GEORGE GODSEY CO-OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR/TIGHT ENDS COLLEGE: GEORGIA TECH NFL: 11TH SEASON DOLPHINS: THIRD SEASON George Godsey enters his 11th season as an NFL coach and third with the Dolphins after being named tight ends coach on Feb. 8, 2019. He was promoted to co-offensive coordinator/tight ends in 2021. Godsey has experience coaching on both sides of the football. In his 10 years (2011-20) as an NFL assistant coach, Godsey has been part of eight winning seasons, five division titles and one AFC Championship. His teams have compiled a .588 winning percentage. In 2020, Godsey oversaw the most productive tight end unit in Dolphins history. Mike Gesicki, Durham Smythe and Adam Shaheen combined for 91 receptions for 1,061 yards, both of which were team records for a tight end unit. The trio also tied the team’s tight end mark with 11 receiving touchdowns. Gesicki led the way with 53 receptions for 703 yards (13.3 avg.) and six touchdowns. His 703 yards were second-most by a tight end in Dolphins history and ranked fourth in the NFL that season. In his first year with the Dolphins in 2019, Godsey helped the second-year Gesicki improve from his rookie campaign. Gesicki caught five touchdowns in the final six games of the season, tied for the second-most by any NFL player in that span. His 51 receptions and 570 receiving yards were both fifth among AFC tight ends that season. Godsey spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons with the Detroit Lions. He was a defensive assistant responsible for special projects in 2017 and was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2018. As quarterbacks coach, Godsey worked with Matthew Stafford. The signal-caller completed 66.1 percent of his passes (367-of-555) for 3,777 yards and 21 touchdowns despite two of his top receivers – Marvin Jones Jr. and Golden Tate – combining to play in just 16 games for the Lions. In 2017, Godsey worked with the defensive side of the ball for the first time in his career. He helped the Lions finish third in the NFL in total takeaways (32), fourth in interceptions (19) and second in opponent fumble recoveries (13). Godsey spent three seasons (2014-16) in Houston, serving as quarterbacks coach in 2014 before he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2015. The Texans posted three consecutive winning seasons during his tenure there, and won the AFC South in both seasons he was offensive coordinator. In 2016, Godsey oversaw a Houston offense that helped the Texans win the AFC South and an AFC Wild Card game against Oakland in Brock Osweiler’s first full season as an NFL starting quarterback. In 2015, the Texans became the first NFL team since 1950 to make the playoffs with four different starting quarterbacks winning at least one regular-season game. Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins finished third in the NFL in receiving with 1,521 yards. His 11 receiving touchdowns were tied for seventh. Godsey’s first NFL coaching position came in New England, where he served as an offensive assistant (2011) and tight ends coach (2012-13). As tight ends coach in 2012-13, Godsey tutored Rob Gronkowski. Despite playing just seven games in 2013 due to injury, Gronkowski still caught 39 passes for 592 yards (15.2 avg.) and four touchdowns. His 15.2 yards per catch average was third among NFL tight ends that season. In 2012, Godsey helped Gronkowski earn his second Pro Bowl berth. In Godsey’s first NFL season in 2011, he served as an offensive assistant for the Patriots and helped New England win the AFC and advance to Super Bowl XLVI. Godsey came to New England following seven seasons (2004-10) at Central Florida where he held a variety of roles. Godsey began his coaching career as a graduate assistant (2004) for the Knights before he was promoted to quarterbacks coach (2005-08) and then moved to running backs coach in 2009. Central Florida played in three bowl games and won two conference titles in Godsey’s tenure. As the team’s running backs coach in 2010, Godsey helped Central Florida lead Conference USA with 36 rushing touchdowns. The Knights went 11-3 and won Conference USA in his final season at the school. Godsey was a standout quarterback at Georgia Tech from 1998-2001. He left school as the program’s all- time career record-holder in completion percentage (63.3) and passer rating (143.6). He went on to play one season in the Arena Football League for the Tampa Bay Storm, where they won ArenaBowl XVII. A Tampa, Florida native, Godsey comes from a strong football family. His older brother, Greg, played at Air Force and his younger brother, Gary, played at Notre Dame.
