2008 International Space Development Conference Demonstrates Spirit of Cooperation in Face of Imminent Change Announcements on New Programs, Market Studies, and Space Research Mark the 'New Pace of Space' FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Washington D.C. - (June 4, 2008) - The National Space Society's (NSS) 27th Annual International Space Development Conference (ISDC) brought together leaders and supporters of the civil space program and the emerging commercial space sector last week to discuss the state of the industry and inform the general public of future space efforts. ISDC, produced and hosted by the National Space Society, is a global forum for anyone with an interest in space to learn, interact, and discuss the future with the leaders of space exploration, business, and science. The four-day conference, held in a different city each year, has become known as a leading nexus between NASA programs and the emerging commercial space industry. On Wednesday May 28, 2008 the conference kicked off with an exclusive pre-conference event, the 4th Space Investment Summit (SIS), which brought together the emerging commercial space industry with the established world of finance to exchange their goals, ideas, and advice. Investors and established aerospace firms heard business plans from some of the most exciting new companies in space-related business sectors, while expert panels discussed important issues like exit strategies for aerospace startups, as well as early and mid-stage financing. Will Whitehorn, President of Sir Richard Branson's private space tourism company Virgin Galactic, keynoted the opening session of ISDC with a positive report on the developmental progress of WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo. -

That policy needs to be acted upon, and with sufficient funding, neither of which are guaranteed. “Policy follows money, but sometimes authorization bills matter, and certainty the recent NASA authorization bill matters quite a lot,” said Jim Muncy, president of PoliSpace, during a panel session about space policy at the International Symposium for Personal and Commercial Spaceflight in Las Cruces, New Mexico, last month. Aerospace Industry Review Paper Canadian Space Society Introduction In 1962, Canada became the third country in space with the launch of Alouette-1. Since then, Canada has had a proud history of significant contributions in science and technology through space research and development. In 1967, the Chapman Report provided a series of recommendations that helped guide Canada’s original focus and investments in space technology. The Chapman Report also provided a practical plan that outlined how space can address the areas of greatest need for Canadians. Given our large geographic area and disperse population, satellite communications and remote sensing (including space-based earth observation) was, and still is, a practical and cost effective means to address Canada’s needs. As such, space technology has helped Canadians stay connected, coast to coast to coast, and has given us a higher vantage point to monitor our large country. In addition, research and development into space technology has provided us the Canadarm, an iconic symbol of Canada’s innovative and imaginative ability. 50-years have now passed since the launch of Aloutte-1 and Canada’s space program is at a crossroads. The global community has yet to chart a course for space exploration and NASA has ended its Space Shuttle program. India and China have entered the space arena with significant strides in rocketry, satellite manufacturing, human space flight and has set its targets on the Moon. The private sector in the USA has entered the arena providing its own space transportation systems (SpaceX), and is setting ambitious targets to mine space resources (Planetary Resources). -

While the current economic downturn will likely slow industry progress, space tourism, currently in its infancy, is poised to become a significant part of the hospitality industry. Unlike the space race of the 1950s and 1960s between the United States and the former Soviet Union, the current rivalry is not defined on a national level, but by a collection of first-mover entrepreneurs that are working to define the industry and position it for long- term profitability. -

(2011) suggests ‘Social media tools cultivate the internal discussions that improve quality, lower costs, and enable the creation of customer and partner communities that offer new opportunities for coordination, marketing, advertising, and customer support. The paper contends innovation should be added to this and suggested by Beckinsale (2017). It is the importance of the networks, their connections, their value, their availability and the awareness of them that can play a significant role in innovation amongst small firms and technological entrepreneurial firms. Weibel Departments of Anthropology and Integrative, Religious, and Intercultural Studies, Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI 49401, USA; [email protected] Received: 29 November 2019; Accepted: 28 December 2019; Published: 2 January 2020 Abstract: Human spaceflight is likely to change in character over the 21st century, shifting from a military/governmental enterprise to one that is more firmly tied to private industry, including businesses devoted to space tourism. For space tourism to become a reality, however, many obstacles have to be overcome, particularly those in finance, technology, and medicine. Ethnographic interviews with astronauts, engineers, NASA doctors, and NewSpace workers reveal that absolute faith in the eventual human occupation of space, based in religious conviction or taking secular forms, is a common source of motivation across different populations working to promote human spaceflight. This paper examines the way faith is expressed in these different contexts and its role in developing a future where space tourism may become commonplace. Introduction Space tourism is an endeavor, similar to but distinctly different from other forms of space travel, that relies on its participants’ and brokers’ faith that carrying out brave expeditions, modeled on and inspired by those in the past, will ultimately pay off in a better future for humankind. Faith, in this case, refers to a subjective sense that a particular future is guaranteed and may or may not have religious foundations. This faith appears to be heightened by the collective work undertaken by groups endeavoring to send humans into space, creating a sense of what anthropologists Victor and Edith Turner have described as communitas, a shared feeling of equality and common purpose. -

Currently this activity is still in a development session which is better for the future. Thus, the description of space tourism activities is a matter that deserves to be known from history to all of its details and seen from the growth and difficulty in increasing space tourism activities, of course it must be supported by laws or regulations governing space. Not only that, so far there have been space tourists as well as potential space tourists who have departed for this tourism activity. Thus, this space tourism activity is intended to be an activity that can be tried on a regular basis in the future, so that international and national legal arrangements must be well organized, fair and responsible and with regard to the rapid growth of this activity, it’s appropriate for those who participating or having an interest in this activity must be more open in the growth of the activities they are carrying out, so that steps can be taken quickly, it seems like for example, to quickly formulate and ratify a space agreement related to space tourism, protection of parties who participate in activities it's kind of like the private industry. -

AIAA SPACE 2007 Conference & Exposition AIAA 2007-6076 18 - 20 September 2007, Long Beach, California The Globalization of Space – The Astrosociological Approach Marilyn Dudley-Flores* and Thomas Gangale† OPS-Alaska, 2262 Magnolia Avenue, Petaluma, California 94952 USA [Abstract] The primary author coined the phrase “globalization of space” in the 1990s in lectures and presentations, thus the term was conceived in the sociological record. And, though texts and journal articles on sociology are full of studies of the phenomenon of globalization, sociologists are not serious about the study of those aerospatial events that made possible the extent of modern globalization. And, although it is in their purview, they do not keep track of advancements in the aerospace industry that can provide clues to where globalization is taking human societies. On the other hand, the “globalization of space” is referenced by a host of organizations connected to the aerospace community (i.e., NASA, the Air Force Academy, et al.). However, to the reverse of the sociological community, aerospace organizations have little concept of social factors at varying levels of analysis that can provide clues to where human societies are heading in space – a destination that will impact aerospace industries. The authors advocate for taking the astrosociological approach, a merging of social science and aerospace perspectives in order to examine the coming benefits and challenges to the globalization of space.
