Images: Lunch at the Ambassadeur Hotel

On Sunday 7 June, the Rector took his last services in the Parish Church. His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor attended the main service after which we all moved to the Parish Hall for coffee and a splendid cake that had a picture of St Saviour's Church on top. Finally, approximately 80 Parishioners and friends attended a lunch at the Ambassadeur Hotel at the end of which we were presented with a picture of St Saviour's Church, a silver spoon with the crest of the Parish at the top and other gifts including garden tokens. We do thank all who contributed to these most sincerely. All of these will be much treasured.

After all of this - which was quite a 'rite of passage' - there is no going back and we went over to Wales to get our house ready for the main move in July. Once back from this we have been busy clearing the Rectory of the accumulated paperwork, etc., covering not only our 24-years here but also the previous 17- years in parishes/posts in England. A daunting task (memo to self: resist the temptation to hoard!) For those of us brought up in the post- war years with the mantra ‘it might come in handy’, this is not easy. Countryfile on BBC1 on 23 August was filmed in our part of Powys. If you saw it (or can catch it on BBC iPlayer), you will have discovered something of the vast rural county with its low population density and strong community spirit. We have been made very welcome by the locals but living there will be a big change for us and we shall think of you all often. If you are in the area do let us know (contact [email protected]). With our thanks and very good wishes. StSaviour-Autumn-2015-06.qxp_Governance style ideas 11/09/2015 15:06 Page 10

p10 Autumn2015 St Saviour Parish Magazine Ninetieth birthdayof Mervyn Renouf Billot

By Cara Billot-Miller

My father, Mervyn Renouf Billot, will celebrate 90 years of life in Jersey on 14 September 2015. He was born in 1925, in , and remembers the trains running on the Eastern Railway and the trains runnin g out west, until those train companies closed in 1929 and 1936. There have been tremendous changes in Jersey over those 90 years and equally tremendous changes in family and social life, which will have affected us all, one way or another. Most certainly, agriculture and horticulture has had to adopt and adapt to many changes throughout the decades.

My father was born into a Jersey farming family, and La Porte had been a working farm for many generations, not just dairy Above: Mervyn meeting Princess Anne farming and breeding Jersey cows, but also Below: Astride his father’s Ferguson tractor in 1937 growing potatoes, tomatoes, and flowers, e.g. gladioli and daffodils. There were pigs, at one time, and my father used to look after the pigs and save his pocket omoney t buy a bicycle. I have fond childhood memories of the cows in the yard and the small diary unit, and stalls for the farm horses, and the cider press. Then came the war and my father was evacuated to Bedford College together with other boys from Victoria College. When he left school in 1943, he joined the Royal Navy for the remainder of the war and was demobbed in 1945. Autumn2015 St Saviour Parish Magazine p11 Your Parish needs you – now …in the St Saviour Honorary Police The days are gone when the ‘honoraries’ were summoned from the fields to deal with anything from a homicide to a lost cat. Today’s force is instructed in professional police procedures as well as first aid, security and safety, and taught to utilise and operate sophisticated policing equipment.

Duties take into account work and home life commitments and enable Honorary Police Offices to plan a balance between private life and honorary service. St Saviour’s Honorary Police exist to provide support to the community with full police powers. The demands on an officer are quite simply defined. Applicants must be between the ages of 20 and 65. There is a probationary period and full training and insurance cover is provided. A full driving licence is preferred but not essential. Honorary Police Officers must live in the parish they serve, although it is possible to retain an appointment if they move outside that parish. If you can work as part of a team and want to do something for your community that matters please contact St Saviour’s Parish Hall for more information. Twinning trip to Combourg A sunny morning in early June saw a coachload of St Sauveurais heading south out of the ferry terminal, after a pleasant crossing on Condor Rapide from Jersey to Saint-Malo. The trip had been organised by our Jumelage Committee and the first destination was Combourg, labelled as one of Les Petites Cités de Caractère of Brittany.

Combourg is described as the ‘cradle of Romanticism’ in French literature as the French writer François-René de Chateaubriand spent part of his youth in his family's castle, the Château de Combourg, whose turrets still shine in the bright sunlight. His statue was visible near the coach park. Lunch was enjoyed at the Hotel du Lac, which has panoramic windows looking over the blue waters. We were joined here by six more familiar Parish faces, the Le Herissier s, Iltons and Olivers, who were travelling independently. After an excellent lunch and a few minutes for photographs near the hotel, the coach took us on a rural route back towards Saint-Malo, stopping at the well-known Carrefour hypermarket where most of the party managed to stock up on French goodies before heading for the ferry home. It is hoped that the Twinning Association will visit the Cancale region next year. StSaviour-Autumn-2015-06.qxp_Governance style ideas 11/09/2015 15:06 Page 14

Autumn2015 St Saviour Parish Magazine p15 Hereand there in our Parish By Tony Scott-Warren It has been fascinating over the summer to see the progress made by the archaeologists as they uncover more of the history of St Saviour in the Ice Age. However, we can uncover some details of what things were like in the more recent past through the names of places as we pass around the Parish.

I’ve been looking at road names in the area where the Ice Age dig has been taking place – Les Varines. In Jèrriais this is written Les Vathinnes, and the word, which was said by Dr Frank Le Maistre to be most common in St Saviour and Grouville, means heavy or wet land. However, looking at the road that winds up from Longueville to Bagatelle, the land doesn’t fit the description – I wonder if it was called Les Vathinnes in a tongue-in-cheek way... For such a hilly parish it’s surprising that we have only three or four road names which feature the word Val (valley) or the plural version Vaux. One of them is Le Val Aumet where a track goes from the bend on Les Varines along to the north of Longueville Manor. Our Place Names Dictionary says that the meaning of Aumet (sometimes written Aumé) is uncertain, but points out that in around 1135AD, the Jersey-born poet Maitre If we carry on eastwards, we get to La Rue du Tapon, which is named Wace used aunée, meaning to gather a flock together and that after Le Tapon House. p24 Autumn2015 St Saviour Parish Magazine Eune cotte à couochons – a pigsty! Par Tony Scott Warren I was pondering what to write about, and with inspiration in short supply, it was suggested that I should be contrast global events, with bombs, disasters, financial turmoil and inhumanity with our need for an anchor in our lives, explaining the interest in local history and heritage. I was pondering what to write about, and with inspiration in short supply, it was suggested that I should be contrast global events, with bombs, disasters, financial turmoil and inhumanity with our need for an anchor in our lives, explaining the interest in local history and heritage. However as I was getting my head round this, I drove past eune fèrme – a farm - when I was struck by an alterna tive – pigs! Pigs are amazing in so many ways, but from a Jèrriais point of view, they merit an article all to themselves! If you speak French, you will know their word for a pig is un cochon. To get to the Jèrriais word, we need to start with a rounder sound, so we say un couochon – except we shouldn’t, as it is considered rather bad taste. We could write it as un c*£%chon to avoid using such a rude word in public, but that leaves us with a pronunciation problem... What people used to call the poor creature instead was eune bête à saie – a beast with bristles, un annima – an animal, un p’tit moussieu – a little gentleman or un quétot – a pig, but not such a rude word as un c*£%chon! If you had to use the word, you should excuse yourself by afterwards adding respé vouot’ honneu – with due respect. Naturally, the farming community would be likely to use earthy terminology when they took their piglets to La Faithe à p’tits couochons, the fair which took place on Saturdays until around 1957. Polite people called it La Faithe à p’tits annimaux, which could confuse visitors who wanted a puppy, kitten, calf or foal. A sow or female pig was called eune trie – but here we go again - this word was also t hought to be rude, so could only be uttered in a low voice, or replaced by eune couoche. If you want to tell someone that they are wasting their time or doing a ridiculous action, you can say ‘Tu mets la selle sus la trie’ – you’re putting the saddle on the sow. Seeing a woman surrounded by her mucky children, people would say ‘Ch’est comme la trie et ses p’tits, respé!’ – ‘it’s like the sow with her pigle ts, with respect!’ In olden times, every part of the pig was used – except the squeak! However, small children were sometimes told that la coue d’couochon – the pig’s tail – would be buried, when it became the root from which piglets would grow! When talking of someone considered worthless, one might say, ‘Il est comme les couochons, respé d’vous; i’ né f’tha d’bein qu’auprès sa mort!’ – he’s like the pigs, with respect; he only does good after he is dead!’ I hope that you managed to follow the thread of this article – if not, ‘Nou n’y comprend ni lard ni couochon!’ ‘One doesn’t understand either pork or pig!’ is a way you can say that it’s all Chinese to you! you break! So for a new conker you would win one point (making your conker a ‘one-er’) but if that conker had five points attached to it already (having won five other games), your conker takes those points as well, making it a ‘six-er’. (For more details on rules, scoring, and tips on how to make your conker stronger, take a look at the Woodlands Junior School webpage about conkers – just search for ‘Woodlands Conkers’ online). Safety It is always an adult’s job to make the hole in a conker. Hold the conker arm’s length away from you and turn your head away when it is your opponent’s turn to strike. Be careful of your opponent’s knuckles when it is your turn! Take aim as carefully as you can. When searching for conkers, remember to be safe near roads and be aware of residents nearby. Always wait for the seed pods to fall – never throw things up into trees to dislodge them. Mums /dads/grannies/grandads will surely remember this game from when they were young so have a go at a family tournament! Have fun! Following Guernsey’s lead The National Trust for Jersey is holding its first conker championship at Grève de Lecq Barracks on Sunday 4 October! Tear the kids away from their iPads and teach them how to play the good old-fashioned way. With a trophy for the victorious ‘conqueror’ and a variety of nostalgic games and activities, this is sure to be a fun trip down memory lane for all the family. Conkers for the main competition will be supplied on the day. Free entry. 11.00am to 4.00pm. Food and refreshments available. More information at www.nationaltrust.je/event/bonkers-for-conkers. p30 Autumn2015 St Saviour Parish Magazine St Saviour Hard at work building the Battle of Flowersnews Senior Float Well...what a battle week that was! From (courtesy JEP) torrential downpours to high winds to thunderstorms, we had them all. This year’s Battle week was certainly one that we will all remember.

The Senior Float was ‘Hot Off the Press’ and was designed for us by Steve Bouchard, on behalf of the , who had approached us at the beginning of the year to help them celebrate their 125 years of publication. Construction has been ongoing since the beginning of the year and the final flower was stuck at 3.30am on Battle day – huge thanks must go to the hearty few who stayed till the bitter end, even with a thunderstorm exploding overhead. The Junior Float was ‘Yabba Dabba Doo’, based on the cartoon ‘The Flintstones’, and was designed by Emma Gavey (aged nine). Being full on enthusiasm and with youth being on their side, the final flower was stuck on at 9.00pm which meant they could go home and relax before the big day – although how much relax ing could be done with that thunder is another matter ! Battle day itself proved also to be a challenge as the rain was still falling – but it never rains on Battle day does it? And the answer to that seems to be no! By lunchtime the rain had stopped and although the sun didn’t quite make its way completely out, it warmed up enough for everyone to enjoy the afternoon. And now for the results…the Senior Float came second in their class but the Juniors certainly showed us how it should be done by winning a total of five awards – first in class, prix decor, junior exhibitors award, carnival atmosphere award and best set piece, all receiving a silver cup - An amazing result for all of their hard work. And now to next year…we are taking a couple of weeks off but have some fundraising events coming up. Our monthly car washes will be on Saturday 12 September and Saturday 3 October at the Parish Depot and at the Parish Hall. We have a family film night on 2October and Halloween Bingo on 30 October. Please keep your eye out around the Parish for our usual boards for further information. Lastly, the Association would like to thank everyone for their support of us either at our fundraising events or by generously giving up their time to help with all parts of the float. Special thanks this year must also go to the Jersey Evening Post for their sponsorship – we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
