WESTERN VS. EASTERN-1914-1956 Highligh t of today's 50th Anniversary Homecoming celebration here at Western is this 31st meeting on the gridiron between the Western Hilltoppers and the Eastern Maroons. It is appropriate that the Maroons be the opponent for this Homecoming game as Eastern and Western both reached the half century mark this year, having been established by the State Legis lature in 1906. The rivalry between the two state colleges ranks as one of the oldest and most colorful in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The initial football game between the two schools came back in 1914 when Eastern won 36-6. From then until 1942 the Maroons never won again. A meeting in 1915 ended in a scoreless deadlock. The score of the 1916 game has been lost. Eastern forfeited the 1932 gam e, 1-0. In the long series Western has won 19 times, lost nine with one tie and the 1916 score lost. In 1942 the Maroons broke the long string of H illtopper wins, 18-0. During World War II football was suspended at both colleges . Eastern has dominated since the renewal of football in 1946. The Maroons have won seven of the 10 meetings since 1946. Saturday the Hilltoppers will go out to break a three-game string of wins racked up by the Maroons since 1953. Western has scored only one touchdown against the Maroons in this stretch. The Hilltoppers were shut out 7-0 last year at Eastern. In 1954 the Maroons won 21 -0 and in 1953 it was 13-7 in Eastern's favor. Western's 48-6 rout of the Maroons in 1952 was one of the largest scores ever posted in the historic series. Eastern comes in for the Homecoming battle with a record of one win and three losses for the season. The Maroons dropped Toledo 12-6 in their season opener. Then came losses to Murray, 14- 7; Middle Tennessee, 26-19, and East Tennessee, 13-12.
