Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Dancers Know How to Soar Beyond “Canada’s oldest ballet company looks new all over again” -Dance International “Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s dancers know how to soar beyond the footlights.” -Toronto Star “The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is one of the most accomplished and appealing ballet companies in the world.” -Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival “It’s hard to beat this kind of pedigree, and the Royal Winnipeg (Ballet) never fails to deliver a balance of technical virtuosity, lyricism, and artistry.” -The Advocate Weekly CANADA’S ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET A leading cultural institution, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet has earned a national and international reputation for its impassioned artistry and technical virtuosity, and has received widespread critical acclaim for extraordinary performances of diverse classical and contemporary repertoires. Founded in 1939, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet holds the distinction of being the first and only ballet company in North America to hold the “Royal” designation and is also one of the oldest ballet companies on the continent. In 1953, RWB received its royal title, the first granted under the reign of Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet first began to tour Canada in 1945; it completed its first American tour in 1954. In 1975, the RWB toured Israel and was the first Canadian ballet to visit the country. For its 70th anniversary, the RWB returned to Israel and was greeted by audiences in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa with resounding accolades. In 2014, RWB toured China as part of its 75th Anniversary Season. The RWB spends anywhere from five to 20 weeks a year on the road, performing in centres large and small. The RWB has performed in the United States, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and in every Canadian province. Over time, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet has expanded its repertoire to include bold, innovative new works that embody creative excellence and engage audiences in an ongoing commitment to the vitality of this unique art form. Ballets such as The Handmaid’s Tale based on the novel by Margaret Atwood, Dracula, Nutcracker, Moulin Rouge® –The Ballet and Going Home Star – A Story of Truth and Reconciliation are great examples of the fine balance between the classical traditions and the boldness of contemporary ballet, which in turn has given this ensemble of artists a unique style. Now after 77 years, the energy and exuberance of its versatile dancers are Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s enduring signature. ANDRÉ LEWIS, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR André Lewis has spent the majority of his career with Canada’s first professional dance company, accepting the position of Artistic Director in 1996. Since then, Lewis has been the driving force behind the new and innovative works that have dramatically rejuvenated the Company’s repertoire. Most recently, Lewis has stepped into the Executive Director role at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Lewis has commissioned numerous blockbuster ballets such as Mark Godden’s Dracula in 1998, Jorden Morris’ critically acclaimed Peter Pan in 2006 and Jorden Morris’ Moulin Rouge ® - The Ballet in 2009. He was instrumental in the 1999 creation of a new Nutcracker for the Company and in 2012, Lewis and Atlanta Ballet Artistic Director John McFall co- commissioned a new creation by celebrated choreographer Twyla Tharp’s The Princess and the Goblin. In 2013, Lewis commissioned another outstanding new creation in conjunction with New York choreographer Lila York. The full-length ballet The Handmaid’s Tale was a bold adaptation of the novel of the same name by Governor General Award-winning Canadian author, Margaret Atwood. In 2014 for the RWB’s 75th anniversary season, Lewis commissioned choreographer Mark Godden to create the groundbreaking work Going Home Star – Truth and Reconciliation representing the many stories, both told and untold, of Indian Residential School Survivors and their families. This commissioned piece, which coincided with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, received national critical acclaim and is based on a story by Canadian author Joseph Boyden. Lewis has staged Rudi van Dantzig’s production of Romeo and Juliet in Italy, Greece, France and in 2015 for the Hong Kong Ballet. He has been a judge for the Varna International Ballet Competition, USA International Ballet Competition, and the Youth American Grand Prix. Further underscoring Lewis’ passion for dance are his multiple appearances at the Rural Retreat for International Dance Leaders, held in England. His work has been recognized through receiving both the Governor General’s Meritorious Award and the Jubilee Medal, as well as being featured in the television series: Chaucun Sa Route. In addition to his position as artistic director, Lewis is a sought-after ballet instructor and has guest taught throughout Europe and Japan. • Monetary Policy Oversight in Comparative Perspective: Britain and America During the Financial Crisis
Political Science and Political Economy Working Paper Department of Government London School of Economics No. 3/2014 Monetary Policy Oversight in Comparative Perspective: Britain and America during the Financial Crisis Cheryl Schonhardt-Bailey (LSE) Monetary Policy Oversight in Comparative Perspective: Britain and America During the Financial Crisis Cheryl Schonhardt-Bailey Government Department London School of Economics and Political Science Houghton Street London WC2A 2AE [email protected] http://personal.lse.ac.uk/schonhar/ This study examines deliberation on monetary policy oversight in the US and UK between 2006 and 2009. It employs reciprocity as the key criterion for judging the quality of monetary policy oversight deliberation (i.e., committee participants are expected to engage with one another, taking up and responding to the reasons offered by other participants). Using automated content analysis, the empirical finding is that reciprocity is clearly evident in the parliamentary oversight committee, but much less so in the two congressional committees. The two country cases represent very different approaches to legislative oversight, with the UK demonstrating a committee approach both in terms of the testimony of the monetary policy body and of the behaviour of the legislative committee, while the US demonstrates a focus on a series of individual contributions both from the Fed chairman and Members of Congress. In the US, this appears to allow greater scope to divert discussion away from the primary focus of hearings (i.e., monetary policy). 1 I. Introduction In normal economic times, clashes between politicians and central bankers in legislative oversight hearings on monetary policy are not typically considered worthy of headline news coverage.

  • Falls Around Her
Baswewe Films and The Film Farm Present FALLS AROUND HER Starring Tantoo Cardinal Written and Directed by Darlene Naponse PRESS KIT SYNOPSIS Falls Around Her follows Mary Birchbark (Tantoo Cardinal), a legendary singer who returns to the vast wilderness of her reserve to reconnect with the land and her community. Mary begins to sense that someone might be watching her. Unsure of what is real and what is imagined, Mary embraces isolation as she explores the psychological impact of her past and present. PRODUCTION NOTES Work and Walk in a Good Way Honour the Seven Grandfathers teachings: Honesty – Wisdom – Respect – Bravery – Humility – Truth – Love Those words and several others would accompany Falls Around Her’s first callsheet and would be included in every callsheet during the shoot. For the Anishinaabe people, the Teachings of the Seven Grandfathers is a set of teachings on human conduct toward others. As film crews employ many people from several different backgrounds, it’s a daily reminder to treat all creation with respect. And cast and crew took those words to heart every day and it contributed to a joyful set. Even more amazing given that there was a mix of crew of indigenous and non-indigenous people. The crew for Falls Around Her became an amalgamation of Toronto and Atikameksheng Anishnawbek/Sudbury/North Bay crews along with many indigenous locals. For the locals, it was the biggest production to ever have its home base on the reservation, and they were prepared for the challenge and the collective hard work of all is reflected on-screen.
