TOPONYMY IN THE ARTHURIAN NOVELS BY MARY STEWART ТОПОНИМИКА АРТУРОВСКИХ РОМАНОВ МЭРИ СТЮАРТ MARY STEWART’IN ARTHUR KONULU ROMANLARINDA YER ADLARI * Andrey ANISIMOV ABSTRACT The article discusses toponymy in the Arthurian novels by the English writer Mary Stewart. The author of the article proves that native Celtic and Latinized Celtic toponyms are used in the novels along with modern English geographical names. The toponyms are considered from historical, geographical and linguistic points of view. Keywords: Mary Stewart, Arthurian Novels, Arthurian Legend, Toponymy, Place Name. ÖZET Makalede İngiliz yazarı olan Mary Stewart’ın artur romanlarında kullanılan toponimler tetkik edilmiştir. Yazar söz konusu romanlarda diğer çağdaş coğrafı adları ile birlikte öz Kelt’çe olan ve Latince’ye dönüştürülen Kelt’çe toponimlerin kullanıldığını ispat etmektedir. Toponimler tarihsel, coğrafyasal ve dilsel açısından incelenmiştir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Mary Stewart, Arthur Romanları, Arthur Efsanesi, Yer Adları, Coğrafi Adları. * PhD, Associate Professor NEFU Mary Stewart (born 17 September 1916) is a popular English novelist, best known for her Arthurian novels, which straddles the boundary between the historical novel and the fantasy genre. All the five novels (“The Crystal Cave”, “The Hollow Hills”, "The Last Enchantment”, “The Wicked Day” and “The Prince and the Pilgrim”) are united by a common aim and portray Dark Age Britain (V-VI c.).

  • Faye Jessica Keegan
SOFT METAFICTION(S): MARY STEWART AND THE SELF-REFLECTIVE MIDDLEBROW Faye Jessica Keegan Doctor of Philosophy School of English Literature, Language, and Linguistics Submitted in June 2016 i ii ABSTRACT This thesis examines the romantic thrillers of Mary Stewart, which were internationally bestselling novels in the post-war British fiction marketplace. Through my reading of Stewart, I nuance current critical perceptions of the mid-twentieth century middlebrow novel, which, I argue, is characterised in part by a self-conscious investigation of its position within the parameters of highbrow literature and popular fiction. As a critical category which is defined by its relation to literary value, I argue that works considered to be middlebrow are inherently self- reflective and metafictive, seeking to discreetly undermine the hierarchical structures which attempt to contain them. I posit the term ‘soft-metafiction’ to describe this; as opposed to ‘hard’ metafiction, which explicitly and insistently proclaims its self-awareness, soft-metafiction is involved in an understated, often sub-textual, exploration of its status as text. I argue that Stewart’s work is characterised by frequent use of intertextual reference and metafictive reflection on the nature and purpose of text as a concept. In Chapter One, I discuss Stewart’s engagement with notions of canonicity and literary value, showing how she defends the reading of middlebrow fiction against such figures as Q.D. Leavis, and how she challenges the position of women within the masculinised canon. In Chapter Two, I demonstrate how Stewart reflects upon the generic conventions of romance, fairytale, crime and gothic fiction to raise questions about gender and genre.

Phil. (Research Student), Shivaji University, Kolhapur Abstract: The present paper is an attempt to explore romantic Mysteries in the novels of Mary Stewart. Romantic mysteries or suspense is one of the hottest genre in the modern society. In my opinion, a romantic suspense means the novel which deals with threat of danger, both Hero and Heroine is in danger, but ultimately both Hero and Heroine reach the crescendo that leaves the mystery solved, the villain is defeated and the novel is ending in happily. The writers like Victoria holf, Daphine du maurier, Arthur conan Doyale, are the brilliant author’s in handling this genre. Modern romantic suspense novels are using technology, digitalization, in order to turn that novel into movie. The romantic suspense novel is galaxy of murder, scams, horrors and kindly love. In my opinion, there is misunderstanding regarding of what a romance novel is? In this novels we can see thought provoking ideas, heart-pounding actions, chase scenes, life threating situations, and dangerous criminals are all the common elements of suspense novels.
