We’ll be focusing on objects you can see with binoculars or a small telescope, so after our session, you can simply walk outside, look up, and understand what you’re looking at. CCAS President Aurora Lipper and astronomer Kent Wallace will bring you a virtual “tour of the night sky” where you can discover, learn, and ask questions as we go along! (Mirametrics) What are Messier Objects? • Messier objects are a list of astronomical sources compiled by Charles Messier, an 18th and early 19th century astronomer. He created a list of distracting objects to avoid while comet hunting. This list now contains over 110 objects, many of which are the most famous astronomical bodies known. The list contains planetary nebula, star clusters, and other galaxies. - Bobby Martinez The Telescope The telescope used to take these images is an Astronomical Consultants and Equipment (ACE) 24- inch (0.61-meter) Ritchey-Chretien reflecting telescope. It has a focal ratio of F6.2 and is supported on a structure independent of the building that houses it. It is equipped with a Finger Lakes 1kx1k CCD camera cooled to -30o C at the Cassegrain focus. It is equipped with dual filter wheels, the first containing UBVRI scientific filters and the second RGBL color filters. Messier 1 Found 6,500 light years away in the constellation of Taurus, the Crab Nebula (known as M1) is a supernova remnant. The original supernova that formed the crab nebula was observed by Chinese, Japanese and Arab astronomers in 1054 AD as an incredibly bright “Guest star” which was visible for over twenty-two months. The supernova that produced the Crab Nebula is thought to have been an evolved star roughly ten times more massive than the Sun. -

Whirlpools and pinwheels on the sky Domingos Soares Galaxies exist in many different forms and count by, at least, the hundreds of billions, according to estimations made from the observations of the Hubble Space Telescope. Among all of them, there are no doubts that the most spectacular are the so-called \spiral galaxies". Our own galaxy, the Milky Way galaxy, is a member of that family. Spiral galaxies are so named because of the distinctive aspect they present to the observer, namely, of a spiral-shaped structure similar to a whirlpool or a pinwheel. They are also called \disk galaxies" because the galactic material | stars, gas and interstellar dust | is distributed in the shape of a \thick" disk. The stars constitute the main constituents of galaxies, at least with respect to their visual appearance. They emit the major part of the visible light of a galaxy, be it a spiral or not. The typical visual aspect of spiral galaxies is due to the structures that astronomers call \spiral arms". The most bright stars of a galaxy are those that delineate the arms. These, however, contribute little to the total mass of the galaxy, but due to their extraordinary brightness they are the most noticeable on a visual inspection. The spiral galaxy disks rotate. And this is typical in those galaxies: the galactic material spins around the disk center, which is called \galactic center". But the rotation is not like the spin of a rigid disk, like, for example, a CD, in which all the points make a full turn in the same time interval. -

Feb 14 Garden Stars 7-8:30PM LOOKING UP! a message from the president Norfolk Botanical Gardens This month’s most talked about astronomy event has to be the total lunar Feb 16 Saturday Sun-day eclipse. The BBAA participated by supporting the Watch Party at the 10AM-1PM Chesapeake Planetarium. Anyone in attendance will tell you it was COLD, but Elizabeth River Park manageable if you wore layers, utilized the planetarium where Dr. Robert Hitt seemed to have the thermostat set to 100 degrees, and drank copious amounts Feb 23 Skywatch of the hot coffee that Kent Blackwell brewed in the back office. 6PM-10PM The event had a huge following on Facebook but with the cold Northwest River Park temperatures, we weren’t sure how many would come out. By Kent’s estimate there were between 100–200 people in attendance. Many club members set up telescopes, as well as a few members of the public too. -

GALAXIES WHAT ARE THE DEEP SKY OBJECTS? •Deep-sky objects are astronomical objects other than individual stars and solar system objects (Sun, Moon, planets, comets). TYPES OF DEEP SKY OBJECTS •Nebulae •Clusters •Galaxies CHARLES MESSIER • Known for the Messier catalogue of galaxies, nebulae and star clusters M1 to M110 • He was a French astronomer who lived in the 18th century. • He was a comet hunter and the purpose of the catalogue was to record the sky objects that looked as comets but were not comets because they would not move in the sky. UNITS TO MEASURE DISTANCE • A Light-year is the distance that light travels in a year with a speed of approximately 300,000 kilometers per second • Closest star to the Sun is Proxima Centauri at 4.37 light years. • A Parsec is the equal to about 3.26 light years GALAXIES • A galaxy is an enormous collection of gas, dust and billions of stars held together by gravity. One galaxy can have hundreds of billions of stars and be as large as 200,000 light years across. • Galaxy is derived from the Greek galaxias meaning "milky", a reference to the Milky Way. • Many galaxies are believed to have black holes at their active center. The Milky Way's central black hole, known as Sagittarius A, has a mass four million times that of our Sun. GALAXIES FACTS • There are potentially more than 170 billion galaxies in the observable universe. Some, called dwarf galaxies, are very small with about 10 million stars, while others are huge containing an estimated 100 trillion stars. -

Public Star Party Follows at the It’s that time of year when obstacles appear in the sky. In particular, this year is Centennial Obs. loaded with fog. It got in the way of letting us see the dance of the Jovian moons late last month, and it’s hindered our views of other unique shows. Still, members Club Officers reported finding enough of a clear sky to let us see Comet Lovejoy, and some great photos by members are popping up on the Facebook page. Robert Mayer, President This month, however, is a great opportunity to see the benefit of something [email protected] getting in the way. Our own Chris Anderson of the Herrett Center has been using 208-312-1203 the Centennial Observatory’s scope to do work on occultation’s, particularly with asteroids. This month’s MVAS meeting on Feb. 14th will give him the stage to Terry Wofford, Vice President show us just how this all works. [email protected] The following weekend may also be the time the weather allows us to resume 208-308-1821 MVAS-only star parties. Feb. 21 is a great window for a possible star party; we’ll announce the location if the weather permits. However, if we don’t get that Gary Leavitt, Secretary window, we’ll fall back on what has become a MVAS tradition: Planetarium night [email protected] at the Herrett Center. -
A Basic Requirement for Studying the Heavens Is Determining Where In
Abasic requirement for studying the heavens is determining where in the sky things are. To specify sky positions, astronomers have developed several coordinate systems. Each uses a coordinate grid projected on to the celestial sphere, in analogy to the geographic coordinate system used on the surface of the Earth. The coordinate systems differ only in their choice of the fundamental plane, which divides the sky into two equal hemispheres along a great circle (the fundamental plane of the geographic system is the Earth's equator) . Each coordinate system is named for its choice of fundamental plane. The equatorial coordinate system is probably the most widely used celestial coordinate system. It is also the one most closely related to the geographic coordinate system, because they use the same fun damental plane and the same poles. The projection of the Earth's equator onto the celestial sphere is called the celestial equator. Similarly, projecting the geographic poles on to the celest ial sphere defines the north and south celestial poles. However, there is an important difference between the equatorial and geographic coordinate systems: the geographic system is fixed to the Earth; it rotates as the Earth does . The equatorial system is fixed to the stars, so it appears to rotate across the sky with the stars, but of course it's really the Earth rotating under the fixed sky. The latitudinal (latitude-like) angle of the equatorial system is called declination (Dec for short) . It measures the angle of an object above or below the celestial equator. The longitud inal angle is called the right ascension (RA for short). -

The Moon: Our Neighbor Culpeper Astronomy Club Meeting February 26, 2018 Overview • Introductions • Radio Astronomy: The Basics • The Moon • Constellations: Monoceros, Canis Major, Puppis • Observing Session (Tentative) Radio Astronomy • Stars, galaxies and gas clouds emit visible light as well as emissions from other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum • Includes radio waves, gamma rays, X- rays, and infrared radiation • Radio astronomy is the study of the universe through analysis of celestial objects' radio emission • the longest-wavelength, least energetic form of radiation on the electromagnetic spectrum • The first detection of radio waves from an astronomical object was in 1932 • Karl Jansky at Bell Telephone Laboratories observed radiation coming from the Milky Way Radio Astronomy • A radio telescope has three basic components: • One or more antennas pointed to the sky, to collect the radio waves • A receiver and amplifier to boost the very weak radio signal to a measurable level, and • A recorder to keep a record of the signal Radio Astronomy • Subsequent observations have identified a number of different sources of radio emission • Include stars and galaxies, as well as entirely new classes of objects, such as: • Radio galaxies: nuclei emit jets of high- velocity gas (near the speed of light) above and below the galaxy -- the jets interact with magnetic fields and emit radio signals • Quasars: distant objects powered by black holes a billion times as massive as our sun • Pulsars: the rapidly spinning remnants of supernova explosions -

Acknowledgements The inspiration for this meeting arose several years ago when two of us (Mark Bailey [Armagh Observatory] and Albert White [Irish Light Pollution Awareness Campaign]) attended the very well organized Sixth European Symposium for the Protection of the Night Sky, held in Portsmouth, England, from 15–16 September 2006. We are very grateful for the support of the organizers of that meeting in the present arrangements, and for the provision of leaflets and other material supplied courtesy of the British Astronomical Association Campaign for Dark Skies (CfDS). GRAIL Reveals Secrets of the Lunar Interior — Dr. Patrick J. McGovern, Lunar and Planetary Institute A mini-flotilla of spacecraft sent to the Moon in the past few years by several nations has revealed much about the characteristics of the lunar surface via techniques such as imaging, spectroscopy, and laser ranging. While the achievements of these missions have been impressive, only GRAIL has seen deeply enough to reveal inner secrets that the Moon holds.
