Vintage Microcar Club www.microcar.org 3 : The other day I took my grandson, Joey, for a ride in Letters: Q my and we visited our local Christian book store. I saw a “Honk if you love Jesus” bumper sticker, bought it, and : I have a big problem, I got together with my wife had an Joey fixed it on my bumper. Boy, am I glad I did, what an uplifting Q accident this weekend with the Messerschmitt KR 200, experience that followed. we are 3 times about the head and struck, the is damaged. I would like to ask you or anyone knows that to you the following I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in items for sale: compleet aluminum window frame with thought about the Lord and how good He is, and I didn’t notice windshield, right mirror, rear hood, 2 pice direction indicaters. He Alex & Conny must have seen my bumper sticker as he started honking like [email protected] crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, The Netherlands ‘For the love of God!’, ‘Go! Go! Go! Jesus Christ, GO!’

(What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus!)

Soon everyone started honking and I found that lots of people love Jesus !

So I just looked out my window and started waving and smiling at all those loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love! There must have been a man from the South back there because I heard him yelling something about a ‘sunny beach’.

I saw another fellow waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air. I asked Joey what that meant. He said it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Well, I have never met anyone from Hawaii, so I stuck my arm out my window and gave him the good luck sign right back.

A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their and started walking towards us. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed. So, smiling, I waved at all my brothers and sisters, and drove on through the intersection.

I noticed that I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again and felt kind of sad that I had to I’m from Guatemala and my husband owns an Isetta : leave them after all the love we had shared. So I slowed my Isetta 300 but he is missing the piece of luggage that goes on Q down, flipped open the sunroof, reached out and gave them all the back rack outside. Can you tell me where can I buy one or the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away. the measures that needs the luggage to fit. I will like to give it to him as a surprise. Love, Grandma Thank you for you’re hell and time,

editor’s note: I prefer to use the “HAMMER PRICE” when reporting Live Auction results as the “Buyer’s Premium” can vary and the “Hammer Price” is the standard at which all other fees (like Seller’s Premium) is calculated. Also- if you were AT the event, the “Hammer Price” is the one you would be aware of. For those that argue that the “value” of the car is the TOTAL amount the BUYER agreed to pay, then why not add in Taxes and Shipping Costs as well as Hotel and Travel expenses as well? Do you have a different perspective? Let me know.

10 Microcar News #3 2014 WORST OF SHOW!

An ugly oil stain on the Pebble Beach Auto Week, the Concours d’LeMons returned once again to Laguna Grande Park in Seaside, CA on Aug 16, 2014. Hoopties, Rust Buckets, Misfits, Mistakes and the worst of the automotive world were on display and as always celebrity judges were accepting bribes for the Thrift Shop sourced trophies. The best part is that the show was free for participants and spectators, so you got exactly what you paid for.

Out of 125 cars entered, Steven Mandell’s -Comtesse won the highest award: “Worst of Show” that was saved for the finale as the final presentation.

Originally entered to compete in the “Unmitigated Gaul” category that all French cars were lumped into, the spunky little 47cc fiberglas “Sans Permis” vehicle went on to steal the show with it’s awesomeness or lack there-of.

The French “Sans Permis” (unlicensed) class was originally designed to be marketed to people that were not allowed to drive “real” cars, i.e: teenagers with no licenses and adults who had lost their license due to DUI. Basically if you saw one of these coming down the street, it was best to steer clear as the driver really had no business being on a public roadway.

Vintage Microcar Club www.microcar.org 11 NEWTON FALLS OH 2014

Our Newton Falls Show on June 21 went well last weekend with 13 Micros showing up. I was very pleased at the turnout considering that Ralph Hough’s MicroNorth meet and ours were on the same day. Hopefully next year we can get 30 or more.

Prior to last year, our Messerschmitt was the only Microcar in attendance. We had 3 cars last year and since the Show committee is determined to attract more Micros with an added class for them, we had 13 this year! 2 Messerschmitts, 1 Isetta, 1 1965 Mini Cooper, 1 Crosley, and 8 King Midgets. The Crosley is owned by Norm and Janyne Smith from Poland, Ohio. They together restored this car from bottom up by themselves. It was the most beautiful car restoration I have ever seen. They won the award for Mayor’s Choice with a Huge Trophy.

The white 57 Messerschmitt KR200 with the Purple top is owned by Ron Gaydis from Mineral Point, Pa. It won First Place in The Micro Division. (editor’s note: that car was originally from Australia).

The Isetta is owned by Mike McCloskey from Finleyville PA. It also was a fantastic restoration and was just beautiful. That car won Best of the Rest award with another huge Trophy.

Our 55 Messerschmitt KR200 won Second place in the Micro Division. The King Midgets were out in full force with 8 in attendance. They covered the spectrum from a just beginning restore to the very fine restoration.

12 Microcar News #3 2014 Mayor’s Choice: CROSLEY SUPER

Our day started with threats of rain but cleared up and turned into the perfect day for a show. There were thousands of spectators and 300 plus vehicles and guess who attracted the most attention? The Micros of course! All Micro participants had a great time and said they will continue to come yearly.

Since the show my brother and I have decided to create • Isetta Door Latch another event in Minster, Ohio for the big annual Oktoberfest. (Sliding Window models only) $138.00 This is a huge weekend on Oct 3, 4 & 5 and draws 80,000 plus people to the Village. We have a great location 1 block away at • Isetta Front Bumper my brothers house with plenty of room for Micros and plan to $99.00 attend the 3 hour car show on Sat Morning with a ride planned • Isetta Rear Bumper Pipes to Maria Stein to visit a Beautiful old Convent for possibly a picnic and then tour around Minster’s German Heritage. We $69.00 a set promise it to be a very fun weekend of Cars, Food, Fun and probably a couple adult beverages. The door latch kit comes with everything you need to update the hardware. Latches and handles are triple chrome plated, and also comes with a LED lighted key. Ron Stoner These bumper parts are triple chrome plated. They are new in the box, and just what you

Vintage Microcar Club www.microcar.org 13 A TALE OF TWO TAGS Two short Microcar Mysteries about missing bits that could never ever actually happen to people because why would someone sell a car with missing paperwork and why would someone buy a car with missing paperwork? Total Fiction (except for the parts that are true)...

The Case of the Missing TIGER Tag

After pursuing a lead on a Tg500 for several years, Mark J. was in the right place at the right time. The car was owned by a very wealthy individual who had recently sold his company and retired. Despite being retired, he still had too many vehicles and projects and was concerned that the Tiger would somehow be damaged or simply lost to the ages somehow. Alan R. was instructed to “find it a good home”.

Alan was an aircraft mechanic by trade who took care of many of the mechanical items in this man’s collection. After the Tiger was purchased at Auction in Germany maybe 20 years ago, Alan did a complete rebuild of the engine because the car never ran after it was brought back to California. Now the ID tag was missing. Mark was not happy. He could have a new tag made. But it would be a reproduction. Mark was a avid historical aviation enthusiast as well, and met Alan at Everything else on the car was as original. Another worry was that an air show that featured old warbirds. Over drinks one evening, Alan the ID tag was on another car! mentioned the Tg500 and asked Mark if he knew anyone who might be interested. Mark immediately said “ME! It might be worth contacting converted dome top. They settled on a price and Mark immediately him and see what he knows about this.” sent a check for 1/3 the amount as a deposit. The only hangup was the Georgia. paperwork. “Well, what’s the problem with the paperwork?” asked Mark. It appeared on eBay one day. A crate for sale in California. Inside was a 4-wheel 154 in pieces partially restored, but all the bits were purported to be there. Scott saw this and was intrigued. He had wanted a Heinkel, but had not found anything that he thought was either complete or properly done. Here was a chance to get the rarest form of Heinkel (4-wheeler) and have control over the final product. Plus it came with it’s own box. How many cars come with their own box?

Some cursory inquiries and investigation revealed that the seller had actually purchased this project on eBay several years prior in 2008 and had it crated and shipped to him in California, but then never touched it. A record of the original auction listing was found and the photos in the current auction were the same ones used in the original listing. A bit more investigating revealed that the seller was Payment is made and the crate is sent to Scott forthwith with the a microcar collector who was quite particular about originality and seller stating he will send along some paperwork and the original ID was known for being quite thorough before purchasing something. tag separately. Fortunately the answer arrives in an email a few weeks later: “Please find attached some images of your correct 154 chassis plate. It Adding to the confusion was records of the original listing from 2008 was actually well filed away with some documents for my cars but as showed the seller answering questions at the bottom of the page. I have my items still in boxes as I am stuck between moving. I have not One answer from the seller states: “I have the original chassis plate cleaned it up so a nice and honest rare item with correct numbers.” and it matches the engine number - 5XX-XXX” The tag showed the 3XX-XXX number listed in the original 2008 While this is completely counter to the info at the TOP of the listing eBay listing. that shows the 3XX-XXX number, it does shed some light on the fact that the ID plate appeared to be SEPARATE from the vehicle at the WHEEWWWW! Vintage Microcar Club www.microcar.org 21 Drive Them, Don’t Hide Them!

Of course we are always motivated by a reason to drive our microcars. Therefore, we are inviting our fellow microcar & minicar owners and enthusiasts to come join us this fall for a Chicago outing. FIAT of Chicago is sponsoring a Microcar & Minicar gathering on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at their 645 W. Randolph Street Studio (at the intersection of Des Plaines Street) from 10:00am to 4:00p. It will be a Fall Festival of small, unique, weird & fun cars. There is no charge to enter or to bring your car. That is correct, No Charge!

They have arranged for private off-street parking area. Our hosts, FIAT of Chicago, will be providing morning snacks & coffee and a simple lunch for all of us who bring our microcars & minicars. The show will begin at 10:00am. Therefore, you should arrive beginning at 9:00am so we can organize the cars according to type.

No surprise, we would like to park same brands cars together. By example, look great when parked together. Same for Citroen 2CVs, Fiat 500+600s, Messerschmitts, , etc. The Show will end after the Awards Ceremony at 4:00 pm, so everyone can continue with their Saturday evening plans.

We hope to have at least 40 cars participate. If we have more microcar owners commit, we have an option for an adjacent showfield. The location is precisely ½ block east of the JFK Expressway, so it is easy to access. There are no issues with downtown Chicago congestion. There is adequate trailer parking near the showfield.

Kindly confirm at your earliest, so we can send you a registration form. This will enable us to organize the logistics for the show. If you think of others who should be invited, please send us their contact information and we will send out their invitation.
