Loire Valley
PREVIEWCOPY Introduction Previewing this guidebook? If you are previewing this guidebook in advance of purchase, please check out our enhanced preview, which will give you a deeper look at this guidebook. Wine guides for the ultra curious, Approach Guides take an in-depth look at a wine region’s grapes, appellations and vintages to help you discover wines that meet your preferences. The Loire Valley — featuring a compelling line-up of distinctive grape varieties, high quality winemaking and large production volumes — is home to some of France’s most impressive wines. Nevertheless, it remains largely overlooked by the international wine drinking public. This makes the region a treasure trove of exceptional values, just waiting to be discovered. What’s in this guidebook • Grape varieties. We describe the Loire’s primary red and white grape varieties and where they reach their highest expressions. • Vintage ratings. We offer a straightforward vintage ratings table, which affords high-level insight into the best and most challenging years for wine production. • A Loire Valley wine label. We explain what to look for on a Loire Valley wine label and what it tells you about what’s in the bottle. • Map and appellation profiles. Leveraging our map of the region, we provide detailed pro- files of appellations from all five of the Loire’s sub-regions (running from west to east): Pays Nantais, Anjou, Saumur, Touraine and Central Vineyards. For each appellation, we describe the prevailing terroir, the types of wine produced and what makes them distinctive. • A distinctive approach. This guidebook’s approach is unique: rather than tell you what specific bottle of wine to order by providing individual bottle reviews, it gives the information you need to make informed wine choices on any list. -

TRIBUNE Renault Alliance – Club Passion

HOW DO WE FEEL ABOUT NATURAL WINE? We Drink, Breathe, and Sleep Thinking About the History of the Humble Grape and Its Importance in the World
HOW DO WE FEEL ABOUT NATURAL WINE? We drink, breathe, and sleep thinking about the history of the humble grape and its importance in the world. Kinda a lot of pressure for a fermented beverage, but we know Wine can handle it. We’ve gone all in on natural wine because we believe in celebrating farmers and other stewards of the land who work tirelessly to create biodiverse landscapes. Think of wine as a transmitter of a certain place and time in history: if made with nothing but grapes, a bottle has the ability to tell us what the soil in the vineyard is composed of, what the weather was like in a given vintage, and what the surrounding flora and fauna are doing. Cover it up with any number of 60-plus legal chemical additives, and what are you left with? Something engineered that no longer transmits its story. There is no official definition of what natural wine is. But we have our definition, and here’s our promise: every wine on this list is grown organically or biodynamically, free of any chemicals in the vineyard. Every wine on this list is made without any additives except sulfur, which is naturally occurring in grapes. Every wine on this list is fermented with its own living, wild yeast. And every wine on this list is made in small, or very small, amounts. It’s difficult to find fault with any of that. We love these wines and the people behind them, and we hope you do too. Corkage: $20 per 750ml not on our list, limit 2 bottles per party. -
Addendum Regarding: the 2020 Certified Specialist of Wine Study Guide, As Published by the Society of Wine Educators
Addendum regarding: The 2020 Certified Specialist of Wine Study Guide, as published by the Society of Wine Educators This document outlines the substantive changes to the 2020 Study Guide as compared to the 2019 version of the CSW Study Guide. All page numbers reference the 2019 version. Note: Many of our regional wine maps have been updated. The new maps are available on SWE’s blog, Wine, Wit, and Wisdom, at the following address: http://winewitandwisdomswe.com/wine-spirits- maps/swe-maps-2020/ Page 12: the second paragraph concerning phenolics and polymerization was updated to read as follows: Over time, some phenolic compounds, particularly tannins and pigments, tend to polymerize, or combine into longer molecule chains. These chains may eventually become too heavy to stay suspended in the liquid and may drop out of the solution as sediment. This development has a major impact on the flavor of the wine and is one of the main results of the aging process. In many cases, the production of sediment in a properly-aged red wine renders a wine lighter in color and less astringent. However, it should be noted that new research indicates that polymerized tannins can possibly continue to alter in structure and may eventually break down during extended aging; thus is may be impossible to predict how the tannins in a well-aged wine will be perceived by the taster. Page 84: The statistics concerning the world wine production and trade have been updated as follows: • The global volume of wine produced in 2018 is estimated at 292 million hectoliters (mhl), the equivalent of nearly 3.2 billion cases of wine. -
