Precis som med alla genrer som har så tydliga attribut och förtecken – hårdrock, punk, new romantic – är det lätt att göra narr av och underskatta discons inverkan på musikhistorien och populärkulturen i stort. Faktum är att alla vet hur discomusik låter och vad som kännetecknar den korta period den regerade på listorna. Och med tiden har dess simpla budskap om att dansa och ha roligt gång på gång omfamnats av det hårda, moderna samhället, lika mycket som dess musikaliska attribut gång på gång återanvänts i alla typer av dansmusik. Om man skrattar åt disco idag gör man det mer på grund av de hårresande utstyrslarna och de fåniga, om än stilbildande dansrörelserna än de de facto grymt svängiga låtarna och extremt detaljerade – och minst lika stilbildande produktionerna. This interview with NILE RODGERS was conducted by the Library of Congress on May 9, 2018 Library of Congress: Is it true that the song “Le Freak” was born out of an evening of frustration outside of Studio 54? Nile Rodgers: Yes, 100%. I can give you the story. It was early on in our career and we had never produced [for] a star. All of our records had been successful—“Dance, Dance, Dance,” Norma Jean [Wright’s] “I Can’t Wait for Saturday.” They had all gone gold and platinum and made stars. But we had never produced for a star. Then Grace Jones phoned us. She said that the only way to understand her completely as an artist was to see her perform live. We were very anxious to produce what would have been her next album, to start a relationship with her. She told us to come to the back door of 54 and say we were “Personal friends of Miss Grace Jones.” And to say exactly that. Now Grace has a very interesting accent. It’s very unusual; it’s not reflective of any one culture. It’s like a mix of Marlene Dietrich and Bob Marley and Bela Lugosi. I thought [her accent] was a put on, at first…. When we went to the back door, we put that voice on. I mean, in some ways it was just too easy—we were just about to get into 54! It was the hottest club on the planet! The center of the disco universe! We are banging on the back door really hard in order to be heard above the level of the music inside.

Denne masteroppgaven beskriver el- basspillet i discoperioden – først og fremst gjennom transkripsjon og analyse. “ADIKA PONGO” ADIKA PONGO, one of the leading bands on the European and Italian Soul scene, have been grooving audiences since 1993, combining original songs with enticing cover versions of major funk/soul/disco hits. The band performs in Italy’s most important clubs. Careful listeners can trace elements in the ADIKA PONGO sound to fundamental music roots from the 70s, but the band really has a style of its own that is guaranteed to get feet moving. “This band is abs olutely amazing!” said Lionel Richie, after having performed with them in 2004. Riding the wave of their "live" success, Adika Pongo’s first CD comes out in June 2011: Groovin’ Up! – Hits 1997-2011 with the renowned British label Expansion Records. The CD will feature songs from their 1997 recordings, as well as new tracks recorded with their current lead vocalist Francy. Among the guest artists, a special mention goes to Norma Jean Wright and Luci Martin (ex vocalists of the remarkable band Chic), Robbie Dupree (nominated for Grammys and twice in the Top Ten on Billboard) and Steve Khan (known for his numerous solo projects and his work with Steely Dan, Weather Report, Brecker Brothers, Dianne Schuur, Donald Fagen et al). Some songs are sung by Baruch "Darling" Chadwick, one of the first solo vocalists to perform with Adika Pongo, who unfortunately died prematurely in 2004. Two songs on the new CD feature a duet with Francy and are a tribute to him. Two songs from this album, “Chill Out” and “The Loo k In You Eye” , have been released on the soul compilation "Luxury Soul 2011" by the Expansion Records.
