There were close games, standout performances and stars rising to the occasion. “It’s a good start for us, but it’s only the first game,” says Tennessee rookie quarterback MARCUS MARIOTA, who threw four touchdown passes in the Titans’ 42-14 win over Tampa Bay. “It means we’re 1-0. For me, it’s taking it one day at a time and just executing to the best of my abilities. We have to continue to get better. We have an opportunity to continue to put our best foot forward and for me, that’s exciting.” Making his NFL debut, Mariota dazzled as he completed 13 of 16 passes (81.3 percent) for 209 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions for a 158.3 passer rating, the highest attainable mark. He is the first rookie in NFL history to post a 158.3 passer rating on Kickoff Weekend. All four of Mariota’s touchdown passes came in the first half and he is the only rookie in NFL history to throw four touchdown passes in one half. Tennessee’s 28-point victory is the largest in a season opener by a team starting a rookie quarterback since 1948, when the Chicago Bears and JOHNNY LUJACK won by 38 points. From youth football clinics to character-building initiatives, military appreciation and school celebrations, thousands of local children and their families will experience the excitement of Draft through a series of free events. The following are some of the ways that the NFL, Dallas Cowboys and partners will celebrate Draft week and leave a positive legacy in Dallas. NFL Draft Fuel Up to Play 60 Touchdown Celebration Nearly 500 students from Dallas-Fort Worth area elementary schools will come to AT&T Stadium on Tuesday, April 24 from 10 AM – 12 PM for a youth health and wellness celebration hosted by the Dallas Cowboys, Dairy MAX, NFL and Fuel Up to Play 60. GARY KUBIAK HEAD COACH – 22nd NFL Season (12th with Broncos) Gary Kubiak, a 23-year coaching veteran and three-time Super Bowl champion, enters his third decade with the Denver Broncos after being named the 15th head coach in club history on Jan. 19, 2015. A backup quarterback for nine seasons (1983-91) with the Broncos and an offensive coordinator for 11 years (1995- 2005) with the club, Kubiak returns to Denver after spending eight years (2006-13) as head coach of the Houston Texans and one season (2014) as offensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens. During 21 seasons working in the NFL, Kubiak has coached 30 players to a total of 57 Pro Bowl selections. He has appeared in eight conference championship games and six Super Bowls as a player or coach and was part of three World Championship staffs (S.F., 1994; Den., 1997-98) as a quarterbacks coach or offensive coordinator. In his most recent position as Baltimore’s offensive coordinator in 2014, he oversaw one of the NFL’s most improved and explosive units to help the Ravens advance to the AFC Divisional Playoffs. His offense posted the third-largest overall improvement (+57.5 ypg) in the NFL from the previous season and posted nearly 50 percent more big plays (74 plays of 20+yards) from the year before he arrived. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco recorded career highs in passing yards (3,986) and touchdown passes (27) under Kubiak’s guidance while running back Justin Forsett ranked fifth in the league in rushing (1,266 yds.) to earn his first career Pro Bowl selection.

He can look straight ahead and see where Flozell Adams sat for years. Now Gurode is the old man in the room. Not in terms of age or years of NFL service – those go to backup quarterback Jon Kitna (37 and 14 respectively) – but in tenure with the Cowboys. Gurode is entering his eighth season with the Cowboys. “I wouldn’t say it felt like yesterday,” said Gurode, a second round pick in 2002 after Roy Williams and before Antonio Bryant, “but it felt like I just came here a few years ago. I couldn’t imagine going through the stuff I’ve been through and the years and just all of the things it took to get to this point. It’s like, ‘Wow, it’s really been a journey.’” Gurode was Adams’ teammate for eight years, who was once Michael Irvin’s teammate, who played with Everson Walls, who was a Cowboy with Harvey Martin, who played defensive line with Bob Lilly, the Cowboys’ first draft pick in 1961, who came a year after Eddie LeBaron was the quarterback for an 0-11-1 team in the franchise’s first year.

GEORGE GODSEY CO-OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR/TIGHT ENDS COLLEGE: GEORGIA TECH NFL: 11TH SEASON DOLPHINS: THIRD SEASON George Godsey enters his 11th season as an NFL coach and third with the Dolphins after being named tight ends coach on Feb. 8, 2019. He was promoted to co-offensive coordinator/tight ends in 2021. Godsey has experience coaching on both sides of the football. In his 10 years (2011-20) as an NFL assistant coach, Godsey has been part of eight winning seasons, five division titles and one AFC Championship. His teams have compiled a .588 winning percentage. In 2020, Godsey oversaw the most productive tight end unit in Dolphins history. Mike Gesicki, Durham Smythe and Adam Shaheen combined for 91 receptions for 1,061 yards, both of which were team records for a tight end unit. The trio also tied the team’s tight end mark with 11 receiving touchdowns. Gesicki led the way with 53 receptions for 703 yards (13.3 avg.) and six touchdowns. His 703 yards were second-most by a tight end in Dolphins history and ranked fourth in the NFL that season. In his first year with the Dolphins in 2019, Godsey helped the second-year Gesicki improve from his rookie campaign. Gesicki caught five touchdowns in the final six games of the season, tied for the second-most by any NFL player in that span. His 51 receptions and 570 receiving yards were both fifth among AFC tight ends that season. Godsey spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons with the Detroit Lions. He was a defensive assistant responsible for special projects in 2017 and was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2018.
