World Premiere of Angels’ Atlas by Crystal Pite Presented with Chroma & Marguerite and Armand Principal Dancer Greta Hodgkinson’s Farewell Performances Casting Announced February 26, 2020… Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced the casting for Angels’ Atlas by Crystal Pite which makes its world premiere on a programme with Chroma by Wayne McGregor and Marguerite and Armand by Frederick Ashton. The programme is onstage February 29 – March 7, 2020 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. #AngelsAtlasNBC #ChromaNBC #MargueriteandArmandNBC The opening night cast of Angels’ Atlas features Principal Dancers Heather Ogden and Harrison James, First Soloist Jordana Daumec, Hannah Fischer and Donald Thom, Second Soloists Spencer Hack and Siphesihle November and Corps de Ballet member Hannah Galway. Principal Dancer Greta Hodgkinson retires from the stage after a career that has spanned over a period of 30 years. She will dance the role of Marguerite opposite Principal Dancer Guillaume Côté in Marguerite and Armand on opening night. The company will honour Ms. Hodgkinson at her final performance on Saturday, March 7 at 7:30 pm. Principal Dancers Sonia Rodriguez, Francesco Gabriele Frola and Harrison James will dance the title roles in subsequent performances. Juilliard Dance Senior Graduation Concert 2019 Welcome to Juilliard Dance Senior Graduation Concert 2019 Tonight, you will experience the culmination of a transformative four-year journey for the senior class of Juilliard Dance. Through rigorous physical training and artistic and intellectual exploration, all of the fourth-year dancers have expanded the possibilities of their movement abilities, stretching beyond what they thought possible when entering the program as freshmen. They have accepted the challenge of what it means to be a generous citizen artist and hold that responsibility close to their hearts. Chosen by the dancers, the solos and duets presented tonight have been commissioned for this evening or acquired from existing repertory and staged for this singular occasion. The works represent the manifestation of an evolution of growth and the discovery of their powerfully unique artistic voices. I am immensely proud of each and every fourth-year artist; it has been a joy and an honor to get to know the senior class, a group of individuals who will inevitably change the landscape of the field of dance as it exists today. A Study on the Gender Imbalance Among Professional Choreographers Working in the Fields of Classical Ballet and Contemporary Dance
Where are the female choreographers? A study on the gender imbalance among professional choreographers working in the fields of classical ballet and contemporary dance. Jessica Teague August 2016 This Dissertation is submitted to City University as part of the requirements for the award of MA Culture, Policy and Management 1 Abstract The dissertation investigates the lack of women working as professional choreographers in both the UK and the wider international dance sector. Although dance as an art form within western cultures is often perceived as ‘the art of women,’ it is predominately men who are conceptualising the works and choreographing the movement. This study focuses on understanding the phenomenon that leads female choreographers to be less likely to produce works for leading dance companies and venues than their male counterparts. The research investigates the current scope of the gender imbalance in the professional choreographic field, the reasons for the imbalance and provides theories as to why the imbalance is more pronounced in the classical ballet sector compared to the contemporary dance field. The research draws together experiences and statistical evidence from two significant branches of the artistic process; the choreographers involved in creating dance and the Gatekeepers and organisations that commission them. Key issues surrounding the problem are identified and assessed through qualitative data drawn from interviews with nine professional female choreographers. A statistical analysis of the repertoire choices of 32 leading international dance companies quantifies and compares the severity of the gender imbalance at the highest professional level. The data indicates that the scope of the phenomenon affects not only the UK but also the majority of the Western world. -

This season is dedicated to the loving memory of Shelley King – who, as D YAGP’s Director of Operations for the past 12 years, has changed countless young artists’ lives by helping them realize their dreams of becoming professional dancers. As we continue to honor Shelley’s dedication and passionate love for dance, we ask that you join us in celebrating her indomitable spirit. We would like to introduce two newest members of our team who will be in charge of registration - Billie Buddenhagen and Justin Sebesta. As a former General Manager of Ballet Austin, Billie brings a wealth of professional experience to our organization – and, as a ballet mom herself, she has a thorough understanding of the perspective of participants, parents and teachers. She joins YAGP as Regional Director, with Justin as Regional Manager. As the world’s largest student ballet scholarship competition, YAGP constantly works to expand its global network of dance. This year, we are thrilled to announce two new semi-final locations: Beijing, People’s Republic of China and Salt Lake City in the United States. We hope that this will create greater access for more talented young dance artists to participate in YAGP’s education and performance opportunities. In an effort to make the NYC Finals experience more convenient and economical for participants and their families, we have chosen a new venue for the Finals and Gala: the Howard Gilman Opera House at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. -

Virginia Regional Ballet Academy sponsors the Virginia Regional Ballet, Inc., whose purpose is to bring to the community and develop among its citizens an educational and cultural program in dance. BBC ARTS ANNOUNCES THE LINE UP FOR DANCE FESTIVAL #DANCEPASSION A celebration of the UK’s flourishing dance scene in collaboration with One Dance UK bbc.co.uk/dance Dancers rigged to 3D motion tracking bodysuits will show how science is pushing the boundaries of choreography as part of an unprecedented celebration of the UK’s dance scene, which will also include exclusive rehearsals and insights from some of the country’s leading practitioners. These are just some of the highlights of #DancePassion, a dance festival being organised by BBC Arts in collaboration with One Dance UK, along with leading names and exciting new talent. Aimed at ‘those who love dance as well as those who don’t yet know they love dance’, #DancePassion will run across television, radio and online on the BBC from Sunday 31 March to Saturday 6 April, with a live streaming day on Friday 5 April. Tuesday 1 June 2021 The Royal Opera House announces full details of the 2021/22 Season • 11 new productions, including 5 world premieres, and 20 revivals. • An exciting roster of UK and international talent with many debuts The Royal Opera House today confirms details for its 2021/22 Season, the first full Season since 2019. Opening on Monday 13 September, the Season includes five world premieres from The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera, classic revivals and an exciting roster of international and UK talent performing across the two stages of the Royal Opera House. In its 90th anniversary year, The Royal Ballet presents a Season that respects the past and heralds the future. Three world premieres, including Wayne McGregor’s The Dante Project, Christopher Wheeldon’s Like Water for Chocolate and a new work by American choreographer Kyle Abraham, are performed alongside much-loved 19th-century classics and heritage ballets by Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan. The Linbury Theatre hosts a raft of partnerships and co-productions including with Ballet Black, Alessandra Ferri, Yorke Dance Project and a world premiere from Company Wayne McGregor. Creative opportunities for emerging talent will also feature with Draft Works and the Next Generation Festival. The Season culminates in July 2022 with The Royal Ballet 1 making a welcome return to international touring with a three-week tour of Japan where the Company will perform Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon and Peter Wright’s Giselle. Pite founded her dance theatre company Kidd Pivot in 2002. Since then she and the performers with whom she has collaborated have created Lost Action (2006), Dark Matters (2009), The You Show (2010), The Tempest Replica (2011), and Betroffenheit, all while gaining international fame and attention. In this thesis, I am most interested in the latter. Betroffenheit was co-created with Pite and actor Jonathon Young, co-founder and artistic director of Vancouver’s innovative and multi-award-winning Electric Company Theatre. Pite’s choreography integrates theatricality, movement, music, Young’s autobiographical narrative and text, and visual design.
