  • Big-Hearted BT Staff Pitching in to Take Soccer Aid Calls in Cardiff
Jun 01, 2018 10:07 BST Big-hearted BT staff pitching in to take Soccer Aid calls in Cardiff If you’re planning to donate money to Soccer Aid on Sunday June 10, there’s a sporting chance your call might be answered in Cardiff. That’s because around 90 big-hearted BT and EE staff from south Wales are turning their offices in Stadium House, Cardiffinto a Soccer Aid pledge centre for the evening. They will be giving up their free time to answer calls whilst two star-studded teams – Robbie’s England and Usain Bolt’s World XI - battle it out at Manchester’s Old Trafford stadium. The teams this year will include Dan Carter, Michael Owen, Gordon Ramsay and Mo Farrah. All public donations to Soccer Aid will support charity Unicef's work protecting children in the UK and globally. An incredible £24 million has already been raised through the event over the last 10 years. The Government has promised to match every donation – and so double the total sum raised. In 2006, pop star Robbie Williams, who is a Unicef UK Ambassador, and his best mate Jonathan Wilkes came up with the idea of Soccer Aid. Robbie has captained the England team ever since. BT’s Kit Evans, who is helping to co-ordinate activities at the Cardiff contact centre, said: “The excitement around the office is building as we get closer to the big match. It’s great that so many employees from different parts of the company have given up their own time to get involved.

  • Soccer Aid England Vs the Rest of the World
Read and listen. Soccer Aid England vs the Rest of the World Charity in the UK has a long history – Elizabeth I’s Charitable Uses Act was passed in 1601 to specify what money given to charity could be used for. Nowadays more than 166,000 ‘main’ charities are listed on the Charity Commission register in the UK. An exciting charity event in the UK is Soccer Aid, which was first held in May 2006 to raise money for the children’s charity UNICEF. UNICEF helps children in over 150 countries through emergency work and long-term development. Soccer Aid was a week of football ending with an exciting live final, in which England was represented by one squad and the Rest of the World by another. Every night for a week the celebrities and World Cup legends were followed in their training by a TV programme, while they battled to win places in the teams for the final. The England squad was managed by ex-England national football team manager Terry Venables, the Rest of the World squad was coached by ex-Chelsea manager Ruud Gullit, and the players included famous faces like Formula 1 driver Eddie Irvine, singer Robbie Williams, runner Ben Johnson and footballers Diego Maradona and Gianfranco Zola, to name just a few. At the end of the week the best players were chosen for the final by the manager of each squad.
