour. -

The Trinitarian Ecclesiology of Thomas F. Torrance Kate Helen Dugdale Submitted to fulfil the requirements for a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Otago, November 2016. 1 2 ABSTRACT This thesis argues that rather than focusing on the Church as an institution, social grouping, or volunteer society, the study of ecclesiology must begin with a robust investigation of the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Utilising the work of Thomas F. Torrance, it proposes that the Church is to be understood as an empirical community in space and time that is primarily shaped by the perichoretic communion of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, revealed by the economic work of the Son and the Spirit. The Church’s historical existence is thus subordinate to the Church’s relation to the Triune God, which is why the doctrine of the Trinity is assigned a regulative influence in Torrance’s work. This does not exclude the essential nature of other doctrines, but gives pre-eminence to the doctrine of the Trinity as the foundational article for ecclesiology. The methodology of this thesis is one of constructive analysis, involving a critical and constructive appreciation of Torrance’s work, and then exploring how further dialogue with Torrance’s work can be fruitfully undertaken. Part A (Chapters 1-5) focuses on the theological architectonics of Torrance’s ecclesiology, emphasising that the doctrine of the Trinity has precedence over ecclesiology. While the doctrine of the Church is the immediate object of our consideration, we cannot begin by considering the Church as a spatiotemporal institution, but rather must look ‘through the Church’ to find its dimension of depth, which is the Holy Trinity. -

VAN WYK University of South Africa Pretoria, Republic of South Africa This article, which places its emphasis on "practical theology" rather than "applied theology," was prompted by my experience in observing a considerable amount of-sermon delivery in both South Africa and North America. Although my focus is directed mainly toward concerns and developments (the "cutting edges," as it were) in the South African scene, the data which I present should have significance and application also in North America and elsewhere, where gospel preaching is an important element in the religio- sociological structure. 1. Introduction and Orientation Terminology In my use of the term "practical theology" rather than "applied theology," or even, to some extent, "pastoral theology," I am making a conscious and definite distinction between practical theology as a science and the training and technical equipping of pastors for the gospel ministry. For the best results, a proper understanding and use of the latter should-perhaps, must-be undergirded by the former. At this juncture I should make evident my definitions of "method" and "methodology," two terms that are frequently confused with each other (and thus wrongly used). By and large, a "method" refers to the way or the procedure by which certain aims and objectives are attained. "Methodology," on the other hand, denotes the scientific study of methods or procedures undertaken in the cause of research. Objectives In preparing this article 1 have had several objectives or goals in mind. -

The thesis will also consider the foundation upon which these eras are built and see what they have in common and what sets them apart. The eras have humanism in common, but conformism (or standardization) and pluralism separate them. Through the dualism of Greek philosophy and the fall story of the Old Testament, I will show the origins of conformism and pluralism and propose a path to overcome them. I will discuss how, as Christianity comes across Greek dualism, the field of practical theology and theological practice has trended toward prioritizing theoria over praxis. In the tradition of Hebrew beliefs and the good news of Jesus Christ, practice and life are one, and I will emphasize that if one was to be prioritized, it should be practice. Life in the early Churches, which began through Jesus Christ and his disciples, was based on the practice of the Triune God's love through the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Hence, a newly reflected paradigm based on the threefold love of Trinity is required in the postmodern era. Practical Theology as Theology of Religion Schleiermacher’s Understanding of Practical Theology as a Discipline Wilhelm Gräb Friedrich Schleiermacher is the founding father of practical theology as one of the disciplines of theological studies. To understand this, one has to consider his broader concept of theology and his understandings of religion and of Christianity. We will therefore discuss all of these matters in this essay, and will do so especially in regard to Schleiermacher’s Brief Outline of Theology as a Field of Study.1 The thesis is that Schleierma- cher , understanding practical theology as a technical discipline, overcame tendencies to form practical theology as a type of applied science. In his construction of theology, Schleiermacher conceived the entirety of theol- ogy as a practical science. Within that larger context, practical theology involves refl ection particularly on rules of Church leadership, but is based upon a larger theory of Christianity within modern society and is devel- oped in cooperation with all other theological disciplines. 1. Practical Theology in the Context of Theological Disciplines In the Brief Outline of Theology as a Field of Study, Schleiermacher drafts a theological encyclopedia in which practical theology, in the full sense of the word, belongs to the “cohesive whole” of theology as a science.2 This marked the beginning of a new theological discipline. Proceeds from the sale will be split between the Church and the Archive Group 2 3 This year (1946) we celebrate the Centenary of the Langholm (Old) Parish Church, and at such a unique time in its history it is perhaps not unbefitting for us to recall to memory its long associations and traditions. Indeed one doubts whether there exists anywhere in the Scottish Borders a Parish and Auld Kirk whose annals tell a story, more romantic, more religious, more historic, or more compelling, than do those of the Parish and Auld Kirk of Langholm. EARLY HISTORY. Even before the coming of Christianity to the Scottish Borders, the people were being subjected to constant turmoil and fighting with little rest or peace, and this state of affairs continued until the 1745 rebellion. The first to make its appearance was the Roman invasion and this was followed by the Saxon and Danish invasions. These were followed by the Wars of Independence when Scotland struggled for national existence.
