Hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae) provide crucial ecological services and are increasingly used as bioindicators in environ- mental assessment studies. Information is available for a wide range of life history traits at the species level for most Syrphidae but little is recorded about the environmental requirements of forest hoverflies at the stand scale. The aim of this study was to explore whether the structural heterogeneity of a stand influences species richness or abundance of hoverflies in a montane beech-fir forest. We used the catches of Malaise traps set in 2004 and 2007 in three stands in the French Pyrenees, selected to represent a wide range of structural heterogeneity in terms of their vertical structure, tree diversity, deadwood and tree-microhabitats. -

Dipterists Forum Hoverfly Newsletter Number 47 Autumn 2009 ISSN 1358-5029 I thank the contributors to this newsletter, particularly Roger Morris, without whom this issue would have been a rather thin one. In the first sentence of the recording scheme update he and Stuart Ball have clearly rated 2009 as so far yet another disappointing year. Yet my experience of this year has been somewhat different as, although I have not found hoverflies to be abundant, I have seen an excellent diversity of species. During 2009 to date I have seen two species I had never seen before (Dasysyrphus friuliensis and Myolepta dubia) and the hoverfly species list for my garden has increased by four. International interest in hoverflies continues to grow as witnessed by the completion of yet another successful international sympo- sium (the fifth). In Roger’s write up of this year’s event he refers to two newly-published books on hoverflies. I can recall that when I began recording the only reference work I had was a photocopy of R. L. Coe’s out-of-print key. This was supplemented in 1969 by a reprint of Verrall’s book, to be followed in 1981 by van der Goot’s Zweefvliegen.and in 1983 by the first edition of British Hoverflies. How things have changed since then! Once I have obtained copies of the two new books I shall have at least seventeen hoverfly books on my shelves. Articles and illustrations (including colour images) for the next newsletter are always welcome. The Fauna of Hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae) of Vojvodina Province, Serbia

VUJIĆ, SMILJKA ŠIMIĆ, and SNEŽANA RADENKOVIĆ Department of Biology and Ecology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Novi Sad, 21000 Novi Sad, Serbia Abstract — Many hoverfly species of faunal and zoogeographical interest are found in Serbia’s northern province of Vojvodina due to the diversity of its biotopes. In this paper, the presence of 252 species of hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae) from 69 genera is documented. Five species are here recorded for the first time in Serbia: Anasimyia contracta Claussen & Torp Pedersen, 1980; Anasimyia transfuga (Linnaeus, 1758); Eristalinus megacephalus (Rossi, 1794); Helophilus hybridus Loew, 1846; and Mallota fuciformis (Fabricius, 1794). One species is recorded for the first time in Vojvodina: Cheilosia brunnipennis (Becker, 1894). The records of 12 species from Vojvodina Province are the only ones on the Balkan Peninsula, while the records of 15 species are the only ones in Serbia. In recent years, agroecosystems have seen the introduction of 2nd generation bioenergy crops in order to tackle anthropogenic climate change, providing a renewable alternative to fossil fuels.
