Senior Graduation Concert 2019

Welcome to Juilliard Dance Senior Graduation Concert 2019

Tonight, you will experience the culmination of a transformative four-year journey for the senior class of Juilliard Dance. Through rigorous physical training and artistic and intellectual exploration, all of the fourth-year dancers have expanded the possibilities of their movement abilities, stretching beyond what they thought possible when entering the program as freshmen. They have accepted the challenge of what it means to be a generous citizen artist and hold that responsibility close to their hearts.

Chosen by the dancers, the solos and duets presented tonight have been commissioned for this evening or acquired from existing repertory and staged for this singular occasion. The works represent the manifestation of an evolution of growth and the discovery of their powerfully unique artistic voices.

I am immensely proud of each and every fourth-year artist; it has been a joy and an honor to get to know the senior class, a group of individuals who will inevitably change the landscape of the field of dance as it exists today. Please join me for a standing ovation, cheering on the members of the class of 2019 as they take the stage for the last time together in the Peter Jay Sharp Theater. Well done, dancers—we thank you for your beautiful contributions to our Juilliard community and to the world beyond our campus.

He continued his training at Walnut Hill • Lester R. and School for the Arts, graduating in 2015. While at Juilliard he has performed Doris S. A native of Lake Worth, Fla., Clarissa Castañeda began her serious training at 13 at Boca Ballet Theater under the tutelage of Dan Guin and Jane Tyree. While there, she danced many including The Sleeping Beauty, , Balanchine’s Valse Fantasie and Serenade, and Afternoon of a Faun. After graduating in 2015, she continued her training at Juilliard, where she has performed new works by Helen Simoneau, Katarzyna Skarpetowska, Roy Assaf, and Stefanie Batten Bland as well as repertory pieces by Richard Alston, , and Alejandro Cerrudo. Castañeda has attended summer programs such as Alonzo King LINES Ballet (full merit scholarship) and Springboard Danse Montréal, where she performed an

Benjamin Simoens started dancing at age 5. He began his training in Los • Cara and Angeles at a small school, Lauridsen Ballet Centre, where he studied Hiram Lewine primarily classical ballet and was introduced to . Juilliard Scholarship • Edward John has immersed him in varied techniques including Graham, Limón, Forsythe, Noble Foundation Horton, and Gaga. For three consecutive summers (2013-15), he attended Scholarship the summer intensive and trained with such notable teachers as Patrick Armand, Parish Maynard, and Jeffery Lyons. Simoens has performed lead roles in The Nutcracker, Peter Pan, and Jerome Robbins’ Moves. He was a 2014 winner in dance for the YoungArts Foundation and has been recognized for his contributions to the arts by the California State Senate. Simoens will begin his professional dance career with Milwaukee Ballet for its 2019-20 season.

• Marjorie Tallman Can (pronounced “Tsan”) Wang is a dancer and an aspiring choreographer Memorial from China who has performed works by , Merce Scholarship • Cara and Cunningham, José Limón, Nacho Duato, Stephanie Batten-Bland, Roy Hiram Lewine Assaf, Katarzyna Skarpetowska, Helen Simoneau, and Andrea Miller, Scholarship among others. Her own choreographic works have been performed on stages in China, the U.S., and South Korea. She has also collaborated with internationally acclaimed visual artists. She started her ballet training at the Affiliated School of Dance Academy at age 10, began studying at Beijing Dance Academy in 2013, and completed training in contemporary dance at Unitec Institute of Technology in New Zealand in 2015. She looks forward to continuing her artistic journey after graduation.

Miranda-Ming Quinn She Is Trying to Be Born (Premiere)

Miranda-Ming Quinn began dancing in her hometown of Baltimore and trained at Mid-Atlantic Center for the Performing Arts under the artistic • Jerome L. Greene direction of Shannon Torres. She is well-versed in both classical and Fellowship contemporary styles along with a novice zest for . She is proud to be a part of the Juilliard community with the support of the Jerome L. Greene Fellowship, which has created opportunities to work with choreographers from the U.S. and Europe and to perform works of world renowned choreographers, fellow students, and of her own creation. She is eager to continue pursuing a career as a performing artist and would like to thank everyone who has played a role in her development thus far. She will be joining American Dance Theater for the 2019-20 season.

Choreographer: Nicolas Noguera Music: “High and Dry” by Radiohead, produced by XL Recordings Recording: “what happens when you stop talking to yourself all the time,” a speech by Alan Watts • Jerome L. Greene Fellowship Oliver Flor Jull, born and raised in Denmark, started dancing when he was accepted into the School in fifth grade. There he was trained in the classical Bournonville ballet technique. After ninth grade he decided that he wanted to see the world, so his adventure continued at Interlochen Arts Academy, where he would dive deeper into his studies and danced in multiple full-length ballets. After high school he was accepted by Juillliard, where he would become part of multiple creative processes with renowned choreographers and creators such as Stephanie Batten Bland, Roy Assaf, and many more.

Nicholas Jurica grew up in Beaverton, Ore. At 10 years old he was put into a ballroom class by his mom (thanks, Mom!). At 13 he attended ACMA, a public arts school in Beaverton, under the directorship of Julane Stites. The following year he joined Nancy Davis and Jim Lane’s school, the Portland Ballet. The next big change in schooling was coming to Juilliard. • Irene Diamond Jennie Palomo was born and raised in Orange County, Calif. At age 4, she Scholarship began studying dance at West Coast School of the Arts, mainly ballet, • Albina Andrews Scholarship contemporary, and jazz. She is an alum of the Orange County School of the Arts under the Commercial Dance Conservatory where she studied modern, tap, and hip-hop. During her time at Juilliard, she has had the privilege of performing works by , José Limon, and Mark Morris, as well as new creations by Roy Assaf, Stefanie Batten Bland, Kate Skarpetowska, and Helen Simoneau. She would love to thank her parents, family, mentors, and friends for their constant support througout her years at Juilliard.

Matthew Quigley grew up in and and studied dance at • Margaret J. and ’s National Ballet School, graduating in 2015 with multiple awards. Roy H. Pollack He went on to study dance at Juilliard and will receive his BFA in May, Scholarship • Josef and Melinda 2019. He has performed repertoire by Crystal Pite, Richard Alston, Ohad Romon Scholarship Naharin and José Limón. He has worked with choreographers Andrea Miller, Roy Assaf, Stephanie Batten Bland, Bobbi Jene Smith, Danielle Agami, Katarzyna Skarpetowska, and Helen Simoneau. An active choreographer, photographer, and visual artist, he will continue dancing in after graduation.

Myles Langston Hunter La Giustizia (Premiere)

Choreographer: Katarzyna Skarpetowska Music: From Giulio Cesare—Act III, Scene 5, La giustizia (Sesto), by Costume Design: Myles Hunter • Irene Diamond Myles Langston Hunter is a native of Los Angeles, where he attended Scholarship • Juilliard the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. During his sophomore Scholarship year at Juilliard, he and four other Juilliard students were selected to travel to Botswana, South Africa, to teach dance and theater to underprivileged students interested in the performing arts. Last summer, he danced at several programs such as Perry-Mansfield, Bodytraffic, NDT, and Arts Umbrella. In his spare time, he builds his skills as a clothing, costume, and dance wear designer. He is the creator, founder, and seamster of the clothing line Luxury Langston.

Moscelyne ParkeHarrison grew up in the Berkshires and attended Walnut Hill School for the Arts. At Juilliard, she performed in New and • Edward John the repertoire of José Limón, Nacho Duato, Robert Dekkers, Crystal Pite, Noble Foundation Scholarship and Martha Graham. She trained and performed with the Jacob’s Pillow • Rebekah Harkness Contemporary Ensemble, as well as the composing principals of Iztok Kovac Scholarship in at b12 in Berlin. She won a best choreography prize at the New York Theater Dance Summerfest 2018 for the play He & She. A Gluck Community Fellow and volunteer for Dance for PD, she has also been a residence life assistant for two years. She would like to thank her family for their endless support, peers for their inspiration and levity, and the instructors of Juilliard for their valuable mentorship.

Mio Ishikawa Exhausting space (excerpt) (2013)

Choreographer: Iván Pérez Music: Rutger Zuydervelt Light design: Peter Lemmens Costumes: Carlijn Petermeijer • Tomodachi Suntory Exhausting Space is an adaptation of Attention, the doors are closing!, Music Scholarship created at Ballet Moscow in a coproduction with Korzo Productions and supported by Fund Performing Arts Netherlands.

Mio Ishikawa is a native of Tokyo, where she began training at age 5. Majoring in economics at college in Tokyo, she found a strong interest in the relationship between performing arts and society, which motivated her to come to Juilliard. During her time here, she has performed works by Alejandro Cerrudo, Stefanie Batten Bland, Shannon Gillen, Twyla Tharp, Roy Assaf, Mark Morris, Katarzyna Skarpetowka, Helen Simoneau, and José Limón along with her exploration in choreography. She will continue her pursuit of the arts through dancing, creating, and teaching with her cross-cultural experience between home in the East and training in the West. She would like to thank everyone who has supported her in achieving her dream.

Luca Devlyn Sierra is a dancer and filmmaker from Los Angeles. He has performed works choreographed by José Limón, Mark Morris, Helen • Irene Diamond Simoneau, Kate Skarpetowska, Roy Assaf, Stefanie Batten Bland, and Scholarship • Juilliard Crystal Pite. As a filmmaker, he has freelanced as a director/cinematographer Scholarship throughout the New York fashion scene. He has made films for Asher Levine, Morgan Le Faye, and KESNYC that appeared in New York Fashion Week and the Museum of . He has also interned for Dance Films Association at .

Anca Putin Uncover (Premiere)

Born and raised in Arad, , Anca Putin began training as an aerobic gymnast at age 5. At a young age she achieved the titles of national and • Lucille and Jack European champions. Chase Buntrock and Sean Lammer Excerpt from Shalosh (2005)

Choreographer: Rehearsal Director: Bobbi Jene Smith Music: Na Tum Jaano Na Hum by Rajesh Roshan, recorded by Lucky Ali & Ramya • Agnes Varis Original Lighting: Ani Yona “Bambi” Bueno Scholarship • Lester Lanin Scholarship Chase Buntrock is from Chicago. After training as a competitive gymnast for 10 years, he realized he wanted a more artistic outlet. He made his transition into dance at 13 and quickly discovered it was his passion. Prior to Juilliard, he trained at the Chicago Academy for the Arts High School, where he immediately joined the repertory company under the direction of Randy Duncan. In the summer following his senior year, he performed as a guest with Visceral Dance Company of Chicago at Jacob’s Pillow dance festival on the Inside/Out stage. During his summers, he has trained at San Francisco Ballet, Arts Umbrella, Nederlands Dans Theater, and Springboard Danse Montréal, and has performed works by Crystal Pite, Sharon Eyal, Merce Cunningham, Roy Assaf, and more. Buntrock is thrilled to join Ballet BC for the 2019-20 season.

Sean Lammer was born in Lancaster, Pa., and began dancing at age 5. After graduating from Walnut Hill School of the Arts in 2015, he attended Juilliard, where he has danced works by Ohad Naharin, Twyla Tharp, Nacho Duato, Martha Graham, José Limón, Roy Assaf, Helen Simoneau, and Katarzyna Skarpetowska as well as exploring his own choreographic work through several concerts and collaborations. At Juilliard, Lammer has discovered an interest in community engagement through dance and has worked and • Lester Lanin volunteered as a teaching artist internationally and domestically at programs Scholarship in Botswana, South Africa; New Orleans; and Orlando. He is a Gluck Fellow, a program that fosters community engagement through free and interactive concerts at healthcare facilities and other events in the five boroughs.

Jacob Thoman is a native of Cincinnati who trained and performed with Exhale Dance Tribe and for four years before joining • Juilliard Juilliard Dance’s class of 2019 under Larry Rhodes and Alicia Graf Mack. Scholarship He has received additional training from Cedar Lake’s Intensive 360/180, Springboard Danse Montréal, and the Eastman Summer Program. Thoman has performed works by Crystal Pite, Mark Morris, Alejandro Cerrudo, and Stefanie Batten Bland, among others. Post-graduation, he is excited to be working professionally in with the Shed as a dancer in Dragon Spring Phoenix Rise with choreography by .

Megan Myers Vollmond (Premiere 2006, Schauspielhaus Wuppertal)

This solo is performed in cooperation with Pina Bausch Foundation, • Mel Silverman Wuppertal/. Dance Scholarship • Yolanda Sardi Schwartzman Megan Myers was born and raised in Cincinnati, where she began her Scholarship training at De La Arts and Z Company. At age 17, she moved to Chicago • Stephen E. Somers to become an apprentice with Hubbard Street 2 under the direction of Scholarship Terence Marling. At Juilliard, she has found an interest in the intersection of dance with other art forms including fashion, theater, and film. She has collaborated on dance films and New York Fashion Week presentations for brands including Morgane Le Fay and KES that brought recognition from Vogue. She has also performed with Andrea Miller’s Gallim at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and with the Francesca Harper Project. Myers would like to thank her family, teachers, and friends for their unconditional love, support, and guidance.

• Norman and Born and raised in Stockholm, Simon Rydén was trained at the Royal Swedish Rosina Winston Ballet School before attending Juilliard. He has performed works by Aszure Scholarship • Eileen Hayes Barton, Jiri Kylian, Merce Cunningham, Roy Assaf, and Fredrik “Benke” Ludlam Rydman, among others. He also enjoys choreographing his own works. Scholarship

Kylie James A Message to Myself (Premiere)

Choreographer: Koinè Iwasaki Music: “A Message to Myself” by Roo Panes Costumes: L.A. Dance Designs

• Irene Diamond Born in Miami, Kylie James began dancing at age 3. She graduated from Scholarship Somerset Arts Conservatory with honors, receiving its excellence in the arts award. While at Juilliard she has worked with world-renowned choreographers such as Helen Simoneau, Katarzyna Skarpetowska, Roy Assaf, and Stefanie Batten Bland. She has also performed works by Bill T. Jones, Twyla Tharp, and Mark Morris. Her background has given her diverse experience in ballet, pointe, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, tap, and lyrical. Over the years, she has trained at prestigious programs such as the , IbStage in Barcelona, and Alonzo King LINES Ballet. James also has a passion for choreography and has earned top honors for her pieces at regional and national dance competitions.

Ethan Colangelo And Then (Premiere)

Choreographer: Stephan Laks, in collaboration with Ethan Colangelo Music: “Killing Time”and “Beasts of This Earth” by Nicholas Jaar Text: Excerpt from a lecture by Julian Jaynes

A native of Toronto, Ethan Colangelo is in his final year at Juilliard, where he has created work inside its walls but has also presented his creations elsewhere. In 2016 three of his student choreographic workshop pieces were performed at the school's Choreographic Honors showcase. That summer he was selected for a choreographic residency at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance’s Gaga Summer Intensive, where he created a work for six women. Last fall Colangelo was selected to present work at Reverb Dance Festival NYC, where a classmate performed a solo work. In 2017 Guillaume Cote (associate choreographer of the National Ballet of Canada) invited Colangelo to create work at Cote’s Montreal festival, Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur, where he presented two separate pieces. In 2018 Colangelo presented work at the APAP 2018 showcases and was one of nine choreographers selected internationally for the Copenhagen International Choreography Competition.

Zoe Hollinshead Erotics of Doubt (Premiere)

Choreographer: Zoe Hollinshead Music: “Claire de Lune” by Claude Debussy, performed by Martin Jones

Zoe Hollinshead is a native of Atlanta and has been dancing for 17 years. She was trained at Spelman College and DanceMakers of Atlanta before • Jerry Bywaters being accepted into Juilliard. In addition to all of the wonderful performance Cochran Scholarship in opportunities during the past four years, she was also able to nurture a love Dance in Honor of for outreach through programs such as Juilliard ARTreach, stArtOsceola, Gluck Community Fellowship, and CLIMB teaching fellowship, all facilitated • Irene Diamond by the school and its alumni. She hopes to continue to be a part of such Scholarship programs upon her graduation. As she finishes her senior year, she is excited for the future and extremely grateful and humbled by the enriching and unique experiences she has had. Maddie Hanson without color (Premiere)

Choreographer: Jiríˇ Pokorný Music: "Spindrift" and "Circulaire" by Biosphere

Canadian artist Maddie Hanson was accepted into Juilliard as an early admission student at age 16. She trained at Soul Motion Integrated Movement Arts, and was an Elite Protégé with Pulse on Tour, Monsters of Hip Hop, and member of immaBeast Company since 2013. She has danced with artists Jirí ˇPokorný, Cindy Salgado, Roy Assaf, Johannes Wieland, Stephanie Batten-Bland, Tony Testa, and Dana Foglia, and has performed works by Martha Graham, José Limón, and Crystal Pite. Her choreographic work has been presented at APAP NYC, DUMBO Dance Festival, SFCD Choreographic Residency, Baryshnikov Arts Center, and Hall. She is represented by MOI Artist Management and bloc LA. She would like to thank her family for their constant love and support!

Christina Zuccarello

Christina Zuccarello began dancing at age 3 and trained in Connecticut. When she was 16 she attended the Ailey School under the direction of Tracy Inman and Melanie Person, studying ballet and modern dance. At Juilliard, she has performed works by Crystal Pite, Roy Assaf, Stephanie Batten Bland, Austin McCormick, Aszure Barton, and Jiri Kylian. In her third year here, she performed with Andrea Miller’s company, Gallim, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She recently performed a work created by Alexandra Damiani at the Joyce Theater.

Due to injury Christina Zuccarello will not be performing this evening.

Dana Foglia

After her success as a professional dancer touring the world with Beyoncé, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, and many more, Dana Foglia went on to work as the assistant choreographer for Beyoncé’s “I Am…” Tour. She continued to work closely with Beyoncé, choreographing for the Mrs. Carter Tour, On The Run Tour, and the Formation World Tour. At the MTV Video Music Awards, Foglia received a moon man statuette for Beyonce’s video of the year Formation, winning best choreography in a music video. She also has received a prestigious Peabody award for her work on Beyonce’s visual album Lemonade. Her choreography has been seen all over the stages of the Grammys, Oscars, BET Awards, MTV Awards, on Jimmy Kimmel’s show, music videos, and commercials for Samsung and Farfetch, and for many artists including Jennifer Lopez, Jhene Aiko, and Common. Ted Sullivan (Lighting Designer)

Ted Sullivan has worked on and off Broadway and toured extensively domestically and internationally. He has designed lighting for shows at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and Hartford Stage; lit dances choreographed by , Jiri Kylian, and ; and designed for dance companies such as Doug Varone and Dancers, , and Limón Dance Company. His work has also been seen at leading theaters worldwide, including the Metropolitan Opera, Taiwan’s Chaing Kai-Shek National Theatre, Mexico City’s Palacio de Bellas Artes, and the Kennedy Center’s Eisenhower and Terrace theaters. In addition to lighting theater, opera, and dance, he works in architectural lighting and has received two Lumen awards.

16 About Juilliard Dance

Now under the direction of Alicia Graf Mack, Juilliard Dance aims to create true contemporary dancers—trained equally in classical ballet and modern dance. The dance division was established in 1951 by during his tenure as president of Juilliard, with the guidance of founding division director Martha Hill, and it became the first major teaching institution to combine equal instruction in both contemporary and ballet techniques.

Each year 24 new dancers are accepted into the four-year BFA program. In addition to the daily ballet and modern technique classes, every dancer participates in classical and contemporary partnering, dance composition, anatomy, acting, dance history, stagecraft, production, music theory, repertory, and elements of performing. Dancers are encouraged to present their own choreographed works in informal concerts and workshop presentations. Each fall every class has the opportunity to work with established choreographers in premiere dances as part of the New Dances performances. Recent commissions include works by Bryan Arias, Roy Assaf, Stefanie Batten Bland, Peter Chu, Gentian Doda, Gustavo Ramírez Sansano, Nelly van Bommel, and Marcus Jarrell Willis. Spring performances give dancers the opportunity to perform in established works from the repertory. Recent repertory performances have included works by Nacho Duato, William Forsythe, Martha Graham, Bill T. Jones, Jiríˇ Kylián, José Limón, Crystal Pite, Paul Taylor, and Twyla Tharp.

Juilliard Dance alumni include, among many others, the choreographers and directors Robert Battle, Pina Bausch, Jessica Lang, , Andrea Miller, Ohad Naharin, and Paul Taylor. Juilliard dancers are currently dancing in Nederlands Dans Theater, Nederlands Dans Theater 2, Ballet BC, Aspen/ Santa Fe Ballet, BJM_Danse, L.A. Dance Project, Limón Dance Company, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, Ballett des Saarländisches Staatstheater, Kidd Pivot, and , among many others, as well as in several Broadway productions.

The Juilliard Dance Division is the proud recipient of the 2015 Award, the first educational institution to receive the honor.
