    TEN YEARS SUPPORTING, DELIVERING & PROMOTING THE WHOLE SPECTRUM OF ANIMATION Directors Message Wow – we made it to our 10th anniversary!! Who would have thought it? From very humble beginnings – our first festival in 2004 screened at the now-defunct Rupert Street Cinema in Piccadilly – to LIAF 2013, 10 days at 3 different venues. We have survived - sort of. Over 10 years we’ve received more than 12,000 entries, screened more than 2,500 films, and had some of the most talented animators in the world come and hang out with us. And we’ve had a ball on the way. It’s time to blow our own trumpet. As well as being the largest festival of it’s kind in the UK in terms of films and programmes screened, we have a substantial touring component and we run satellite events all year-round. We’ve screened at festivals, cinemas, theatres and colleges all around the world and in the UK and hopefully we have spread the word that animation is a valid artform that is only limited by the animator’s imagination. In short, our maxim is that in animation anything can happen. Long may this be. There are far too may people to thank here (hopefully you know who you are) but the guidance and immense work-rate of my co-Director Malcolm Turner has to be acknowledged. Way back when in our ground zero - actually in the year 1999 - I still vividly recall that very first meeting Malcolm and I had with our then-colleague Susi Allender in the back garden of our Melbourne flat.

By the mid-1990s, however, east Germans began to see their old state differently, bringing back their Ampelmann as a reminder of the safety, security, and equality their old state possessed. Following his resurrection, Ampelmann transformed into a pop-culture icon as shops sprung up selling Ampelmann-branded products. From here, his popularity spread as Ampelmann lights appeared in western Germany and Ampelmann shops opened their doors not only in Berlin, but also in Tokyo and Seoul. East Germans supported this, declaring that his popularity showed that their past and its values could find a place in a globalizing world. In doing so, East Germans have used and rewritten their past to promote a more respectful and equitable alternative to modern life. 2 Introduction: Traffic lights were probably the last thing on the minds of East Germans on 9 November 1989 as the Berlin Wall fell and the borders of their German Democratic Republic (GDR) opened.

TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL SHORT CUTS PROGRAMME ANNOUNCES INTERNATIONAL TITLES TORONTO — The Toronto International Film Festival® is pleased to announce the international titles that complete the full lineup for the Short Cuts programme. Forty-one titles join 33 previously announced Canadian short films, which will screen in 11 curated programmes. With settings that range from rural Tanzania to Mexico City, from war-torn Syria to a seemingly ordinary American suburb, the extraordinary works that make up this year’s programme capture perspectives and experiences in nearly every corner of the globe. Films in the Short Cuts programme are eligible for the Short Cuts Award for Best Film. This year's jury includes American filmmaker Abteen Bagheri (That B.E.A.T.), French filmmaker Eva Husson (Bang Gang), and Canadian filmmaker Jeff Barnaby (Rhymes for Young Ghouls). SHORT FILMS, EPIC STORYTELLING: TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL PRESENTS A POWERFUL AND DIVERSE CANADIAN SHORT FILM LINEUP TORONTO — The Toronto International Film Festival® unveiled an exciting slate of 37 Canadian short films sure to captivate and inspire international audiences with their original and compelling stories. This year’s short film roster celebrates established filmmakers and a new wave of talent. Their creative visions are as diverse in perspectives and distinctive in experiences as Canada is rich in communities, people, and voices. This year’s selection includes 17 films by women directors, 6 films from Canadian Indigenous directors, and several films that focus on stories from remote regions of the country. From animation to documentary, fiction to experimental, these shorts showcase fascinating and provocative stories that are uniquely Canadian. Canadian films in the Short Cuts programme are eligible for the Short Cuts Award for Best Canadian Film, and the Short Cuts Award for Best Film.
