YAGP National Brochure 2015-2016 www.yagp.org 646.791.9500 GENNADI LARISSA Welcome to the SAVELIEV SAVELIEV President Artistic Director 2016 Season and Founder and Founder EAR FRIENDS, WELCOME TO THE 17TH SEASON OF YOUTH AMERICA GRAND PRIX! This season is dedicated to the loving memory of Shelley King – who, as D YAGP’s Director of Operations for the past 12 years, has changed countless young artists’ lives by helping them realize their dreams of becoming professional dancers. As we continue to honor Shelley’s dedication and passionate love for dance, we ask that you join us in celebrating her indomitable spirit. We would like to introduce two newest members of our team who will be in charge of registration - Billie Buddenhagen and Justin Sebesta. As a former General Manager of Ballet Austin, Billie brings a wealth of professional experience to our organization – and, as a ballet mom herself, she has a thorough understanding of the perspective of participants, parents and teachers. She joins YAGP as Regional Director, with Justin as Regional Manager. As the world’s largest student ballet scholarship competition, YAGP constantly works to expand its global network of dance. This year, we are thrilled to announce two new semi-final locations: Beijing, People’s Republic of China and Salt Lake City in the United States. We hope that this will create greater access for more talented young dance artists to participate in YAGP’s education and performance opportunities. In an effort to make the NYC Finals experience more convenient and economical for participants and their families, we have chosen a new venue for the Finals and Gala: the Howard Gilman Opera House at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. As America’s oldest performing arts institution, it has a rich history of presenting venerable dance institutions like ABT, Mariinsky Ballet and many others – and is conveniently located within walking distance of the modern and spacious Mark Morris Dance Studios, where master classes will be held. We hope you will find these changes as exciting as we do – and look forward to seeing you in the upcoming season! Ottawa dance fans are the luckiest in the country. Once again, NAC dance producer Cathy Levy has put together four sterling series ranging from traditional ballet to avant-garde experimentation, along with two special presentations. Just check out the statistics – 20 companies from nine countries, seven of which are presenting works not seen in Canada before. Three companies are exclusive Canadian engagements (Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Pennsylvania Ballet and Public in private/Clément Layes. “I love everything I bring,” says Levy. The ballet series consists of three full-length works (the National Ballet of Canada’s Swan Lake, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens’ Rodin/Claudel and the Pennsylvania Ballet’s Coppélia), all supported by live music performed by the NAC Orchestra. Levy is particularly happy about having Les Grands Ballets Canadiens back in the ballet series. Choreographer Peter Quanz’s Rodin/Claudel marks a return by the company to more traditional ballet technique and a classical-music score. In past years, Les Grands Ballets, long a proponent of off-point, edgy contemporary ballet, has appeared in contemporary dance Series A.

Dear Northrop Dance Lovers, Northrop at the University of Minnesota Presents We are thrilled to present The Hong Kong Ballet in their first Northrop appearance. The company is celebrating their 35th anniversary this year, and we join them in celebration of this milestone. In a rare treat for lovers of ballet, and lovers of beautiful music, Hong Kong Ballet has commissioned acclaimed Australian choreographer Natalie Weir to create a dramatic and romantic story ballet from Puccini’s famous opera, Turandot. Weir’s exquisite partnering work and signature dance vocabulary is the perfect choice to bring this story of love and sacrifice to vibrant life. A passionate tale of ancestral revenge and the transformative power of love, Turandot follows the story of Prince Calàf who gambles his life on the chance to win the love of ice-cold Artistic Director MADELEINE ONNE Christine Tschida. Photo by Patrick O'Leary, Princess Turandot. The princess, whose beauty draws suitors University of Minnesota. from far and wide, makes each hopeful petitioner answer Senior Ballet Master LIANG JING three riddles. But this is no parlor game: Those who answer incorrectly pay with their lives. Ballet Mistress TANG MIN Weir set the ballet to Giacomo Puccini’s lush and beautiful original score that audiences will instantly recognize. Puccini (known for such masterworks as Madame Butterfly and La Bohème) left Turandot Executive Director PAUL TAM unfinished when he died, but composer and pianist Franco Alfano finished it a couple years later.
