ABSTRACT OF GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH A Project Report Andrews University Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary Title: AN APPROACH TO A HOLISTIC MINISTRY IN A SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST URBAN CHURCH IN UGANDA Name of Researcher: Nathaniel Mumbere Walemba Name and degree of faculty Adviser: Norman Miles, Ph.D. Date completed: August 1988 Problem The SDA church in Uganda started in rural areas among rural people. But the situation has changed. Although the majority of the church membership nationwide is still rural, a large percentage is now urban in the real sense of the word. Moreover, it is estimated that by the year 2000, membership in city churches will have doubled. This urbanised membership requires an urbanized approach to ministry. Furthermore, as in any devoloping country, Ugandan urba nites have many needs which can be met onlyby a holistic approach to ministry. Method A description of ministry is made to create a better concept of ministry. Also an attempt is made to investigate the current pattern of ministry. Questionnaires were used to help determine the strength and weakness of the present approach. Based on the analysis of these instruments, suggestions are made for possible improvement. These recommendations are informed by the current literature on urban ministry, the researcher's understanding of biblical ministry, and his personal experience as a minister in the country under study. Results The study shows that the Bible teaches a holistic approach to the ministry (diakonia) of the church. It is the method Christ used. But there seems to be a deficient concept of biblical ministry, especially as it relates to non-spiritual needs. The needs that exist require creative leadership and total mobilization of all church members. The study reveals that the latter is presently a difficult task. Moreover, there is a possibility that the pastors do not have the skills and tools needed to train and moblize the lay people for ministry. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. Conclusion Investigation shows that several things must be done to effect a holistic urban ministry in the SDA churches in Uganda. First, there must be a better understanding of ministry. Pastors and members alike must understand that ministry is inclusive of every service that positively affects every aspect of human life. Second, church members (lay people) must be helped to realize that they too have a part to play in the servanthood of the church and to do it. Third, both pastors and lay people must be trained to enable them to play their respective roles in a way that is rewarding to them and beneficial to their community of faith and the larger community around them.     Adventists and Ecumenical Conversation Ángel Manuel Rodríguez The Seventh-day Adventist Church does not exist in isolation from other Christian communities. Social and religious trends in the Christian world impact us; they force us to decide how we should relate to those trends and changes. The Christian concern about the unity of the church, voiced particularly through the World Council of Churches, forces us to define where we stand on this important subject. Certainly, “no Adventist can be opposed to the unity Christ Himself prayed for.”1 This article looks at the nature of Seventh-day Adventist involvement in the search for unity among Christians, as well as the doctrinal and theological parameters within which we operate in that search. It also briefly discusses the risks and benefits present in the conversations with other Christian bodies. Our hope is that the ideas expressed here will be useful to Adventist ministers who interact with non-Adventist clergy at a more personal level, as well as a help to our pastors as they answer some of the concerns that church members might have regarding these conversations. Adventist identity and ecumenical dialogues The Adventist Church has occasionally had conversations with other Christian communities and even participated with them in special activities (such as the matter of the promotion of religious liberty throughout the world). We have entered into those conversations with some apprehension, while at the same time acknowledging their need, usefulness, and importance. What are our concerns as we deal with interfaith relations and dialogues? The church has not been quiet about that question.

Lind, Magdalon Eugen (1910–1985) and Kezia (1909–2013) YONA BALYAGE, AND NATHANIEL MUMBERE WALEMBA Yona Balyage, Ph.D. in education (Central Luzon State University, Philippines), is a professor in Educational Administration and Management. He serves as director of Quality Assurance at the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, Eldoret, Kenya. He has also served as department head and school dean at the same university. He is married to Eseza and they have three children. Nathaniel Mumbere Walemba, D.Min. (Andrews University, Berrien Spring, Michigan U.S.A.), retired in 2015 as executive secretary of the East-Central Africa Division (ECD) of Seventh-day Adventists. In retirement, he is assistant editor of this encyclopedia for ECD. A Ugandan by birth, Walemba has served the Seventh-day Adventist Church in many capacities having started as a teacher, a frontline pastor, and principal of Bugema Adventist College in Uganda. He has authored several magazine articles and a chapter, “The Experience of Salvation and Spiritualistic Manifestations,” in Kwabena Donkor, ed.The Church, Culture and Spirits (Hagerstown, MD: Review and Herald Publishing Association, 2011), pp. 133-143. He is married to Ruth Kugonza and they have six children and fourteen grandchildren. Referred to as “God’s Angel to Mount Rwenzori,” Magdalon Eugen (M. E.) Lind, along with his wife Kezia, were pioneer missionaries of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to the Rwenzori1 Mountains2 in western Uganda. He was a pastor, director, president, fluent speaker of several African languages, fundraiser, and a generous donor.
