The 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, was an important player in the ultimate success of the Wilderness Act of 1964 (signed into law the year after his untimely death). John F. Kennedy is the focus of this Wilderness Hero spotlight. They were rotten—black and slimy—and they smelled terrible. A wave of fear shook the young man. A fungus had been spreading from farm to farm throughout Ireland for a few years, and now it had reached Patrick’s land. Without his potato crop, he would die of starvation or sickness. Nearly one million Irish people had already died. Knowing that staying in Ireland would be a dead end, Patrick decided to join the many thousands of people who were fleeing the country and boarding ships bound for the United States. Patrick had heard that America was a land of opportunity. Certainly, life would be better there than in Ireland. So Patrick spent his last bit of money to pursue this new dream. However, the voyage to the United States was worse than Patrick’s worst nightmare. So many people passed away that the ships became known as “coffin ships”; it was said that sharks followed the coffin ships, waiting for the corpses that were tossed overboard daily. -

Hofstra University Model United Nations Conference EXCOMM October, 1962 Crisis Committee Timothy Lachapelle Chairperson 1 Letter from the Chair Dear Delegates, Welcome to Hofstra Model United Nations, and the West Wing Crisis Committee. My name is Tim Lachapelle. I worked on the staff of the first HMUNC Crisis Committee, which re-created the West Wing in the post 9/11 Era. After two days of fast paced debate, and constant threat of nuclear Armageddon, the Hofstra Model UN club quickly discovered that the HMUNC delegates were up to any challenge that we throw at them. This year we are presenting another historical crisis scenario. In this committee you will all be acting as members of the Oval Office during the JFK era. The leaders of the nation are faced with many challenges during his presidency and this committee will be responsible for managing two potential crises: the first is the threat of Soviet missiles off the coast of Florida; the second is the constant threat of an attempt on the President’s life. Although this committee will rely on historical fact to solve these crises, the events will not play out exactly as they did in the history books. Some events or people involved may change depending on how the committee resolves each issue. I am currently a sophomore at Hofstra University, studying Political Science. I have been doing Model United Nations for one year. My first Model UN conference was at the University of Pennsylvania and I represented Iran in the World Health Organization. I discovered a passion for crisis committees when I worked on the staff of the crisis committee during the first Model UN conference ever hosted by Hofstra University. -

I’ve heard a lot about NYU Law School from John so I’m happy to be here today and find out it’s all true. On behalf of the members of my family, particularly Teddy, who’s here today, I want to thank the Dean and faculty and the Journal of Legislation and Public Policy for paying tribute to my uncle’s legislative legacy. Others will talk about Teddy’s mastery of the Senate, his far- sighted chairmanship of the Judiciary and HELP Committees, and the major legislation that would not have been passed but for his passion, commitment, and perseverance: the ADA, minimum wage, criminal justice code overhaul, immigration, changing the voting age to eigh- teen, and every major piece of civil and voting rights legislation over the past fifty years. It’s still hard to fully comprehend how directly Teddy’s work impacted the lives of every American. I thought I would just say a few words about him as person, be- cause I think that more than almost anyone else I’ve ever met, Teddy’s humanity is what made him such a legislative giant. Teddy was known to his many nieces and nephews for his big hugs, his big heart, and his come-one-come-all sailing expeditions. When fewer and fewer people wanted to join these death defying ex- cursions, he created the Family History Trip for all generations to visit historic sites together.
