Causes of Deforestation and Climatic Changes in Dir Kohistan
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by International Institute for Science, Technology and Education (IISTE): E-Journals Journal of Pharmacy and Alternative Medicine www.iiste.org ISSN 2222-5668 (Paper) ISSN 2222-4807 (Online) Vol. 3, No. 2, 2014 Research Article Causes of deforestation and climatic changes in Dir Kohistan Muhammad Tariq1*, Muhammad Rashid2, Wajid Rashid3 1Department of Environmental Sciences, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University, Sheringal Dir Upper, Pakistan 2School of Pharmacy, The University of Faisalabad, Faisalabad, Pakistan 3Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Swat, Pakistan *E-mail of the corresponding author: [email protected] Accepted Date: 22 May 2014 akistan is on 2nd position among those countries, where deforestation rate is very high. The current work is design to highlight the facts, real causes and impacts of deforestation and forest degradation in P “Dir Kohistan” of K.P.K Pakistan, by incorporating the view of local people through a questionnaire. According to this survey about 83% of the local people are dependent on these forests and contribute to deforestation in one of different ways regardless of any rule regulation. The current study shows that the extensive deforestation in the mention area occurs for household needs (cooking, furniture, heating, earning etc). Another growing cause is the cutting of these forests for livestock purposes. Along this the nonscientific grazing is a key point in the deforestation. Unemployment and poverty is another attractive factor in the degradation of these forests. However the role of black marketing and role of stake holders on these forests should not be neglected in deforestation. -

A total of 671 specimens representing 7 genera and 10 species were collected. Species collected were Barilius pakistanicus, Barilius vagra, Tor putitora, Crossocheilus diplocheilus, Garra gotyla, Schizothorax labiatus, Schizothorax esocinus, Schizothorax plagiostmus, Carassius auratus and Cyprinus carpio. Schizothorax plagiostmus was found to be the most abundant species with a relative density (RD) of 21.01 and relative frequency (RF) of 13.04. It was the only species qualifying the criterion to be ranked as eury species. Schizothorax esocinus was rare in the study area with a RD 0.45 and RF 2.17. Keywords: Cyprinidae; Schizothorax; River Panjkora; Eury species; Relative density; Relative frequency Introduction and as lower risk level [5]. From River Pisces make one of the important groups of Charju Arunachal Pradesh, India 16 species vertebrates inhabiting almost all water of family Cyprinidae were reported [6]. -

Probing Green Pesticides in Dir Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan
International Journal of Cell Science and Biotechnology E-ISSN 2320 –7574 ©2015INPRESSCO®, All Rights Reserved Available at http://inpressco.com/category/ijcsb/ Research Article Probing Green Pesticides in Dir Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan Anwarul Haq†*, Hamid Afridi†, Faiz-Ur-Rahmanξ and Aslam Khanψ †Department of Pharmacy, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University Sheringal Upper Dir, Pakistan ξDepartment of Zoology Hazara University Mansehra, Pakistan ψInstitute of Basic Medical Sciences, Khyber Medical University Peshawar, Pakistan Accepted 15 March 2015, Available online 01 April 2015, Vol.4 (2015) Abstract The present study focuses survey of essential oils containing plants termed as `Green pesticides` in Dir Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which is a high altitude region, rich in medicinally important species. 25 plant species of 10 genera belonging to 07 families are explored in 25 various locations during 10 field surveys. The species rich in essential oils possess pesticidal, insecticidal, antifeedant, repellent, ovipositor deterrent, growth regulatory and antivector activities. Among the explored species, 12 are abundantly available for large scale production of pesticides, 10 are rare while 03 species are vulnerable. Family Lamiaceae is found to consist of 07 important species. Recent investigations of 72 plant species worldwide signify some constituents interfere with the octopaminergic nervous system in insects, unlike mammals, make these chemical substances relatively non-toxic to mammals and fish in toxicological tests, and meet the criteria for “reduced risk” pesticides. Significance of this exploratory research work in countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Bangladesh, which are rich in endemic plant biodiversity lies in future integrated pest management (IPM) programs due to their safety to non-target organisms and the environment. -
