BOOK REVIEWS The Keelboat Age on Western Waters. By Leland D. Baldwin. (Pittsburgh, University of Pittsburgh Press, 1941. xiv, 268 p. Maps, illustrations.) Here, in eight swiftly flowing chapters, is the turbulent story of river transportation in the Mississippi Valley prior to the steamboat era. Although Pittsburgh receives the spotlight and the Ohio Valley serves as the main stage for this colorful pageant, the Mississippi and the Missouri are not forgotten. The inclusion of such incidents as the capture of Vincennes on the Wabash during the American Revolution, the Battle of Campbell's Island on the Upper Mississippi during the War of 181 2, the great race of Manuel Lisa up the muddy Missouri in 181 1, and the removal of the famous Red River raft during the 1830's by Captain Henry MillerShreve illustrate the far-flung nature of the "boatable waters" of the Mississippi Valley which Thomas Hart Benton and William Clark estimated in 1820 at fiftythousand miles. Inhis opening chapter Dr. Baldwin discusses the role of the western waters in American expansion. Although primarily concerned with the keelboat, considerable space is allotted to the other types of river craft used in the Mississippi Valley from Revolutionary War days to about 1820. This is espe- cially true when boats and boat building are discussed in chapter two. The advantages and disadvantages of such craft as the bullboat and the bateau, the birchbark canoe and the dugout, the Mackinaw boat and the flatboat, the keel- boat and the barge are clearly outlined from the standpoint of cost, capacity, speed, and durability. -

Anyone can find a book here to suit them: casual readers, students, enthusiasts, reenactors, and historians. I include a few less distinguished books, too, when they are the only thing about a topic. For some fifteen years -- roughly speaking, 1823 to 1838 and beyond -- the western U.S. was the domain of the mountain men, fur trappers who spent years traveling and living in the wilderness. Long before wagon trains, settlers, gold rushes, cavalry, Indian wars, cowboys, wild west towns, or railroads, mountain men were the first from the U.S. to see the Rocky Mountains and the lands from the plains to the Pacific. Their life was highly free and adventuresome, and often dangerous and short, lived in a shining wilderness. Where to begin? Many books, many choices. For a readable and short introduction try Give Your Heart to the Hawks by Winfred Blevins. For detailed histories try A Life Wild and Perilous by Robert M. Utley or the classic history Across the Wide Missouri by Bernard DeVoto. Or try some of the best biographies, such as Westering Man The Life of Joseph Walker by Bil Gilbert and Jedediah Smith and the Opening of the West by Dale L. Morgan. For adventures or "camp fire tales" try the personal journals and narratives written by some of the mountain men themselves. -

'Very well,' said he, 'and in what Cause do I venture my Life? Why, in that of my Honour. And who is this human Being? A Rascal who hath injured and insulted me without Provocation. But is not Revenge forbidden by Heaven?-Yes, but it is enjoined by the World. Well, but shall I obey the World in opposition to the express Commands of Heaven? Two hundred years ago last July, the most famous duel in the history of the United States left dead one of the young Republic's most renowned statesmen and transformed another into a social pariah and, for a time, a fugitive from justice. -

Schachterle: Cooper and Wordsworth COOPER AND WORDSWORTH Lance Schachterle Worcester Polytechnic Institute To modern readers, James Fenimore Cooper and William Wordsworth exemplify important but quite different facets of Romanticism. To contemporaries, they ranked among the foremost writers in English in the first half of the nineteenth century. Yet these similarities pale before their apparent differences. Wordsworth’s lyric art and his introspective range of mind are far from what we usually think of as Cooper’s strengths—exciting narratives and ambiguous characters like the Leatherstocking who provoke us to contemplate the distinctiveness of American stock. Further, Cooper’s distaste for personal reflection (even in his letters) or for critical inquiry about the nature of literature differs strikingly from Wordsworth’s probings, in prose and poetry, about his art. Documentary evidence does exist, however, to indicate that Cooper read Wordsworth, and from that evidence we can begin to look more closely at both common traits and even literary influence. -

Abstract Title of Dissertation: Global Sympathy: Representing Nineteenth-Century Americans’ Foreign Relations Sarah J. Sillin Dissertation Directed By: Professor Robert S. Levine Department of English Over the past two decades, scholars have established sympathy’s key role in nineteenth-century literary culture and the development of U.S. nationalism. While examining the bonds that feeling forges among citizens, however, critics have largely neglected the question of how sympathy also links Americans to the larger world. Representations of global sympathy—wherein characters from different cultures share one another’s joy and pain—pervade nineteenth-century U.S. literature. My project analyzes how authors narrativized the nation’s political, territorial, and cultural changes, while underscoring the persistent importance of feeling in defining America’s global role. “Global Sympathy” tells a story about what happens when writers imagine Americans as the kith and kin of foreign peoples. Beginning in the early national period, the first chapter explores how James Fenimore Cooper employs tropes of foreign friendship to establish Americans’ equality to the British, inviting readers to re-imagine the British Empire as a valuable trading partner. My second chapter considers the importance of Christianity to Nathaniel Hawthorne and Maria Cummins, whose Protestant American heroines become metaphorical sisters to people in Italy and Syria, respectively. Read together, these pre-Civil War writers evoke confidence in Americans’ ability to navigate foreign relations amidst political instability. Yet with increasing U.S. expansion, writers in the second half of the nineteenth- century expressed growing concern about America’s foreign influence. Chapters three and four center on minority writers who employ sentiment to criticize the effects of imperialism on “foreign” peoples both within and outside the nation. -

Writing with a Forked Pen: Racial Dynamics and Johnson Jones Hooper's Twin Tale of Swindling Indians Shelia Ruzycki O'Brien Much Old Southwest humor isn't funny. Readers may occasionally chortle or chuckle, but the genre reflected and encouraged a racist social order in which the law of "claw and fang" was sanctioned by a pre-Spencerian version of Social Darwinism. Although Herbert Spencer did not coin the term "survival of the fittest" until the mid-1860s, Southwest "humorists" were building on a related political-ethical tradition already well developed by the early nineteenth century. Before Spencer, proponents of this tradition relied on a Biblical justification, claiming that God had planned this winnowing process for his creations. During the nineteenth century this religious legitimation of social inequality was rein- forced-by a resort to science, as the work of such men as Louis Agassiz, Samuel Morton, Josiah Nott, George Gliddon, and, finally, Charles Darwin provided what appeared to be a "scientific" rationale to undergird existing beliefs in inequality.1 This article examines racial dynamics in the humor of the Old Southwest in order to illumine the cultural and social significance of this genre, particularly in terms of how it reflects the intellectual and political impact of mid- nineteenth century scientific concerns about the nature of social hierarchy and dominance. Southwest humor, which flourished from the 1830s until the Civil War era, was set in the southwestern frontier as it moved through the interior of the Carolinas and Georgia and then westward through Tennessee, Alabama, Missis sippi, Arkansas, Missouri, and Louisiana.2 The genre focused on life in the semi- 0026-3079/93/3502-095$ 1.50/0 95 * Mr.
