Annual review 2013 Page 3 History ...He (Mr. Burckhard Schweinberger) arrived to Entebbe on his first visit to Uganda, On his way to Namutamba, he was very surprised to find a third world country with all the problems (known to him) third world countries face but seemingly no one was physically affected, This prompted him to ask the people of such a luck that none was really disabled even by Polio or Malar- ia. To his grief, responses were that; communities did not see any value in disabled person, they were seen more less like unfortunate fallers /”unloved animals”,, who were therefore, hidden or neglected and that, therefore, few families with such children gave them freedom of edu.cation, food play or even relationship. Some families could not handle the shame and humiliation from the communities and therefore, hiding such children was the solution. He was told that they are tied on pegs inside the huts or behind houses so as to prevent the community from recognising their presence. He had come to help construct a ward with GMMT and during the time he was here , he could barely count a few of those he saw with minor disabilities. He realised that it was often that others made fun of them. This stirred up his heart, he felt the pain that PWDs could be going through as Therefore my people are they lived in such a state of uselessness and he painfully asked God to help gone into captivities, him do something that could liberate some of them-that at least the light of Jesus could shine to them first………… because they have no He did and completed his work with GMMT and then went back to Germany knowledge; and their leaving his heart in Uganda for the children with disabilities. honorable men are In 1993 Mr. Burckhard returned to Uganda and started the construction in a famished and their land that was donated to him by a well wisher (The late Absolom Damulira). He completed the building in1995 and officially opened the home under the multitude dried up with named ‘The Light of Jesus for Handicapped children’, It was opened by the thirst. then Vice President of Uganda, the late Dr. Samson Kisseka. King James version(1611) Children with disabilities were brought to the Center and cared for and were Isaiah 5:13 taken to Mulago for surgery where they stayed until they got better. They then came to the Center for Physiotherapy. He mainly did the work with his family and help of some few friends. With time the work became to much for him and he faced financial constraints that he realised he was not able to go on. In his grief and prayer, he asked God who had began the work through him to hold the work up to its accomplishment. God led him to Neukirchener Mis- sion, which then took over in 1998. The Mission began sending volunteers and other persons to work with the Center especially in leadership and medical areas till now. Other programs such as awareness/sensitisation, post operation care, Occu- pational Therapy, outreach, follow up and treatment of Epilepsy were also initiated. The name of the Center was then changed to Namutamba Rehabilitation Cen- ter for Children. Children are being admitted with their parents to learn how to involve and care for children with disabilities in their homes. Partnership programmes begun and cost sharing with other partners and indi- viduals also begun. We are so thank full to God for the far the Center has gone to improve the lives of children with disabilities in Ugandan communities, and for people who envisioned such occurrences.
