You would think that those two words would put a damper on the efforts of over thirty members of 51 Aerospace Control & Warning (Operational Training) Squadron (51 AC&W (OT) Sqn) during the 22 Wing Cares roadside stop held on Wednesday, December 11th, however, nothing could be farther from the truth! “Everyone loves to come out to support this initiative,” explains Major Andrew Lunn, Commanding Officer of 51 AC&W (OT) Sqn. With a full complement of instructors, students and staff in attendance – and even Santa - asking motorists to give generously to the North Bay Food Bank, they collected $2690.23 in donations and 1330 lbs of food for a total of 4020 lbs of food (1 dollar = 1 lb of food). The brain child of Tom Hedican, international renowned hockey coach, 51 AC&W (OT) Sqn’s Honorary Colonel emeritus and creator of Coach4Food in 2008, the program is now under the banner of My Team Cares and coordinated by Debbie and Heath Marson. 2019 marks the ninth year that 22 Wing has, once again, stepped up to support those in greatest need, showing North Bay how much we care. • Circumpolar Military Facilities of the Arctic Five
CIRCUMPOLAR MILITARY FACILITIES OF THE ARCTIC FIVE Ernie Regehr, O.C. Senior Fellow in Arctic Security The Simons Foundation Last updated: April 2, 2013 Introduction In 2011 the Canadian Senate Committee on Security and Defence, in its interim report on Arctic sovereignty and security, asked this question: “Is the region again becoming militarized?”1 It is that question that prompts the following compilation of current military facilities in the circumpolar region. The current list is confined to the five Arctic Ocean states, but the intention is to expand it to include all the states of the Arctic Council. A simple listing of military bases, facilities, and equipment, either based or available for deployment in the Arctic Region, does not itself answer the question of militarization, but the listing is intended to contribute to the informed consideration of it, and to informed assessments of the likely security implications of particular military procurement programs and developments. The objective is to aid efforts toward a better understanding of the extent and nature of current and planned military capacity in the Arctic. A later paper will address the “militarization” question more directly. What follows relies on a broad range of media, governmental, academic, and research centre sources, all of which are indicated in the footnotes. Of particular value and importance have been and are the following: Rob Huebert, “The Newly Emerging Arctic Security Environment,” March 2010, Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute. http://www.cdfai.org/PDF/The%20Newly%20Emerging%20Arctic%20Security%20Environment.pdf. • Canada Aviation Museum Exhibit
CANADA AVIATION MUSEUM EXHIBIT DE HAVILLAND CANADA CS2F / CP-121 TRACKER RCN / CAF SERIAL 1587 / 12187 IN THE ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY Introduction The predecessor to the Canadian CS2F Tracker, the S2F, was conceived in 1950 by the Grumman Aircraft Company in response to a United States Navy (USN) Bureau of Aeronautics requirement for a twin engine, carrier-borne Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) aircraft. An interesting stipulation in the original (USN) specifications was that the aircraft must be small enough, with the wings folded, to operate from a relatively small CVE-105 (USN) class aircraft carrier. These smaller aircraft carriers were normally equipped with aircraft elevators located inboard on the flight deck centerline, one forward and the other aft. The dimensions of these elevators governed the size of aircraft that could be moved up and down from the hangar deck below. This elevator configuration and the respective dimensions were almost identical to those of the British built Majestic class aircraft carriers of which the Canadian aircraft carrier Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Bonaventure was a derivative. This design feature was probably the single most important reason for selecting this aircraft for use in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). A formation of four Royal Canadian Navy CS2F-2 Trackers of VS 880 assigned to HMCS Bonaventure. (Bill Upton Collection) Cover Photo Caption: CS2F-3 Tracker, RCN serial 1587 of VS 880, prepares to trap aboard HMCS Bonaventure (CVL 22) during exercises in 1968. Sadly the Royal Canadian Navy ceased to exist in February of that year with the forced integration of all services into the newly designated Canadian Armed Forces, and the CS2F became the CP-121.
