IONIAN ISLANDS OF WESTERN GREECE Going into more detail of our proposals for Summer 2018 in Greece, we would like to give you an idea of the many passage possibilities. The countless islands with all their beauty, make Ionian Greece a destination that can offer exciting places to visit without the fear of getting bored. Here are few of our favorite itineraries: 1. CORFU TO CORFU ROUTE A : We sail around Corfu, visiting the stunning coastline of Paleochastrisa, sailing to Paxos and Antipaxos, and then navigate the mainland coast stopping in Parga, Mourtos and other beautiful locations. Returning to Corfu. ROUTE B : It takes us to the north of Corfu to visit the small but beautiful Diapontinie islands of Othoni, Erikoussa and Mathraki. Afterwards we will sail south to Paxos and Antipaxos and then return to Corfu. (Parga may be included as well, time dependent.) ROUTE C : More navigation from Corfu to Lefkas. We move to the west of Lefkas and stop in the lively Fiskardo on Cefalonia. Afterwards we head north-east up the Inland Sea touching Meganisi, Skorpios, the east coast of Lefkas, following the channel returning to Corfu via Paxos. (this is the most classic of routes) 2. CORFU TO ZAKYNTHOS (ZANTE) one way in 1 week (for the round trip allow 2 weeks) - From Corfu, we sail a coastal route, the channel of Lefkada, then descend and touch Meganisi, Fiscardo, Ithaca, west coast of Zakynthos and finish in the south of the island, in the beautiful bay of Laganas, where the turtles nest on the beaches.

We invite you to join us! more information: www.annahiking.nl (31-3-2020) IKWS210I: Selection Corfu Trail off-season (8-day tour from one location) About AnnaHiking and the Corfu Trail In 1991 we visited Greece for the first time. Our love for the country, the culture, the climate, the food, the language and the Greek has grown ever since. We feel at home here and want to communicate this feeling to others. Most people are familiar with the Greek “islands with beautiful beaches”. Many islands also boast a splendid inland with historical paths, ideal for hiking. Corfu is such an island with much more on offer than beaches alone, and we’d love to introduce it to you. The Corfu Trail is only to be hiked as a trekking in May, June, September and October. The reason is the weather and availability of accommodation along the track. We’d like to offer you the possibility to walk some of the Trail also out of this season. This trip is organized by Aperghi Travel, our Greek colleagues on Corfu. They check and maintain the paths, arrange the (luggage) transfers and the on-site support. As self-guided hiker they’ll provide you with the route descriptions and all other necessary information.

DISCOVERY BOOK CHARACTER OF THE DESTINATION Corfu is, with its 590 km², the largest island of the Ionian archipelago. Bordered by the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea, it is both Greek and cosmopolitan. Its Greek name, Kerkyra, comes from a woman named Corcyra, with whom Poseidon was in love and with whom he decided to flee to the island, leaving her with his name. It was also in Corfu that Hercules conceived his son Hyllus before going to THE carry out his work. Over the centuries, the island has attracted sailors, merchants, artists, seduced by its beauty and its strategic location OASIS between Italy and Albania. For such is the magic of Corfu: this Mediterranean island is rich in multiple cultural influences and above all breathtaking landscapes! The capital of the island has the same name as this one. Corfu city, with its watercolours, has an air of Italy... From beige to purple, the string of ochre-coloured facades, iron balconies and churches with red roofs bear witness to four centuries of Venetian domination on the island (1386-1797). Another notable influence is that of the British domination, the most successful example of which is the Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George. You will also often see the Corfiotes playing their favourite sport, Cricket, a British heritage par excellence. THE KANONI PENINSULA owes its name to a battery of cannons abandoned by Napoleon’s troops. It was here that the first city of Corcyre was established: the inhabitants stretched out on the western slope, the sanctuaries on the eastern façade.

  • ITHACA Vathi
ITHACA Ithaca Island is famous through mythology for it is the mythical land of the famous Odysseus (Ulysses). It is part of the seven islands forming the group called Ionian Islands. It is a beautiful, verdant island full of traditional and picturesque villages and amazing beaches with crystalline waters. The authenticity, wildness and unspoiled beauty of the area are charming every one who visits it. In Vathi, you can view quaint red-roofed houses Neorio that set among beautiful scenery at the end of the deep closed Molos bay. The Cave of Nymphs is located just slightly northwest of Vathi. This is where, according to myth, Odysseus hid gifts that were bestowed upon him by the Phaeacians, who sent him to Ithaca ten years after the Trojan War had ended. The Monastery of the Archangels is also very well worth a visit, located at Perahori. The bay of Polis holds a cave in which inscriptions were carved that testified to the worship of Artemis, Hera, and Athena. There were also twelve tripods found here that were very similar to the ones that the Phaeacians supposedly had given to Odysseus. In Pelikata, excavations on the hillside have revealed a small Bronze Age settlement. The finding of this settlement have helped to reinforce the notion that ancient Ithaca lies somewhere close to this point. For a look at villages who have been virtually unspoiled from modernism, Kioni and Frikes are wonderful stopping places. Ithaki is Vathi also filled with many wonderful beaches for Nikos O. An island is a piece of land surrounded by water. This atlas is focussed on small and very small islands that fall below the system of territorial units for statistics (NUTS) within the European Union not having a fixed link to the European mainland. ESIN represents 1,640 such islands with a resident population of 359,357people. These small islands have 3-4 million summer residents and ten times as many visitors, which creates a heavy human pressure on the islands’ social, technical and ecological systems.

  • Preliminary Study on the Slump Structures of the Early Oligocene Sediments of the Pre-Apulian Zone (Antipaxos Island, North-Western Greece)
Δελτίο της Ελληνικής Γεωλογικής Εταιρίας, 2010 Bulletin of the Geological Society of Greece, 2010 Πρακτικά 12ου Διεθνούς Συνεδρίου Proceedings of the 12th International Congress Πάτρα, Μάιος 2010 Patras, May, 2010 PRELIMINARY STUDY ON THE SLUMP STRUCTURES OF THE EARLY OLIGOCENE SEDIMENTS OF THE PRE-APULIAN ZONE (ANTIPAXOS ISLAND, NORTH-WESTERN GREECE) V. Karakitsios1, M. Triantaphyllou1 and P. Panoussi1 1 National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment, Department of Historical Geology and Paleontology, [email protected] Abstract A spectacular slump is observed in the Alpine sediments of the Antipaxos Island (Pre-Apulian zone, West- ern Greece). It can be followed in a zone of about 2000 m, in the eastern coast of the island. The slumped unit exposure length extends for more than 200 m, and is directly overlain and underlain by undeformed strata. The slump has an average thickness of 15 m and is composed, as the surrounding undeformed units, of calcareous mudstones and fine-grained calcareous sandstones. Synsedimentary folds that very often are transformed to contorted beds affect slump sediments. Fold and contorted bed axes present a NNW-SSE di- rection, coinciding with the general direction of the Pre-Apulian zone. Slump and overlain/underlain un- deformed sediments originate from the flux of clastic mainly pelagic/neritic biogenic particles, emanating from turbidity currents. More than 50 samples have been collected and analyzed for calcareous nannofos- sil content. All samples were featured by the contemporaneous presence of abundant nannofossil flora im- plying the biostratigraphic correlation with the NP23 nannofossil biozone. The biostratigraphic assignment places the slump and the surrounding sediments to the Early Oligocene.
