In 1946, I, my two siblings, and my mother joined my father in Seattle. He had spent the years of German occupation of Norway in America. Names like Ketchikan, Sitka, Petersburg, Juneau, and Anchorage became quite familiar to the family as did the many intriguing tales from the halibut . For some time my father had his own fishing vessel, the Attu. I harbored a strong wish to see the places my father talked so much about, and with him as my guide. It was, however, not to be since a family tragedy, the drowning of my older brother off my father’s boat, precipitated a move back to Norway. After returning to the U.S. in 1967, the many responsibilities and demands relating to family and career took center stage and an Alaskan excursion was never realized. In retirement a desire persists to capture the spirit of my father’s long-ago fishing adventures in the sea lanes, bays, and open ocean along the Alaskan coast – a guided tour to these haunts thus becomes my Christmas wish. When I was growing up, Christmas wasn’t as elaborate as it is now. We ex- changed gifts with family members, but they were modest and often home- made. What I remember most about past are not the gifts but the fun we had at our family Christmas celebrations. I can also remember celebrating Christmas at church. Singing in the children’s choir, being in the Sunday School Pageant, and receiving that small bag of hard candy after- wards. This year many families will be having a modest Christmas because of hard economic times. My Christmas wish for everyone this year is that they will find great joy in the message of Christmas and in the love of fam- ily and friends. That has always been the best part of Christmas for me. My prayer is that the same will be true for everyone this Christmas.

When I lived in Norway, I was located not an hour from Porsgrunn, where every good Norwegian knows the porcelain factory has been located for years and years. Then, my grandmother came across an almost-complete set of Porsgrunn china in the Farmer’s Rose pattern in her friend’s attic! This is my favorite china pattern, and the Porsgrunn brand reminds me of the time I spent in Telemark. My Christmas wish is to complete the set...and maybe even also add some colorful Farmer’s Rose glasses to the collection!
