Wallington and students in the space tourism development course (winter 2004/ 2005) conducted a space tourism market survey. The target markets for these surveys were comprised of acquaintances (including family) of RIT students who took the space tourism course. Professor Wallington was interested in finding out if the student's families, friends, and acquaintances would want to take a space trip. The survey was comprised of twenty-one questions that focused on gathering demographic information, knowledge of and interest in zero- gravity, suborbital flights, and low earth orbit habitats. The results of this survey were never tallied and analyzed. There is a need for the analysis of this data and further expansion of the original research. The findings of this research helped in identifying market needs and wants with regards to space tourism. It was revealed that the interviewees place great attention to safety, comfort, and health. The results also revealed the preferred potential price for zero-gravity flights, suborbital flights, and visits to low earth orbit (LEO) habitats that this potential market would be willing to pay. Chapter 1 1.1 Background Space tourism is tourism oriented to space and space travel. The beginnings of space tourism started in 1950s when the Hayden Planetarium in New York started booking people for space flights to the Moon. In the 1960s, Pan American Airlines began booking people for the trip to the Moon. The team from Society Expeditions travel agency first developed the term "space tourism" in 1980s. (Berinstein, 2002, pg. 32 and 33) There are currently 4 categories of space tourism: terrestrial space tourism, high altitude, suborbital and orbital. Orbital space tourism era started with Dennis Tito who became the first space tourist in 2001. Mark Shuttleworth became the second space tourist in the year 2002. (Space Adventures) Greg Olsen became the third space tourist in October 2005. Anousheh Ansari, an American female of Iranian descent, became the fourth space tourist in September 2006. (Wikipedia, 2006) tourist" She also became the first "female space (Pasztor, 2006, p. B.l). Today, orbital space tourism stands for the leisure trips to the International Space Stations (ISS). (Space Adventures) 20th The century has been marked with great technological achievements in the field of rocketry. These achievements enabled the start of space flights in 1950s (NASA/JPL, The Solar System).

Since then, Canada has had a proud history of significant contributions in science and technology through space research and development. In 1967, the Chapman Report provided a series of recommendations that helped guide Canada’s original focus and investments in space technology. The Chapman Report also provided a practical plan that outlined how space can address the areas of greatest need for Canadians. Given our large geographic area and disperse population, satellite communications and remote sensing (including space-based earth observation) was, and still is, a practical and cost effective means to address Canada’s needs. As such, space technology has helped Canadians stay connected, coast to coast to coast, and has given us a higher vantage point to monitor our large country. In addition, research and development into space technology has provided us the Canadarm, an iconic symbol of Canada’s innovative and imaginative ability. 50-years have now passed since the launch of Aloutte-1 and Canada’s space program is at a crossroads. The global community has yet to chart a course for space exploration and NASA has ended its Space Shuttle program. India and China have entered the space arena with significant strides in rocketry, satellite manufacturing, human space flight and has set its targets on the Moon. For space tourism to become a reality, however, many obstacles have to be overcome, particularly those in finance, technology, and medicine. Ethnographic interviews with astronauts, engineers, NASA doctors, and NewSpace workers reveal that absolute faith in the eventual human occupation of space, based in religious conviction or taking secular forms, is a common source of motivation across different populations working to promote human spaceflight. This paper examines the way faith is expressed in these different contexts and its role in developing a future where space tourism may become commonplace. Not only that, so far there have been space tourists as well as potential space tourists who have departed for this tourism activity. Thus, this space tourism activity is intended to be an activity that can be tried on a regular basis in the future, so that international and national legal arrangements must be well organized, fair and responsible and with regard to the rapid growth of this activity, it’s appropriate for those who participating or having an interest in this activity must be more open in the growth of the activities they are carrying out, so that steps can be taken quickly, it seems like for example, to quickly formulate and ratify a space agreement related to space tourism, protection of parties who participate in activities it's kind of like the private industry.

    AIAA SPACE 2007 Conference & Exposition AIAA 2007-6076 18 - 20 September 2007, Long Beach, California The Globalization of Space – The Astrosociological Approach Marilyn Dudley-Flores* and Thomas Gangale† OPS-Alaska, 2262 Magnolia Avenue, Petaluma, California 94952 USA [Abstract] The primary author coined the phrase “globalization of space” in the 1990s in lectures and presentations, thus the term was conceived in the sociological record. And, though texts and journal articles on sociology are full of studies of the phenomenon of globalization, sociologists are not serious about the study of those aerospatial events that made possible the extent of modern globalization. And, although it is in their purview, they do not keep track of advancements in the aerospace industry that can provide clues to where globalization is taking human societies. On the other hand, the “globalization of space” is referenced by a host of organizations connected to the aerospace community (i.e., NASA, the Air Force Academy, et al.). However, to the reverse of the sociological community, aerospace organizations have little concept of social factors at varying levels of analysis that can provide clues to where human societies are heading in space – a destination that will impact aerospace industries. The authors advocate for taking the astrosociological approach, a merging of social science and aerospace perspectives in order to examine the coming benefits and challenges to the globalization of space.
