Light has never received any extended coverage or historical treatment yet it was one of the major spiritualist newspapers during this part of British history. This thesis diagrams the lives of Light ’s first four major editors from 1881 till the end of World War I and their views on the growth of science, God, Christ, evolution, and morality. By focusing on one major spiritualist newspaper from 1881 till 1920, this thesis attempts to bridge the gap in spiritualist historiography that marks World War I as a stopping or starting point. -

A PPENDIX A Glossary of Spiritualist Terms and Techniques automatic writing. A Spirit uses the medium’s hand to write replies to any number of questions posed; also practiced by amateurs as a way of strengthening their spiritual powers. As an added feature, a magic pencil sometimes floats. In such instances, the Spirits are asking the medium to begin writing. How it is done: The pencil hangs on thin metal or glass wires. clairgustance or clairlience. A taste or smell associated with the Spirit. For example, if you are trying to contact your mother, who was fond of gardening, a waft of rose water might be introduced. How it is done: aromatherapy. dermography, also known as skin writing. The Spirits literally write words or pictures on the medium’s flesh. How it is done: Invisible ink, likely lemon juice, is used. When held up to a candle, the ink grows increasingly visible. ectoplasm. A pale, filmy materialization of the soul, produced by the medium when in a trance state. Likely invented by Leah Fox (circa 1860). The last manifestation of ectoplasm seems to have taken place in 1939. Cambridge University has a sample; it looks and feels like cheesecloth or chiffon. Female mediums sometimes stuffed ectoplasm in their vaginas, necessitating strip- searches. See also soul and Spirit’s progress. lampadomancy. Flame reading. The messages might be conveyed by changes in flame intensity, color, or direction. How it is done: Chemicals can be added to a segment of the candle to make the flame flicker or change color. Mediums, Spirits, and Spooks in the Rocky Mountains: A Brief History of Spiritualism in Colorado 1860-1950. “Scarcely another cultural phenomenon affected as many people or stimulated as much interest as did Spiritualism in the ten years before the Civil War and, for that matter, throughout the subsequent decades of the nineteenth century…. ‘in 1856, it seemed more likely that Spiritualism would become the religion of America than in 156 that Christianity would become the religion of the Roman Empire, or in 756 that Mohammedanism would be that of the Arabian population.’”1 Introduction During the second half of the nineteenth-century, the country was swept off of its feet by spiritualistic phenomena. Broadly defined, Spiritualism is the belief that the dead survive as spirits and can communicate with the living through the use of mediums or people with a special otherworldly perceptiveness or sensitivity that enables them to detect the presence of and communicate with spirits. Although documented happenings of otherworldly communication and paranormal phenomena have occurred around the world since the beginnings of written history, it was not until the year 1848, with the emergence of organized Spiritualism in the United States, that communication between the living and dead necessitated the assistance of a medium.2 The development of this Modern Spiritualism (the version that requires a medium) began in 1848 with the Fox sisters in Hydesville, New York. After the “Hydesville episode” of 1848, Spiritualism rapidly spread throughout the rest of the United States, starting a very popular trend that appealed to politicians of great import, quintessential authors, the elite of society, and the under classes alike. -

VICTOR HUGO AND SURREALISM: PHANTOM DRAWINGS, AUTOMATISM, AND THE OCCULT by JILL ALLISON MILLER Under the Direction of Professor Evan Firestone ABSTRACT During Victor Hugo’s exile on the Channel island of Jersey, between 1853-1855 he and his family conducted almost two hundred séances in which they allegedly received messages and drawings from famous deceased personalities. Besides being a writer and poet, Hugo was also a prolific artist who experimented with automatist and experimental techniques to create thousands of images. Many Surrealist figures, including André Breton, Robert Desnos, André Masson, and Max Ernst, admired aspects of Hugo’s art and writing. Comparing Hugo’s experimental art, séance writings, and attitudes towards psychic material to the art and ideas of Breton and his circle opens up substantial new insights on Victor Hugo as a precursor to Surrealism and on the movement’s connection to the nineteenth century. Conjugial Love and the Afterlife: New Readings of Selected Works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti in the Context of Swedenborgian-Spiritualism Anna Francesca Maddison BA (Hons), MA A thesis submitted to the Department of English and History Edge Hill University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy November 2013 Abstract This thesis re-examines selected works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti in the light of a specific engagement with Victorian spiritualism, which is characterised by an interest in the esoteric writings of the eighteenth-century mystic Emanuel Swedenborg. It locates Rossetti’s use of Swedenborgian imagery and ideas in his written and artistic work, contextualising it within his engagement with spiritualism, and with reference to his interest in a visionary tradition of literature. The thesis therefore furthers what has begun in embryo in both Rossetti and Victorian scholarship; drawing together two hitherto separate areas of research, to formulate new and detailed inter-disciplinary readings of Rossetti’s poetry, fine art and design. The critical approach is twofold, combining historical scholarship with textual analysis. A cultural context is re-established which uncovers a network of Swedenborgian and spiritualist circles, and through original research, Rossetti’s connections to these are revealed. The specific approach of these groups, which this thesis calls ‘Swedenborgian-spiritualism’ (thereby naming a new term), is characterised by an intellectual, literary interest in Swedenborg, coupled with a practical engagement with spiritualism, and a fascination with the mesmeric trance state. In addressing three major works, ‘The Blessed Damozel’ (1850), Beata Beatrix (c.1863-71) and The House of Life (1881), the thesis traces Rossetti’s engagement with Swedenborgian-spiritualism through three distinct phases in his career, the result of which facilitates a greater understanding of the development of his poetics and artistry. -

The concerns and anxieties in the writing reflect significant developments in their times, and exist amid the questions incited by positivist science, sexological studies, and the dissemination and popularity of Darwin’s theories and the interpretations of Social Darwinism: What is the integrity of the human body, and what are the relevance and varieties of spiritual belief. The personal and the social issues of materiality and immateriality are present in the choice of Machen’s themes and the manner in which he expresses them. More specifically, Machen’s use of place and his interest in numinosity, which includes the negative numinous, are the twining forces where the local and the common, and the Ideal and the esoteric, meet. His interest in Western esotericism is important because of the Victorian occult revival and the ritual magic groups’ role in the development of individual psychic explorations. -

The girls developed a national reputation for their mediumship. In the process they sparked an interest in Spiritualism. This phenomena spread throughout the United States fascinating Americans, especially in the Northeast, and encouraging many to join séances and explore Spiritualist philosophy. Despite its controversial nature, Spiritualism enjoyed great popularity in the United States from the 1840s into the early twentieth century. Drew Gilpin Faust argues that by the beginning of the Civil War about 240,000 people in New York State (6% of the total population) practiced Spiritualism. She further claims that even in the South, where the support of slavery precluded many people from associating with the Spiritualist movement and its abolitionist allies, sizable numbers of Spiritualists practiced. For example, about 20,000 professing Spiritualists 3 lived in Louisiana.1 In nineteenth-century literature the word “spiritual” typically refers to interaction with spiritual entities, usually the dead. -

Signed by Elsa Catherine Richardson (30, September, 2013) …………………………………………………………. 2 ABSTRACT OF THESIS EXTRAORDINARY POWERS OF PERCEPTION: SCOTTISH SECOND SIGHT IN VICTORIAN CULTURE 1840-1910 In the mid-1890s the London based Society for Psychical Research dispatched researchers to the Scottish Highlands and Islands to investigate an extraordinary power of prophecy said to be peculiar to the residents of these remote regions. Described in Gaelic as the An-da-shealladh or ‘the two sights’, and given in English as ‘second sight’, the phenomenon was most commonly associated with the vision of future events: the death of neighbour, the arrival of strangers into the community, the success or failure of a fishing trip and so forth. The SPR were not the first to take an interest in this pre-visionary faculty, rather they joined a legion of scientists, travel writers, antiquarians, poets and artists who had made enquires into the topic from the end of the seventeenth century. This thesis examines the remarkably prominent position enjoyed by Scottish second sight in the Victorian popular imagination. In seeking to appreciate why a strange visionary ability was able to make claims upon the attention of the whole nation where other folk motifs were consigned to the realms of specialist interest only, this project charts its migration through a series of nineteenth-century cultural sites: mesmerism and phrenology, modern spiritualism and anthropology, romance literature and folklorism, and finally psychical research and Celtic mysticism. -
