Guide to the Dance Program and MS-P026 2 Ephemera Collection, 1909-1987 This collection comprises printed materials, primarily dance programs, documenting significant international dancers, dance companies, festivals, performances, and events. The bulk of this collection comprises materials on 20th century American and European ballet performers and companies, such as the American Ballet Theatre, Ballet Russes and related companies (including Serge Diaghilev), Ballet Theatre, , Denishawn (including Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn), Graham, , , Royal Ballet, , Sadler's Wells Ballet, and . The collection also contains dance programs that document folk genres and international dance styles, primarily Indian, Japanese, and Spanish. A small group of printed ephemera documents various dance festivals, dance festivals, dance companies, and individuals, such as Isadora Duncan, George Balanchine, Mary Wigman, and others. Some programs contain biographical profiles of performers, numerous illustrations, and reproductions of photographs by significant artists, such as Léon Basket, André Derain, Nataliia Segeevna Goncharova, George Platt Lynes, and . The term "event program" is used to describe materials printed for particular performances with information concerning features of the performance, usually with the name of participants or performing arts organizations. Event programs often contain specific times, dates, cast, and ticket information. The term "souvenir program" is used to describe materials that were issued annually or seasonally, often lacking specific information about featured performances, times, dates, and performance cast. Series 1. Ballet and modern dance programs, 1909-1987. Physical Description: 8.2 linear ft. Scope and Content Note This series comprises dance programs documenting American and and modern dance performers and companies. This series is particularly strong in documenting Serge Diaghilev's original Ballets Russes (1910-1929) and related companies, such as Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo (1938-1961), Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo (1933-1934), W. de Basil's Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo (1935-1947), and (1940-1946). Many of these programs contain illustrations, designs, and photographs by significant artists. In particular, the Ballets Russes (Serge Diaghilev) souvenir programs are profusely illustrated with costume and scene designs by Léon Bakst, André Derain, Nataliia Sergeevna Goncharova, Pablo Picasso, and others. Photographs by George Platt Lynes can also be found on a number of New York City Ballet souvenir program covers. Other kinds of printed materials documenting individual performers and dance companies, such as clippings, journal issues, broadsides, brochures, exhibit catalogs, memorial service programs, calendars, and related ephemera, can be found in Series 3. This series is arranged by performer or dance company.
