This paper aimed to quantitatively measure the foraging ability of the whole tree root system of spruce (Picea asperata), the dominant tree species in the subalpine coniferous forests of western Sichuan, China, and to reveal the heterogeneity of foraging ability of fine root fractions. The whole root systems of three 9-year-old, three 12-year- old, and three 29-year-old spruce in two growth stages were excavated cautiously by hand. Based on the root biomass and root morphology index, foraging ability of whole root systems of the target plant was quantitatively expressed by the total amount of foraging organ; root foraging efficiency of internal components of fine root was evaluated by means of its physiological indices, including total N, total C, and non-structure carbohydrate (NSC); the heterogeneity of foraging ability of fine root fractions was also clarified. The results showed a whole lateral root biomass of 154.5 g for the 9-year-old spruce, 2 195.27 g for the 12-year-old spruce, and 7 380.60 g for the 29-year-old spruce, with fine root biomass of 27.74 g, 188.79 g, and 1 022.89 g, respectively. There was an upward trend in the total length and in the total surface area of the whole lateral root systems or fine roots of spruce. The specific root length and total nitrogen content were positively correlated with root foraging ability. With the increase of root orders, specific root length, and total N content of the first five root order of spruce took on an upward trend. It suggested that the root foraging ability declined with the increase of root order, and there was significant heterogeneity Supported by the Strategic Priority Research Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (XDA05050303), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (31470630), and the Talent-Recruiting Program of Shanxi Agricultural University (2013YJ17) **通讯作者 Corresponding author (E-mail: [email protected]) 548 中 幼 龄 粗 枝 云 杉(Picea asperata)根系的觅食能力 3期 among the internal components of fine root. The specific root length and total N content of the first order were far more than the other root orders, and the first order root foraging ability was the best among roots of all the first five orders. The nonstructural carbohydrates concentration and its fractions of the first five root orders were small, exhibiting no specific tendency, which suggested that the NSC stored in the first five root order was not enough for its foraging behavior. The physiological differences among growth stages showed that the age of tree had a significant impact on root physiological characteristics, and implied that with the increase of age of tree, the foraging efficiency of the first order root of spruce might decline. These conclusions enrich our understanding of the structure and function of root systems of woody plant at the perspective of the root foraging ability. Chung & T.C. Hsu (Asteraceae, Senecioneae), a new species from Taiwan, is described and illustrated. The new species has long been misidentified as P. hwangshanicus (Y. Ling) C. I Peng & S. W. Chung but is indeed distinct in having wingless petioles and capitula with 4–7 florets. It is also similar to P. petasitoides (H. Lév.) Y. L. Chen but distinguishable in having much smaller habit, paniculate synflorescence and shorter puberulent phyllaries. P. sylviaensis is endemic to Taiwan where it is restricted to the high-altitude Abies forests around the Xueshan region. KEY WORDS: Asteraceae (Compositae), New species, Parasenecio sylviaensis, Taiwan, Taxonomy INTRODUCTION Hence, the Taiwanese populations actually represent an unknown species distinct from P. hwangshanicus. As the Parasenecio W. W. Sm. & J. Small (1922), morphology of this unknown species could not match belonging to the tribe Senecioneae, is an Asteraceae any other known Parasenecio taxa, it is herein described genus comprising about 70 species which are mostly as a new species P. sylviaensis. Furthermore, since no distributed in eastern Asia, particularly the Sino- specimens collected from Taiwan could fully match P. Himalayan region; a few reach eastern Europe and hwangshanicus, this species should be excluded from the northern America (Ren et al., 2017; Grant, 1993; Flora of Taiwan.

A valley adjacent to the extremely species-rich temperate forest vegetation of the Taibai Nature Reserve was chosen. Eighty-two people from 5 villages took part in the study. Altogether, 159 wild food plant species and 13 fungi folk taxa were mentioned by informants. The mean number of freelisted wild foods was very high (24.8; median – 21.5). An average respondent listed many species of wild vegetables (mean – 17, me- dian – 14.5), a few wild fruits (mean – 5.9 and median – 6) and very few fungi (mean – 1.9, median – 1), which they had eaten. Over 50% of respondents mentioned gathering the young shoots or leaves of Celastrus orbiculatus, Staphylea bumalda and S.

  • Rare Plant Register
1 BSBI RARE PLANT REGISTER Berkshire & South Oxfordshire V.C. 22 MICHAEL J. CRAWLEY FRS UPDATED APRIL 2005 2 Symbols and conventions The Latin binomial (from Stace, 1997) appears on the left of the first line in bold, followed by the authority in Roman font and the English Name in italics. Names on subsequent lines in Roman font are synonyms (including names that appear in Druce’s (1897) or Bowen’s (1964) Flora of Berkshire that are different from the name of the same species in Stace). At the right hand side of the first line is a set of symbols showing - status (if non-native) - growth form - flowering time - trend in abundance (if any) The status is one of three categories: if the plant arrived in Britain after the last ice age without the direct help of humans it is defined as a native, and there is no symbol in this position. If the archaeological or documentary evidence indicates that a plant was brought to Berkshire intentionally of unintentionally by people, then that species is an alien. The alien species are in two categories ● neophytes ○ archaeophytes Neophytes are aliens that were introduced by people in recent times (post-1500 by convention) and for which we typically have precise dates for their first British and first Berkshire records. Neophytes may be naturalized (forming self-replacing populations) or casual (relying on repeated introduction). Archaeophytes are naturalized aliens that were carried about by people in pre-historic times, either intentionally for their utility, or unintentionally as contaminants of crop seeds. Archaeophytes were typically classified as natives in older floras.

The aim of the study was to investigate knowledge and use of wild food plants in a valley inhabited by Tibetans in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Region. Methods: The field research was carried out in a wooded mountain valley in 9 neighbouring villages the Zhouqu (Brugchu) county, and comprised 17 interviews with single informants and 14 group interviews, involving 122 people altogether. Results: We recorded the use of 81 species of vascular plants from 41 families. Fruits formed the largest category, with 42 species, larger than the wild greens category, with 36 species. We also recorded the culinary use of 5 species of edible flowers, 7 species with underground edible organs and 5 taxa of fungi. On average, 16.2 edible taxa were listed per interview (median – 16). Green vegetables formed the largest category of wild foods (mean – 8.7 species, median – 9 species), but fruits were listed nearly as frequently (mean – 6.9, median – 6).

  • Literature Cited Robert W. Kiger, Editor This Is a Consolidated List Of
RWKiger 5 Jul 18 Literature Cited Robert W. Kiger, Editor This is a consolidated list of all works cited in volumes 19, 20, and 21, whether as selected references, in text, or in nomenclatural contexts. In citations of articles, both here and in the taxonomic treatments, and also in nomenclatural citations, the titles of serials are rendered in the forms recommended in G. D. R. Bridson and E. R. Smith (1991). When those forms are abbreviated, as most are, cross references to the corresponding full serial titles are interpolated here alphabetically by abbreviated form. In nomenclatural citations (only), book titles are rendered in the abbreviated forms recommended in F. A. Stafleu and R. S. Cowan (1976–1988) and F. A. Stafleu and E. A. Mennega (1992+). Here, those abbreviated forms are indicated parenthetically following the full citations of the corresponding works, and cross references to the full citations are interpolated in the list alphabetically by abbreviated form. Two or more works published in the same year by the same author or group of coauthors will be distinguished uniquely and consistently throughout all volumes of Flora of North America by lower-case letters (b, c, d, ...) suffixed to the date for the second and subsequent works in the set. The suffixes are assigned in order of editorial encounter and do not reflect chronological sequence of publication. The first work by any particular author or group from any given year carries the implicit date suffix "a"; thus, the sequence of explicit suffixes begins with "b". Works missing from any suffixed sequence here are ones cited elsewhere in the Flora that are not pertinent in these volumes.
