Rao © 2015 Adriana Nicole Cerami ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Adriana Nicole Cerami: Mafia Motifs in Andrea Camilleri’s Detective Montalbano Novels: From the Culture and Breakdown of Omertà to Mafia as a Scapegoat for the Failure of State (Under the direction of Ennio I. Rao) Twenty out of twenty-six of Andrea Camilleri’s detective Montalbano novels feature three motifs related to the mafia. First, although the mafia is not necessarily the main subject of the narratives, mafioso behavior and communication are present in all novels through both mafia and non-mafia-affiliated characters and dialogue. Second, within the narratives there is a distinction between the old and the new generations of the mafia, and a preference for the old mafia ways. Last, the mafia is illustrated as the usual suspect in everyday crime, consequentially diverting attention and accountability away from government authorities. Few critics have focused on Camilleri’s representations of the mafia and their literary significance in mafia and detective fiction. The purpose of the present study is to cast light on these three motifs through a close reading and analysis of the detective Montalbano novels, lending a new twist to the genre of detective fiction. -

From Shakespeare to Modern Ages La sicilianità di Andrea Camilleri: “La forma dell‟acqua” come modello Dott.ssa Rania Zakaria Abdelsamad Nella mia ricerca, studio la sicilianità di Andrea Camilleri, che ha ottenuto grandi successi letterari con il giallo “La forma dell'acqua” nel 1994. Ha anche creato la serie del commissario Salvo Montalbano, e altri romanzi polizieschi, romanzi e racconti e film sono tutti ambientati in Sicilia. L'ambiente siciliano ha trasformato il destino di queste storie in giro per il mondo, tanto che alcuni critici hanno parlato del vero "caso Camilleri"1. Camilleri è considerato lo scrittore italiano più letto al mondo, con circa 20 milioni di libri venduti nel mondo e tradotti in più lingue2 per non parlare del successo degli adattamenti televisivi. Il concetto di spazio letterario che prevale nelle opere di Camilleri inizia ad essere studiato in modo più sistematico intorno agli anni '60 e '70. Questa tendenza fa parte di una controversia più ampia avviata da tanti studiosi che nel XX secolo hanno discusso se siamo eredi del tempo o abitanti dello spazio. Pertanto, il tempo e lo spazio sono il contenuto principale del testo. Dopo numerosi studi sul concetto di tempo, la priorità è stata data al metodo storico della letteratura, poi sono apparsi i primi studi sulla spazialità, che hanno introdotto anche metodi geografici, e che hanno segnato il primo passo nel campo della geografia letteraria. Often, conspiracy theories work as counter–narratives con- trasting the reassuring oYcial accounts of such shocking happenings. Fictional literature is one of the main channels for the diVusion of con- spiracy theories. Starting from such premises, the essay focuses on a corpus of Italian novels written in the last sixty years. They refer to four of the most upsetting moments of Italian national history (Risorgimento, the fall of Fascism, the “lead years”, and the passage from the first to the second Republic). The analysis concentrates on novels by Umberto Eco, Andrea Camilleri, Leonardo Sciascia, Rino Cammilleri, Carlo Alianel- lo, and Luciano Bianciardi. It singles out diVerent types of conspiracy narratives in contemporary Italian literature, each one characterized by peculiar recurrent motifs and characters. SOB SISTERS: THE IMAGE OF THE FEMALE JOURNALIST IN POPULAR CULTURE By Joe Saltzman Director, Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture (IJPC) Joe Saltzman 2003 The Image of the Female Journalist in Popular Culture revolves around a dichotomy never quite resolved. The female journalist faces an ongoing dilemma: How to incorporate the masculine traits of journalism essential for success – being aggressive, self-reliant, curious, tough, ambitious, cynical, cocky, unsympathetic – while still being the woman society would like her to be – compassionate, caring, loving, maternal, sympathetic. Female reporters and editors in fiction have fought to overcome this central contradiction throughout the 20th century and are still fighting the battle today. Not much early fiction featured newswomen. Before 1880, there were few newspaperwomen and only about five novels written about them.1 Some real-life newswomen were well known – Margaret Fuller, Nelly Bly (Elizabeth Cochrane), Annie Laurie (Winifred Sweet or Winifred Black), Jennie June (Jane Cunningham Croly) – but most female journalists were not permitted to write on important topics. Front-page assignments, politics, finance and sports were not usually given to women. Top newsroom positions were for men only. Novels and short stories of Victorian America offered the prejudices of the day: Newspaper work, like most work outside the home, was for men only. Women were supposed to marry, have children and stay home. To become a journalist, women had to have a good excuse – perhaps a dead husband and starving children. Those who did write articles from home kept it to themselves. Few admitted they wrote for a living. Women who tried to have both marriage and a career flirted with disaster.2 The professional woman of the period was usually educated, single, and middle or upper class. -
